Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Officially known as the Republic of Togo, the country was once known as Togoland. From 1884-1914, Togoland was a protectorate of which European country?

Answer: Germany

Portuguese explorers came to Togo during the latter part of the 15th century. Not much is known about the country before that. Germany took control in 1884. After World War I, France and England gained control of Togo, dividing it into French Togoland and British Togoland. Finally, after much political maneuvering, Togo became an independent country in 1960.
2. Which of the following cities is both the capital and largest city of Togo?

Answer: Lomé

This coastal city is situated on the Gulf of Guinea. As such it is an important port as well as being the administrative hub of Togo.
3. The country of Benin borders Togo to the east while Burkina Faso borders the country to the north. Which country borders Togo to the west?

Answer: Ghana

If you look at a map of Africa, you'll notice that Togo is a very narrow country sandwiched between Ghana and Benin. It seems tiny in comparison with the larger countries of Algeria and Sudan. The Gulf of Guinea lies south of Togo.
4. Togo has an official language. Which language is it?

Answer: French

French may be Togo's official language but there are many indigenous languages and dialects spoken within the different regions of the country. Some examples are Ewé, spoken in the southern regions, and Kabye, spoken in the north. French is the country's only written language.
5. Which of the following leaders served as Togo's first President?

Answer: Sylvanus Olympio

Sylvanus served as Prime Minister before he became President of Togo in 1958. He only served until 1963 because he was assassinated during a military coup in the capital city of Lomé. The coup was led by Emmanuel Bodjolle, Kléber Dadjo, and Étienne Eyadéma, all three later serving as President or interim President of Togo.
6. A significant number of Togolese practice which of the following religions?

Answer: Voodoo

Those who practice voodoo beliefs follow their own village voodoo priest. The majority of the people practice indigenous beliefs while there are certain minorities of Christian and Muslim followers.
7. Which of the following major rivers is located in Togo?

Answer: Mono

Togo is a land of geographical contrasts. It's divided into six regions: coastal, savannah plains, mountains, tableland, lakes, and the higher elevation consisting of cliffs made from granite and a metomorphic rock known as gneiss. The Mono River is a major river located in eastern Togo.
8. Togo's flag consists of Pan-African colors; red, gold, and green. The only star, located in the top left-hand corner, is not one of these colors. What color is it?

Answer: White

Togo adopted its flag in 1960 when it gained its independence from France. Each color is significant. The green represents agriculture, the gold represents mineral wealth, the red square represents patriotism, and the white star represents peace.
9. Koutammakou, a settlement in north-eastern Togo, is known as the "Land of the Batammariba". What is this area known for?

Answer: Mud tower-houses

Since 2004 Koutammakou has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The inhabitants are Batammariba, indigenous people who live in Togo and Benin. Their mud tower-houses are as individual as the people themselves. Some are two story, some have flat roofs, while others, which house granaries, have pitched thatched roofs.

The homes are not only built with form and function in mind, but each home is built within a social structure.
10. In the U.S. we celebrate Veterans Day in November to honor those who have served and died for their country. The Togolese have a similar holiday. What is it called?

Answer: Martyrs' Day

The Togolese celebrate Martyrs' Day on June 21. Martyrs' Day is also celebrated in other African countries, although not necessarily the same day.
