Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I will sit at the end of the table, because I am a southpaw, but there's nothing sinister about that. What other word describes me?

Answer: Left-handed

Left-handedness is also known as sinistrality or mancinism, and those of us who favor the use of our left hands are called many names, including southpaws, especially in a sporting context. The Latin word for left was sinister, and the French is gauche.

There seems to be a common theme here. I always try to sit on the end of the table so that using my left hand doesn't make me bump into my neighbor's right hand.
2. My mother is a keen tatter, as you can tell from the table decorations, which include homemade place mats, as well as doilies under the serving dishes. What does she make?

Answer: Lace

Tatting is one form of lace making, which uses a shuttle or a needle to produce patterns of knots and loops that are often used for decorating collars, or for doilies. Tatting could also be used to produce lacy place mats for our luncheon.
3. Which of the following might be provided for us to drink either before, during or after lunch?

Answer: Liquor

We might eat one of the other options, but we could drink liquor - in small amounts, of course. Those of us who prefer non-alcoholic beverages can choose to have lemonade instead.
4. Of course there are floral decorations on the table. Which of these plants is MOST LIKELY to have been used to produce the pink color theme of the day?

Answer: Love Lies Bleeding

Also called Amaranthus, Love Lies Bleeding has a trailing dark pink flower that makes a decorative centerpiece. Lily of the valley has white flowers, and both lavender and lilac generally produce purple blooms (although there are cultivars with a range of colors that can include pink and blue).
5. The sister who prepared our feast really worked hard to make it all delicious. Which of these words might be used to describe her efforts?

Answer: Labor

She certainly did work hard, but it was a labor of love - or so she says! None of us thought it showed a deranged or lunatic tendency, and we would never suggest she put in less that her best effort by calling it lackadaisical. She may have been laconic as she went about her work, or she may have been chatty - we weren't there to see.
6. As we looked at all the food piled onto the table, my brother observed that the table was well and truly described by which of these words?

Answer: Laden

The table was heavily laden, which means it was loaded with goodies. Lustrous means shining, limpid is a word meaning clear, more commonly applied to eyes than to food, and there was nothing little about the banquet we approached!
7. One of the dishes we were served was steamed fennel. What other food-related word is often used to describe the flavor of this vegetable?

Answer: Licorice

Fennel, also called finocchio, has a strong flavor of anise, similar to the flavor of licorice. Fennel is traditionally one of the three herbs used in the preparation of absinthe, an alcoholic drink that was originally developed as a tonic.
8. Lunch included a variant on one of my favorite dishes, potato pancakes. Which of these is the name for a kind of potato pancake traditionally eaten at Hanukkah?

Answer: Latkes

There are many ways of preparing potato pancakes, most using shredded or grated potato, with flour and egg added to hold them together as they are shallow-fried. In my family, we also used mashed potato, dredged in flour and fried in butter rather than oil. Fortunately, my sister knew that some of us like them thin and crispy, and some like them to have plenty of creamy potato inside the crisp outer layers, so everyone enjoyed them.

Lieben is a German verb for love, lieder are romantic songs with German poems set to music, and lollipops are sweet hard candy on a stick that is held as the candy is eaten.
9. Whoops, there was an insect on the flowers that form the centerpiece! Which of these is the name usually given to a beetle whose red wings have black spots on them, the subject of a nursery rhyme?

Answer: Ladybug

The ladybug is also called a ladybird, or ladybird beetle. When we saw the ladybug on the flowers, we all joined in the childhood chant that starts "Ladybug, ladybug, fly away home" while my father collected it up to carry outside back to freedom.
10. After a big meal, the more mature members of the family were all feeling lazy, but the younger members of the group felt that some activity was called for, and started playing tag on the lawn. What word definitely does NOT describe the way the youngsters were feeling?

Answer: Lethargic

Lethargic would be more appropriate as a description of those of us dozing in our chairs, not those running around. Any of the other three words might describe the youngsters, who were out there laughing in the long grass.
