Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During the race for the (USA) Presidential election of 1912, Theodore Roosevelt was NOT selected as the Republican Party's candidate. His solution: Form his own political party and be its candidate. Which political party is Teddy Roosevelt credited with beginning?

Answer: The Progressive Party aka The Bull Moose Party

When political opponent William Howard Taft was given the nod by the Republication Party, Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt formed the Progressive Party to run against Taft in the 1912 (U.S.A.) Presidential election. Roosevelt had been influential in the political career of Taft and was disgruntled that Taft would be chosen instead of him. Roosevelt was extremely popular but, nonetheless, Taft was elected President.

The Progressive Party never enjoyed strong support from the majority of Americans but many of its issues of concern - reform in work place related issues, women's rights and the establishment of a National Healthcare Service - were worthy of attention and response.
2. The teddy (which is also spelled as teddie) is an item of lingerie which became universally appealing in the early part of the 20th century. Simply, it is a combination of a camisole and a pair of knickers; thus, its name is from the French verb, teindre, which means "to combine".

Answer: False

Although the earliest known teddies were advertised as camiknickers, teindre is French meaning "to dye". The origin of the use of "teddy" to indicate the one piece undergarment is unknown. The teddy can be appealing from both a practical perspective and that of a more seductive inclination.
3. Often overshadowed by his older brothers' reputations and his own demons (among those, public scandals and substance abuse), Edward Moore "Ted" Kennedy was none-the-less a stalwart in 20th century American politics. He served as U.S. Senator for more almost fifty years. From what U.S. state was Teddy Kennedy elected Senator?

Answer: Massachusetts

Ted Kennedy was the youngest of nine children born to Rose (Fitzpatrick) and Joseph (Sr.) Kennedy. Ted was born into an extremely prominent and powerful family from Massachusetts but he did not shun the duty that also went with that "blessing". Ted Kennedy was sworn into the Senate (for the first time) in November, 1962.

He served in that capacity until mid-2009. Health care issues were often his main focus. One of the most heart-warming things to learn about him was he compassion and concern for the families of his constituents who lost love ones in the World Trade Center tragedy of September 11, 2001. Ted Kennedy telephoned each of the (more than 175) families who lost someone in those attacks.

He also pushed legislation to establish more healthcare and grief counseling services for the survivors and their families. And, to top all of this, he most often took his dog to work with him!
4. With several top ten songs on the US R&B charts (Billboard) during the 1970s and 1980s Teddy Pendergrass was a successful artist. He started his singing/recording career as lead singer of an American R&B vocal group. Which one?

Answer: Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes

Teddy Pendergrass was not the first to perform as lead singer with Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. Pendergrass was initially recruited to be the group's drummer; at that time John Atkins was the lead singer. In less than one year John Atkins left The Blue Notes and Pendergrass was seen and heard in the capacity of lead singer. Pendergrass was with Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes for several years before he left the group to seek his solo career. Most likely, his most recognized song would be "Close the Door" that went to number one on the (USA) R&B charts in 1978.
5. Maybe not as well known as other features of the International Film Festival, the Teddy Award is unique and significant given its objective. With its roots in the 1980s in Berlin, Germany, it is an award given to aspects of the film industry from which genre/description?

Answer: Films with LGBT topics

To borrow from their webpage's own description, "The Teddy Award is a societal engaged political award, which is given to films and people, that communicate queer themes and content on a large scale and contribute with this to more tolerance, acceptance, solidarity and equality in society." It is run as a non-profit organization/event and depends on donations and contributions of its patron and volunteers. Winners in the Best Feature Film category include: "Tomcat" (2016), "Nasty Baby" (2015) and "The Way He Looks" (2014).
6. What a fun idea - teddy bears you can eat! Nabisco (National Biscuit Company - U.S.A.) enjoyed immediate success with its snack cracker/cookie in the shape of bears. Maintaining the product is a "healthy snack", it is advertised as vegan, and a good source of iron and calcium with no trans fat. What is the name of this fun food?

Answer: Teddy Grahams

Teddy Grahams are packaged as cereal and/or trail mix and are called both crackers and cookies.
7. Born in London, England in 1966, Teddy Sheringham began his professional sports career in the early 1980s. He success was both that of a player and player/manager. Among the teams on his resume are: West Ham United, Colchester United, Stevenage and England's National Team (1993-2002). What was his sport?

Answer: Football (Soccer)

With a long and successful career, Sheringham was at one time (well into the 2010s) the oldest player to participate in a Premier match and the oldest player to score in a Premier League match - when he was past 40 years old. His tenacious career as an athletic afforded him fame and his choice of companionship was also fodder for the media. According the Wikipedia, Sheringham dated models Katie Price, Nicola Smith (sister of Mandy Smith), and Danielle Lloyd.
8. In the early to mid-1990s Sela Ward played Theodora "Teddy" Reed Margolis Falconer Sorenson on an American television drama series. Other cast members of that show were: Swoosie Kurtz, Patricia Kalember and Julianne Phillips. What was the name of the series?

Answer: Sisters

"Sisters" (1991 - 1996) ran for six seasons and was critically acclaimed for its revolutionary all-female lead cast. The actresses mentioned in the question were joined by a talented supporting cast that included: Garrett M. Brown, Ed Marinaro, Heather McAdam and George Clooney, among others. Sela Ward earned an Emmy Award - Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series (1994) - during the run of the show.
9. The term "Teddy Bear Dogs" often refers to small dogs of mixed breed ancestry, most likely the result of breeding Shih Tzu and Bichon Frise parents. Although, puppies from the crossing of Poodles, Schnauzers, Pomeranians and/or other smaller, furry breeds are sometimes called "Teddy Bear Dogs", too. What is the common - and, complimentary - terminology for these mixed breed dogs?

Answer: Designer Dogs

Attempting to "create" perfection - for whatever the purpose - by crossbreeding is nothing new to life on earth, yet the demand for those breeds of dogs known as Designer Breeds surged with the close of the 20th century. The combinations seemed endless. Poodles with Labrador Retrievers became Labradoodles. Yorkshire Terriers with Poodles became YorkiePoos. Beagles with Pugs became Puggles. PLEASE! Regardless of the intended result (i.e., "breed") utmost consideration should be given to the offspring and their likelihood of living a viable and comfortable life. Knowledge of genetics, economics and sustainability are all too often overshadowed by selfishness and greed. Such should never be encouraged.
10. Sometimes wishes simply should not be granted. Case in point: In a 2012 American comedy, the stuffed teddy bear of an eight-year-old boy is brought to life. The boy's wish was (inadvertently) timed with the orbit of a shooting star. A seemingly charming situation is not without its pitfalls. What was the title of this movie that finished 2012 among the top fifteen money makers?

Answer: Ted

Ted was voiced by Seth MacFarlane. Ted's companion was a boy/man named John Bennett who was played (as an adult) by Mark Wahlberg. The supporting cast included Mila Kunis and Joel McHale. The soundtrack was fun, too, with songs from Norah Jones, Rita Coolidge, Tiffany and Hootie & The Blowfish.

The song "Everybody Needs a Best Friend" (from the movie "Ted") was nominated for a 2012 Academy Award for Best Original Song.
