Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The national anthem of Greece contains how many verses?

Answer: 158

Phew, now that is national pride for you! No-one in Greece is known to have memorised all 158 verses.
2. Why is the human hyoid bone so unique?

Answer: It's the only bone in the human body not attached to another bone

The hyoid bone is U-shaped and is found at the base of the tongue. It supports the tongue muscles.
Incidentially the tongue is the only muscle to be attached at only one end.
3. Approximately how many teeth do garden snails have?

Answer: 14000

Garden snails have thousands of teeth on their tongues in order to cut up their food as it passes through their mouth. They are a garden pest, but also some consider them a delicacy. Still, with all those teeth, how much floss are they using?
4. If you were to yell for eight years, seven months and six days, you would create enough sound energy to heat what?

Answer: A cup of coffee

Hmmmmm, hardly seems worth it does it? But I wonder if it depends on how loud you yell or what you are yelling. Maybe shouting 'I really need hot coffee now, or I will suffer from extreme caffeine withdrawal'... will help things along a bit.
5. Isaac Asimov has had books published in 9 of 10 Dewey-decimal classes. Which one hasn't he had a book published in?

Answer: 100 Philosophy and Psychology

American librarian Melvil Dewey devised the Dewey-decimal system in 1876. The system has ten main classes,
000 Generalities
100 Philosophy and Psychology
200 Religion
300 Social Science
400 Language
500 Natural Science and Mathematics
600 Technology (Applied Sciences)
700 Arts
800 Literature
900 Geography and History
6. The word 'lethologica' describes the state of what?

Answer: Not being able to remember the word you wish to use

Unfortunately lethologica is something I am often afflicted with. When it happens, I think it is best to explain that I am suffering with lethologica, the only catch is managing to remember the word 'lethologica' in the first place!
7. What is the smallest scientifically defined unit of time?

Answer: A yoctosecond

A yoctosecond is equivalent to one septillionth of a second.
A millisecond is equal to one thousandth of a second, and believe it or not, a jiffy is defined as 3.3357x10 (to the power of 11) seconds. So named for the length of time it takes light to travel a centimetre in a vacuum.
A ganglisecond to the best of my knowledge doesn't exist as I just made it up.
8. Who or what is Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipokakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu?

Answer: The name of a hill in New Zealand

Geesh...imagine getting that in a spelling test!
Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipokakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu is the full name of an otherwise unremarkable hill in New Zealand. It is 305 metres high and is near Mangaoropa.
The name roughly translates from Maori as; The brow [or summit] of the hill [or place], where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, who slid [down], climbed [up] and swallowed mountains, [to travel the land], [who is] known as the Land Eater, played [on] his [nose] flute to his loved one.
Luckily the locals often shorten the name to 'Taumata' for ease of converstaion.
9. The artist Salvador Dali once arrived to an art exhibition in a limousine filled with what?

Answer: Turnips

Salvador Dali (1904-1989) was a Spanish surrealist painter. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid but was expelled in 1923 for indiscipline.
His best known works, 'The Persistence Of Memory' and 'the Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory' which both depict the distinctive melting watches, are owned by The Museum of Modern Art in New York and The Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg respectively.
10. The dot over the letter 'i' is called a ..what?

Answer: Tittle

Tittle can also mean; the tinest bit or an iota.

Well that concludes my quiz, thanks for playing. Hope you acquired as much useless information as I did compiling it.
