Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Oh dear, I'm going to be late. Perhaps I could ask for longer legs from the Roman goddess Maia, who embodied growth. Which month is most likely named after her?

Answer: May

It is also possible the month of May was named after the 'maiores' or 'maior' (the 'greater' in Latin). Maia's name also derives from this Latin term, since she embodies growth.

In Greek mythology, there is also a Maia. She was said to be the eldest of the seven Pleiades (nymphs) and was a daughter of Atlas - the Titan who was punished and had to hold Earth on his shoulders.
2. Hurry, hurry, like the busy bees! Oh, here's one just now. It doesn't have a stinger, and it looks like it's ready to mate, although if it does, it won't live to boast to its pals. Which of these bees is it?

Answer: Drone

The bee colony comprises of three types:
1. Worker- Worker bees pollinate flowers, synthesise honey from nectar, feed the drones (who cannot feed themselves), and other menial tasks.
2. Drone- The drone's only purpose is to impregnate the queen. It has no stinger, but in place of the stinger is an egg-laying organ. This organ will be ripped out after mating with the queen, killing it.
3. Queen- There is typically only one queen, and she gives birth to (virtually) all the bees in a hive. Newly hatched queens will kill every other would-be-queen, although the existing queen will be allowed to live until it dies a natural death.
3. Continuing my journey, I notice a black bird overhead with a chess piece in its beak. Humorously, I note that the bird has the same name as the chess piece it took. What is the name of both the bird and the chess piece?

Answer: rook

In the game of chess, the rook appears on each corner of the 8x8 grids - two for each team. They can only move horizontally or vertically, and they grow in power throughout the game as pawns obstruct their movement less as time goes by.

On the other hand, a rook is also a bird of the corvidae (crow) family. It has black feathers and the whitish skin in front of its eyes is the most obvious feature that distinguishes it from crows, which are all black.
4. As I jog on, I notice an old friend wave at me from across the street! Ah, but I can't remember who she is. I'm sure she played Peggy Mitchell in the UK soap "EastEnders", and she was in the "Carry On" films... or something like that. Can you help me to identify her?

Answer: Barbara Windsor

Peggy Mitchell was the matriarch of the Mitchell family from 1994-2010 in the soap opera "EastEnders". She is best known for forcibly removing people from her pub, the Queen Vic. After her pub was burnt down, she left the soap.

The "Carry On" films were British comedy films mainly released between 1958 and 1978. Barbara Windsor was in ten of them, and the humour was rather slapstick.
5. Keeping up my pace, I notice a cat which looks ready to give birth. What is the average gestation period for cats?

Answer: around 2 months

The average time is around 58-66 days, and there are usually about four cats per litter. Most household cats are neutered either to prevent having to deal a surprise litter or for aggression purposes in male cats.

Although they are pets, they are also predators, and birds are their favourite prey. Sometimes they bring these birds to their owners, with good intentions, but rarely well received! That rook might want to watch its back...
6. Oh dear! I only have ten minutes to go. After checking my watch, I pick up a card on the ground - the Ace of Spades. In which of these card games would that card always win me the trick in which it was played?

Answer: Spades

Spades is a game played by four people with two pairs and with a standard 52 card deck. The aim of the game is to reach 500 points before the other pair does. This is done by declaring how many tricks individually the pairs think they can win, and then reaching that total between them and their pair.

The highest spade card always wins the trick, although spades can't be played at the start of the game. The Ace of Spades will always win when played, and particularly high bids often hint that the player has a strong spade hand.
7. As I turn a corner, I bump into someone who looks remarkably like a vampire. I quickly apologise and run, lest I become bitten. This brings to mind "The Vampire Chronicles", but do you know who wrote them?

Answer: Anne Rice

"The Vampire Chronicles" consist of ten stories. The first, "Interview With the Vampire", was written in 1976 - and the plot fits its title. The main character of most of these stories is the vampire Lestat de Lioncourt, whose character is said to be based on both the author and her husband, Stan Rice.
8. Nearly there! Hopefully, I won't be late like the White Rabbit in Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland" was for his "very important date". What was Lewis Carroll's real name?

Answer: Charles Lutwidge Dodgson

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898) had a great talent for mathematics, but had a self-confessed problem with keeping up with his studies. Even so, his main work was in this area, although it is uncertain whether he garnered satisfaction from it or not.

"Alice's Adventures In Wonderland" (shortened to "Alice In Wonderland") was published in 1865, under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. The story features a young girl, Alice, who sees the White Rabbit and follows him into the fantasy world of Wonderland. Apparently, even Queen Victoria liked it, and so it became popular.
9. I made it just in time! I'm here to watch "The Magic Flute", an opera. Do you know who composed it in 1791?

Answer: Mozart

Mozart was born in Salzburg on 1756, and was a child prodigy in the musical area, learning to compose and play music well at a very young age. "The Magic Flute" was, in fact, composed in his last year of living, just a few months before dying, and he was unable to complete his "Requiem" in time. His cause of death was unclear, but was because of an illness of some description.
10. As I sit in on the performance, I ponder that there is some subtle link between all the things I've seen and thought about in my short run from home to the opera. A common bond, if you will. Can you elucidate what this common bond is?

Answer: queen

"Quicksilver" in the title is synonymous with Mercury, and May (the correct answer to question 1), both were surnames of members of the band 'Queen'.
Question 2 - The drones aim to mate with the queen of the hive.
Question 3 - Queen is one of the other chess pieces.
Question 4 - Barbara Windsor was known as the 'Queen of Bingo' in an advertising campaign with 'Jackpotjoy.com', and was the landlady of the Queen Vic pub in the "EastEnders" soap.
Question 5 - Queening is synonymous with giving birth in cats.
Question 6 - Queen is one of the types of card used in 'Spades' (and other card games).
Question 7 - "Queen of the Damned" is the third book in "The Vampire Chronicles".
Question 8 - The Queen of Hearts is a character in "Alice In Wonderland".
Question 9 - "Queen of the Night" is a song in Mozart's "Magic Flute".
