Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to BBC News, your computer keyboard houses more germs than your toilet.

Answer: True

Interestingly enough, a 2004 BBC News survey found that a typical office keyboard contains 400 times the amount of microbes than the average toilet. I'm sure your keyboard at home is much cleaner than that!

Thanks to the BBC news website for that information (news.bbc.co.uk).
2. A 2005 "New York Times" survey found that what percentage of men wash their hands after going to the toilet?

Answer: 75

This must be the reason why you shouldn't eat the free peanuts in a bar! According to the same "New York Times" article, about 90% of women wash their hands after going to the toilet.

This information came from the "New York Times", Nicholas Bakalar, 2005.
3. In the US, within how many miles from one's home is a person most likely to have a car accident?

Answer: Within 10 miles

I once had an accident approximately a meter from my house! Not a serious one thankfully, but still resulted in my car being off the road for three weeks. I would have thought that if you were somewhere you didn't know, you'd be more likely to have an accident, but obviously not!

This information came from carinsurance.com (2008).
4. According to the newspaper "The Guardian" in 2010, on average how much does it cost to raise a child to the age of 21 in the UK?

Answer: £201,809

"The Guardian" suggests it costs over £200,000 to raise a child to the age of 21. Who would have thought they would have that much money to "spare" for that? The survey took into account food, clothing, and schooling, among other items.

This information came from www.guardian.co.uk.
5. According to RoSPA (The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents), which of these do it yourself items is the most dangerous?

Answer: Ladder

RoSPA states that around 41,000 people go to hospital every year thanks to ladder accidents. It's not just DIY tools that cause accidents though - approximately 60,000 people go to hospital with injuries caused by dust, splinters etc. Sounds like a good reason to get a professional in to do any work around the house!

This information came from www.rospa.com.
6. The UK's "Daily Mail" reported that the average married couple does "this" approximately 300 times a year. What am I talking about?

Answer: Argue

Quite a depressing thought, isn't it?! That's an argument nearly every day. It's enough to make you stay single.

Thanks to the UK's "Daily Mail" (2011) for this information.
7. According to a UK survey, what do 50% of men do while on the toilet?

Answer: Access the internet via their mobile phone

According to the Carphone Warehouse, about 50% of men access the internet via their mobile phone. Women, on the other hand, are likely to get online from the comfort of their bed. This was reported in "The Mirror" (UK).

This information came from www.microscope.co.uk (2011).
8. What percentage of the eligible voting population of the UK actually voted in the 2010 general election?

Answer: 65%

This figure was up by four percent from the 2005 general election voting results. In 2001, only about 59% voted in the UK general election.

This information comes from the BBC.
9. The average UK motorist encounters 13 of these on his or her standard journey. What am I talking about?

Answer: potholes

The survey was promoted by Autoglass in 2010. Potholes can lead to serious automobile destruction.

Thanks to the UK "Daily Mail" (2010) for this information.
10. What is thought to be the cause of 33,000 deaths in the UK each year?

Answer: Alcohol

Sobering thought! The guidelines from the UK Department of Health for alcohol consumption state that a woman should drink no more than 2-3 units daily. For men, the amount is 3-4 units daily.

This information comes from Drinkaware (www.drinkaware.co.uk).
