Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Artists: Born in 1887, this artist specialised in landscape scenes, normally on wood or in watercolour. Who is he?

Answer: James Dickson Innes

James Dickson Innes was born in Llanelli, Wales. He studied at Carmarthen Art School and Slade School of Fine Art. His early work was Impressionist but he transitioned into Post-Impressionism. He died in 1914 in Swanley, Kent, of tuberculosis. A number of his works are on display at the Tate Gallery in London.

Julius Caesar Ibbetson (yes, that was his real name) was born in 1759 in Churlwell Bank, Yorkshire, England. He was a watercolour artist, who also did etchings and some oils. He specialised in landscapes but also ventured into some maritime scenes, often of sailors carousing. His true specialty was forgery, and he was sometimes known as "the Berchem of England". He died in 1817, in Masham, England, having published a treatise on oil painting which showed his mastery of the subject.

John William Inchbold was a Pre-Raphaelite painter who specialised in landscapes. He was born in Leeds, UK, in 1830 and studied (according to his obituary) at the Royal Academy Schools (although he is not apparently listed on their register). He also published a volume of poetry in 1877. He died in 1888 in Leeds.

"Is it deep sleep, or is it rather death?
Rest anyhow it is, and sweet is rest:--
No more the doubtful blessing of the breath..." (from Inchbold's "One Dead")

William Hyde Irwin was born in San Francisco, California, in 1903. He studied at Stanford University, and pursued art studies at the CCAC, Académies Moderne and Colarossi in Paris, and at University of California Berkeley. He died in 1982 after a career which included teaching art at high school and university level.
2. Cheers! This cocktail is made with 1/2 oz each gin, light rum, vodka, peach schnapps, Blue Curacao liqueur, triple sec and 1 can Red Bull energy drink. Fill a glass with ice, add the liqueurs then pour the Red Bull over it all... What is its name? The usual disclaimer applies, I take no responsibility for anything done by anyone testing out the recipes. Drink responsibly, please.

Answer: Irish Trash Can

The Irish Trash Can will probably trash the average drinker... the "Irish" comes from the drink turning green as the Red Bull seeps down through the liqueurs.

The Iguana is made by mixing 1/2 oz each vodka and tequila, 1/4 oz coffee liqueur and 1 1/2 oz sweet and sour mix in a shaker. Strain into a glass and garnish with 1/2 slice lime.

The Ironman is 3 oz Seagram's 7 whisky and 3 oz vodka mixed in a glass; add some ice then fill with soda water.

The "It's a Secret" cocktail is 1/4 oz each Jack Daniel's whiskey, Crown Royal Canadian whisky, Southern Comfort and Blue Curacao liqueur. Pour into the glass in that order... then bottoms up!
3. Rock on... Which band recorded the album "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida"?

Answer: Iron Butterfly

If you missed this one, you're either a Gen X'er or you fit the definition of the '60s - if you remember the '60s, you weren't really there...

Iron Butterfly started out as a San Diego band in the heady early days of psychedelia, 1966. Don Ingle and Ron Bushy were the only two original members in the band by 1968, when their second album, "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" was released. The title track ran 17 minutes. Various sources differ on the mental and physical condition of the lead singer when it was written, as he was trying to sing "In the Garden of Eden, honey, don't you know that I'm lovin' you" (alt: "In the Garden of Venus...")

The group has reconstituted itself several times and still tours. Of the four members who recorded this album, Ron Bushey (drums) and Lee Dorman (bass) are still active in it, Don Ingle occasionally tours with them but has not recorded with them, and Erik Brann (guitar) died in 2003 of a heart attack at age 52.

If was a late-1960s British jazz/rock band. Members of the group were John Mealing (who then joined The Strawbs), Dennis Elliott (who went to Foreigner), Terry Smith and Dave Quincy (Zzebra), J.W. Hodkinson (Wolf), Jim Richardson (who went on to do session work) and Dick Morrissey (Average White Band).

Incubus is a more modern group, having formed in 1991 while its members were still in high school. Their genre is funk/alternative/hard rock.

Iron Maiden is one of the early heavy metal bands, formed in 1975 by Steve Harris, Dave Murray and others.
4. Pack your bags: Which country is slightly larger than Alaska in land area, with a population of 65.4 million in July 2007, a median age of 25.8 years, a life expectancy of 70.5 years and a literacy rate of 79.4% of those over age 15?

Answer: Iran

The Islamic Republic of Iran is often in our newspapers and television news reports for its intransigence over it use of nuclear power. It is a theocratic republic - the elected rulers can be overruled by the mullahs - with 30 districts and its capital at Tehran. Most of its economy is based on oil and is controlled by the state. Economic reforms have faltered, and 40% of the population live below the poverty line. Infant mortality is high, with 38.12 deaths per 1,000 live births. The country is predominantly Muslim. Under 10% of the land is arable.

The Republic of Indonesia is an archipelagio of 17,508 islands (6,000 of which are inhabited) between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Again a majority Muslim nation, it is not ruled as an Islamic state, although some extremist groups seek to bring Sharia law to the country. It is almost three times the size of Texas in land area, with a population of 234.7 million in July 2007, a median age of 26.9 years, a life expectancy of 70.16 years and a literacy rate of 87.9% of those over age 15. Its capital is Jakarta.

The Republic of Iraq is a country undergoing major changes in 2007. It is a little more than twice the size of Idaho in land area, with a population of 27.5 million in July 2007, a median age of 20 years, a life expectancy of 69.3 years and a literacy rate of 40.4% of those over age 15. Its capital is Baghdad. Its economy is oil-based. The country was created at the fall of the Ottoman Empire, and comprises traditional areas of the Kurds, the Sunni Muslims and the Shi'a Muslims. Tensions are high between the three groups, and the country's future was still up in the air as of May 2007.

