Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Sisters" is a 2015 film that stars, in the title roles, Amy Poehler and which actress, one of the creators of the television series "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt"?

Answer: Tina Fey

The story revolves around two sisters (Poehler and Fey) whose parents are about to sell up their family and re-locate. The sisters decide to throw one last party in the home.
Directed by Jason Moore, the film did moderately well at the box office and, whilst the reviews for the film were mixed, the movie is notable for the chemistry generated on screen by its two leading ladies.

"Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" is a 2015 sitcom, sold to Netflix and was created by Fey in collaboration with Robert Carlock.
2. The Three Sisters are an iconic rock formation found in the Blue Mountains, just west of Sydney, Australia. Which town, the largest in the region, are the Sisters located in?

Answer: Katoomba

The three sandstone towers represent Meehni, Wimlah and Gunnedoo, three Aboriginal sisters who fell in love with three warriors from a neighbouring, warrior tribe. Legend has it that they were changed to stone to protect them.

Katoomba is a city of about 8,000 people, and is about 100kms west of the heart of Sydney. Emu Plains is at the eastern foot of the mountains, which are part of the Great Dividing Range. Bathurst is in the western foothills, and Broken Hill is many hundreds of kilometres further west.
3. "The Sisters" was which "Dubliner's" first published work of fiction?

Answer: James Joyce

"The Sisters", which was published in 1904, is a short story that tells the tale of the relationship between a small boy, whose name we are not told, and an infirm priest named Father Flynn. When the priest dies, the boy is haunted by his image.

The story would go on become a part of a collection of short stories, called "Dubliners", which Joyce would publish in 1914.
4. The Corrs are a contemporary musical group that comprise three sisters and one brother that gained success by combining traditional Irish themes with modern pop. Which sister is the lead singer?

Answer: Andrea

Andrea is the the youngest sibling. She sings lead and plays the tin whistle and ukulele. Oldest sibling Jim plays guitar. Sharon the oldest sister plays violin and Caroline plays drums and percussion. All three sisters sing harmonies. They first had global recognition in the mid-nineties but when they moved away from their traditional Irish roots into a mainstream synthesizer sound they had greater commercial success at the expense of critical approval.

The four siblings have had heavy philanthropic workloads in addition to their musical workloads.
5. The concept of planting the 'three sisters' of vegetables (corn, beans and squash) together, or tomatoes and basil in close proximity, is known by what term?

Answer: Companion planting

The benefits of companion planting are several; one is that one plant provides protection (shade or against insects) for the other/s; they allow maximum use of space; and they can also reinvest the soil with nutrients removed by other plants. In the case of the three sisters the plants are positioned in such a way that the corn provides support for the beans as they climb up the corn stalks, and the squash leave provide shade for the soil, aiding in water retention.

The beans add nitrogen to the soil. Growing the plants together also provided a balanced diet for the growers.

This method was used for centuries by some Native American peoples.
6. The Andrews Sisters were a trio that had a 40-year career, and were well known as entertainers in WWII. They are remembered for such hits as 'Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy', 'Rum and Coca Cola', 'Underneath the Arches', and many more. Which is NOT the name of one of the Sisters?

Answer: Julie

They had dozens of hits in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s and performed with Bing Crosby on many occasions. As well, they featured in over a dozen wartime movies, with Universal Pictures.

Julie Andrews was a British actress who starred in 'Mary Poppins' and 'The Sound of Music'.
7. The founding of which Roman Catholic community was inspired by the life and writings of Charles de Foucauld?

Answer: Little Sisters of Jesus

The movement was founded in 1939 by Little Sister Magdeleine of Jesus (Madeleine Hutin) only days after the declaration of World War II. Sister Magdeleine would proceed with the set up of her first community near a well on the outskirts of Touggourt in Algeria.

This was a meeting place for many nomads where they could care for their animals. The Sisterhood is the female alternative to the Little Brothers of Jesus, founded by Charles de Foucauld. Charles was a French Catholic priest who'd made his home on the edges of the Sahara Desert near Tuareg (Algeria).

He was assassinated by bandits in 1916 and beatified on 13 November 2005 by Pope Benedict XVI.
8. In the BioShock series of "shooter" games what was the former collective name of the "Little Sisters"?

Answer: The Gatherers

Wherever the Little Sisters go, Big Daddy is always with them. The girls have no offensive capabilities at all but they are also immune to any damage. They have been modified to extract the viscous green liquid known as ADAM from corpses. A player can rescue or harvest the Little Sisters and this will have an impact on the amount of ADAM they can claim.

However, beware, to approach the Little Sisters will incur the wrath of Big Daddy and his protectors.
