Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In this sport, a player is out for a "duck" if they are dismissed having scored zero runs.

Answer: Cricket

If West Indies player Courtney Walsh were hunting real ducks, he would be Ducks Unlimited hunter of the year. In 185 test matches, he was out for duck 43 times by 2007.

In baseball and lacrosse, you'll find the ducks at the University of Oregon. In jai alai, just DUCK!

2. In golf, what word might a golfer shout to mean "DUCK"?

Answer: Fore

According to Wikipedia, the term "fore" dates back to at least 1881 and means "look ahead". The same source explains, "it is believed to come from the military 'beware before', which an artilleryman about to fire would yell alerting nearby infantrymen to drop to the ground to avoid the shells overhead".

I would certainly pay attention.
3. I went to a duck hunt at Arrowhead Pond and a hockey game broke out. In what California city was I?

Answer: Anaheim

The Walt Disney Company founded "The Mighty Ducks" of Anaheim in 1993. For the purposes of this quiz, I had to get a little bit historic. The team was sold to Henry and Susan Samueli in 2005 and they renamed the team The Anaheim Ducks. Arrowhead Pond is now known as the Honda Center. In 2007, they won the Stanley Cup Championship.

4. "Duck Hunt", a video game released in 1984, received mediocre reviews. It later became a "pack-in" game with "Super Mario Brothers" and "World Class Track Meet". What super-power in the gaming industry developed and published this game?

Answer: Nintendo

The "Duck Hunt" dog, a character which laughed at the player for missing, was cited by "Cracked" magazine as "the most annoying video game character from an otherwise great game".

Atari got us hooked on video games in the '70s with "Pong". My favorite Atari game now is "Dungeons and Dragons". A/E Sports is best known for "Madden NFL", "Tiger Woods PGA Tour" (my favorite), and many other mainstream sports games. Eidos is the home of "Lara Croft". I love the whole "Tomb Raider" franchise.

The hint comes from the English translation of the Japanese term "ninten".
5. Often considered politically incorrect, which comic/cartoon duck was created by Bruce Tinsley?

Answer: Mallard Fillmore

In 1991, Bruce Tinsley was an editorial cartoonist for the Charlottesville, VA, "Daily Progress". A politically conservative pundit, Mallard Fillmore was created to be a mascot for the paper's entertainment page. He has been syndicated in over 400 newspapers. My local newspaper runs this strip along side "Doonesbury" in the editorial section. This is great for starting "colorful" debates in my classroom and with my FT team!

You should already know all you need to about Daffy, Donald, and Howard.

6. In Prokofiev's famous symphony "Peter and the Wolf", which instrument is assigned the character and theme of "Duck"?

Answer: Oboe

In just four days in 1936, Sergei Prokofiev wrote this classic to interest children in classical music. In the story, the wolf (French horn) swallows the Sasha, the duck (oboe), but in the end, we can hear that she is alive in the wolf's belly. The clarinet is the the cat and the bassoon is Peter's grandfather.

7. What does the idiom to have your "ducks in a row" mean?

Answer: You are organized.

Preparing dinner might fit as an answer, but it is not an idiom.

8. Tricky: You and your best friend are in competition for the same boy. You can't wait to call her and tell her that he has asked you to the prom. She says, "Well, that's just ducky." What tone of voice would she probably have used?

Answer: Sarcastic

"That's just ducky" could mean that everything is wonderful. But would your best friend be tickled pink that you won the boy she wanted? She would probably be using sarcasm.

Sarcasm means cutting, bitter, intending to wound; horror is related to fear; sympathy means to share the same feelings (you're happy, she isn't), and apathetic mean not caring (your best friend just lost to you; she cares, all right).

9. The 1933 movie "Duck Soup" starred which of the following?

Answer: Marx Brothers

Not well received in 1933, but today many consider "Duck Soup" a masterpiece and the Marx Brothers' best film. It's hysterical, says I, watch it!

In 1933, the Three Stooges also starred in several shorts and feature films including "Turn Back the Clock" and "Dancing Lady". Laurel and Hardy predate both trios; they first appeared in the film "The Lucky Dog" (1921). In 1933, they teamed up for "Fra Diavolo (or The Devil's Brother)" and "Sons of the Desert". Abbot and Costello came onto the scene (after working in radio) in 1940's "One Night in the Tropics," where the world first heard the incomparable "Who's on First" sketch.
10. How about some real duck? In which classic film do the characters feast on "Chinese turkey" (duck) which is "staring at them"?

Answer: A Christmas Story

What can I say about one of the best films ever? Surely you have seen "A Christmas Story" (1983) a gazillion times, but if you haven't, get it. (Or watch 24 hours of it every Christmas Eve on TNT!)

"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" (1984), "It Happened One Night" (1934), and "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World" (the original, 1963) are all excellent movies I highly recommend, but none of the actors feasted on "Chinese turkey" on camera.