Italy is about the size of Arizona. It has a population of 58 million in July 2007, a median age of 42.5 years, a life expectancy of 80 years and a literacy rate of 98.6% of those over age 15. Its capital is Rome. As a member of the European Union, it is part of a vigorous economic bloc, but it still has internal challenges with corruption and high unemployment, especially in the south.
5. Music, music! What composer was born in 1883 and is known for the music of one country composed while living in another country?

Answer: Manuel Infante

Manuel Infante wsa born in Osuna, Spain. He moved to Paris in 1909, and composed music for the piano, most with a Spanish nationalist flavour. He died in Paris in 1958.

Vincent D'Indy couldn't be more French. He was born in 1851 in Paris and studied law to please his father; however, he had decided on a career in music and so then studied under Cesar Franck at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he taught until his death in 1931. His best-known work is the 1886 "Symphony on a French Mountain Air", with its haunting melodies based on French folk songs.

John Nicholson Ireland was born in 1879 near Manchester, England. He wrote a variety of types of music, including a film score. He also was sub organist at Holy Trinity Church, Chelsea, London, and taught at the Royal College of Music. He died in 1962 in Sussex, England.

Jessie Seymour Irvine was born in 1836 in Dunottar, Scotland. She was the daughter of a vicar, and likely never married but instead lived with her father until her death in 1887. Her musical "claim to fame" is for having written the hymn known as "Crimond".
6. Can you remember grade school geography? What state is the 38th largest state in the US but is the 14th most populous?

Answer: Indiana

Indiana: Capital - Indianapolis; area - 36,240 sq miles; population (in 2000) 6,080,485; state bird - cardinal; state flower - peony; state tree - tulip tree. Indiana was the 19th state in the USA; it became a state on December 11, 1816.

Idaho: Capital - Boise; area - 83,574 sq miles; population (in 2000) 1,293,953; state bird - mountain bluebird; state flower - syringa; state tree - western white pine. Idaho was the 43rd state in the USA; it became a state on July 3, 1890.

Illinois: Capital - Springfield; area - 57,918 sq miles; population (in 2000) 12,419,293; state bird - cardinal; state flower - native violet; state tree - white oak. Illinois was the 21st state in the USA; it became a state on December 3, 1818.

7. Going to the dogs: Which breed is of medium size, with a dense, curly coat, a "rat tail", a soft mouth and a love of hunting and retrieving?

Answer: Irish Water Spaniel

The Irish Water Spaniel may have descended from poodles and Irish setters; the chap really does look like a standard poodle with his tight ringlets. Also like a poodle, he does not moult (shed). Average weight is in the 50-60 lb range and height is around 23-24".

The Irish Setter is a clown. His beautiful red coat is feathery and flowing, and he stands about 25-27" and weighs 60-70 lbs. He may be high-strung but is not of an aggressive nature and is absolutely useless as a guard dog - he loves everyone. Irish Setters do need a LOT of exercise and they love to run.

The Irish Terrier is a small dog, weighing around 25-27 lbs and standing about 18" at the shoulder. He is a fearless hunter who makes a great family pet, very loyal and loving and protective of "his" family. His wiry coat is reddish or wheaten, solid; a small amount of white on the chest is permissable but not ideal.

The Irish Wolfhound is a giant, standing 30-32" at the shoulder (and up to 7' standing on his back paws!). He weighs in at 105-120 lbs, has the appearance of a rather shaggy greyhound, and has the temperment of a pussycat. He is not a guard dog, but is very loyal to his family and friendly to all. He doesn't need a lot of exercise, but does need room to run and is not suited to a small living area.
8. Kinsey Millhone returns: In Sue Grafton's alphabetical series of detective stories, what is the title of the "I" book?

Answer: I is for Innocent

It's "I is for Innocent". Kinsey was fired - now she's fired up with trying to determine whether a rich woman was killed by her second husband - or her first - or someone else entirely. And how did the previous investigator on the case really die? And who is trying to kill her, now that she has taken over the case?
9. Movin' on Up: Which 15th-16th c castle stood on a high hill, was pentagonal in plan with four towers and a projection with arrow slits?

Answer: Ivano-Frankivsk

Castle Ivano-Frankivsk is in western Ukraine, in the Carpathian mountains. There's not a lot of it left standing. It is also called Pniv Castle.

Inveraray Castle is in Strathclyde in Scotland. It's a fake, as true castles go - it was built in the mid-1700s on the site of the original village of Inveraray. The village was rebuilt a mile away, so as not to spoil the view from the castle. It is the seat of the Duke of Argyll and Chief of the Campbell clan.

Castle Iscar is in Spain, near Valladolid. The original castle on the site was probably built around 939 AD by the Moors. All that remains now is the 15th c keep and a few fragments of wall.

Castle Iziaslav is also in western Ukraine, near the town of Iziaslav. It is a 16th c building now in ruins, with the Treasury and a basement surviving at least partially intact. In its heyday it was the home of the Sangushky family. Clearly it was once very beautiful, and records show it once held a great collection of books and artwork.
10. Languages of the World: An extinct language of Erromanga Island, Vanuatu, the last speaker died in 1954, what was it called?

Answer: Ifo

And that's all there is about Ifo, folks.

Igo is heard around the village of Sassanou in Togo, with about 6,000 people (1995) having some fluency in the language. At that time about 2,000 people could read it and 1,000 write it. While it is not the primary language it appears to be in general usage.

Ito is spoken by a small population in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.

Iyo is found in the Madang Province of Papua New Guinea. While it is confined to a smallish population - under 7,000 in 2003 - it appears to be in general usage, with a grammar and portions of the Bible having been translated into the language.
