Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A tale of lost treasure and adventure, which book features Jim Hawkins, Blind Pugh and a black spot?

Answer: Treasure Island

Written by Robert Louis Stevenson, this tale was first published in book form in 1883. It is a classic boys' adventure tale of pirates and buried treasure. It has been dramatised for both television and film, and has firmly lodged the stereotype of a one-legged pirate with a parrot on his shoulder in the public imagination, as well as treasure maps and X marks the spot.
2. The Sutton Hoo treasure was discovered in 1939 and is classed as one of the most important archaeological discoveries of all time. When lost or buried treasure of this type is found by a member of the public, what is its correct description?

Answer: Treasure Trove

Sutton Hoo was uncovered by an archaeologist employed by Mrs Pretty, owner of the land, whose nephew's amateur dowsing activities had indicated buried gold. In recent years, certainly since the advent of metal detectors, many buried treasures have been discovered by amateur enthusiasts.

When these are of significance they are declared Treasure Trove, valued by an expert, such as the British Museum, and the finder gets the value of the hoard. This can, and has, run into millions of pounds. The actual objects pass into the possession of the Crown.

Many, such as objects from Sutton Hoo and the Mildenhall Treasure, can be seen in The British Museum.
3. Our next lost item is of a musical nature. Jimmy Durante has a famous song in which he finds it. What is it?

Answer: The Lost Chord

"The Lost Chord" was composed by Arthur Sullivan in 1877 and was performed by Antoinette Sterling and Enrico Caruso among others. It is one of Sullivan's best known songs. In the film "This Time For Keeps" Jimmy Durante sang "I'm the Guy Who Found the Lost Chord".
4. Our next search is for an item that is not so much lost as never found to start with. What is the legendary land that is supposed to have sunk beneath the waves?

Answer: Atlantis

Atlantis is first mentioned by Plato, where he described it as lying in front of the Pillars of Hercules. It is supposed to have sunk beneath the sea in a single night. For years there has been debate as to whether it was real or an allegory, with many people having absolute belief in the legend. Over the years there have been many searches made without success. Atlantis has inspired books and films and has become a sort of template for idyllic advanced civilisations which went wrong and were lost.
5. Who lost her green and yellow basket?

Answer: Ella Fitzgerald

The sublime Ella Fitzgerald sang about her lost basket in "A Tisket A Tasket". Recorded in 1938 with the Chick Webb Band, it was the song that brought her to the attention of the public and was her first big hit. Not only is she the best female jazz singer of her generation, but her renditions of the American classics on "The American Songbook" series are some of the greatest recordings ever made.
6. Which book introduced us to "Shangri-La"?

Answer: Lost Horizon

Written by James Hilton and published in 1933, "Lost Horizon" tells the story of the survivors of a plane crash who find themselves in a Buddhist community in a lost Tibetan valley where the aging process has been virtually eliminated. The story has been loosely re-told in various forms. "The Champions", a British TV series of the 1960s, is based on three secret agents whose plane crashes into a valley in Tibet where they are rescued by Buddhist monks, and when they leave they have gained extra powers, such as telepathy, heightened senses and extra strength.
7. What is the correct term for loss of memory?

Answer: Amnesia

True complete amnesia is very rare. It can occur due to a head injury or the mind blocking out something that is too painful to deal with. Brain damage due to substance abuse can result in total or partial amnesia, as can infection or disease. More common is partial amnesia where something like the events surrounding an accident, or other traumatic experience, are wiped from the memory.
8. What has been lost in a Righteous Brothers song of 1965?

Answer: That Loving Feeling

Recorded in 1965 using the Phil Spectre "Wall of Sound" technique, "You've Lost that Loving Feeling" was a hit in both the USA and Britain. In Britain, a cover version by Cilla Black was expected to be the big hit, but the Righteous Brothers took the number one spot in the UK Top 40 on 20 February 1965, with Cilla Black peaking at number two the previous week.
9. What was John Wayne looking for in "The Searchers"?

Answer: His niece

Made in 1956 and directed by John Ford, "The Searchers" was named the Greatest Western of all time by the American Film Institute. Ethan Edwards, played by John Wayne, is a civil war veteran searching for his niece who has been abducted by Native Americans.

The film follows his five year search. Although praise has been heaped on it in the years following its release, it received no Oscar nominations.
10. Who found his thrill on "Blueberry Hill"?

Answer: Fats Domino

Fats Domino's first rock and roll record was "The Fat Man" released in 1949.
He had various other hit singles between then and 1956, including "Ain't That a Shame and "Blue Monday", but "Blueberry Hill", released in 1956, is by far his most successful record, selling over five million copies worldwide.
