Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Forest's name is spelled non-traditionally--you normally see it spelled "Forrest". Which Forrest was a fictional character in a movie starring Tom Hanks?

Answer: Forrest Gump

"Forrest Gump" was released in 1994 and won six Oscars, including Best Actor and Best Picture. It was originally a 1986 book written by Winston Groom.
2. Forest really likes Japanese animated television shows. Some of his favorites are "Bleach", "Full Metal Alchemist", and "Death Note". This genre is known as what?

Answer: anime

I learned recently that "Speed Racer", one of my favorites from the 1970s, is also considered anime. I thought it was a cartoon. Manga is similar to anime. It is a comic or graphic novel written and drawn in the Japanese style.
3. At 183 centimeters, Forest is tall for his age. How do we describe this height in the U.S.?

Answer: Six feet tall

There are about 2.54 centimeters in an inch. The metric system is referred to as the International System of Units, or SI for System Internationale.
4. Some of Forest's first pets included a Silkie, a Rhode Island Red, and two Plymouth Rocks. These are breeds of what?

Answer: Chicken

Chickens make charming pets, especially the Silkies. Fresh eggs are a benefit, too, but chickens make a big mess in a small yard.
5. Forest will soon begin his third year of high school. In the U.S., what do we call him?

Answer: Junior

Freshmen are also known as "freshies". Sophomore means "wise fool". Students usually take their SATs while juniors, and seniors tend to take it easy, as it is their last year in high school.
6. When Forest turns 18 years old next year, he will be endowed with rights and responsibilities he hasn't ever had before. Which of the following will he still be unable to do, according to California's laws?

Answer: Buy alcoholic beverages

The state is allowed to lower this age limit, but since the enactment of the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984, it will lose federal funds if it does so. In some states, but not California, a person under 21 may consume alcohol, but not buy it.
7. Forest's sister, Serena, goes to a university in Provo, Utah. It is closely associated with her church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and is known as BYU. What does BYU stand for?

Answer: Brigham Young University

Brigham Young (1801-1877) was the founder of Salt Lake City, Utah Territory's first governor, and the president of the LDS church from 1847 until his death. Only Harvard has a higher percentage of students that are accepted who go on to enroll.
8. Forest has two dogs of two different breeds, both of which are known to be highly intelligent. They were both bred to herd livestock. Which of these breeds, considered to be among the smartest of dogs, does he have?

Answer: Border Collie and Australian Shepherd

Border Collies, like our Chino, are commonly listed as one of the smartest of dog breeds, often trained to manage sheep in the absence of a human giving commands. Australian Shepherds like Daisy (an American breed, despite the name) normally rank in the top five.

Side note: Daisy is WAY smarter than Chino.
9. Forest's favorite food is the canned variety of a pasta pillow filled with meat. It is packaged by Chef Boyardee. What is it called?

Answer: ravioli

Ettore Boiardi (who later changed his name to Hector Boyardee) was born in Italy in 1898 and moved to New York in 1915. He was the founder of the Chef Boyardee food products.
10. Forest's father, grandfather, and great-grandfather all had the same first name, as did a 6th century British king who pulled a sword from a stone, the mystery writer who created Sherlock Holmes, the author of "2001: A Space Odyssey", and a tennis player named Ashe. What is this name?

Answer: Arthur

References are to King Arthur Pendragon (who may or may not be fictional), Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sir Arthur C. Clarke, and Arthur Ashe. Arthur is a Celtic name which means "bear".
