Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In many European and South American nations, the act of taking your fist and punching it into the elbow joint and then following that by raising your opposite fist in front of you might get you in trouble if used (for example) at a popular sporting event. What is this motion commonly called?

Answer: Forearm Jerk

At soccer (futbol) events in many parts of Southern Europe and in Brazil, the forearm jerk is used as a means to send offensive messages to fans or players of the opposing team. If you are from a nation where this message is seen differently, you may want to consider choosing a more appropriate gesture when attending a game to save yourself the trouble of either getting into a fight or perhaps kicked out of the game completely!
2. The "mountza" is a hand signal that might be seen in many English speaking nations as denoting the number five. But in which of the following countries might this be seen as a traditional insult?

Answer: Greece

In Greek culture, raising your hand with your palm out with your fingers and thumb spread apart (almost like giving a high-five) is considered a rude and offensive insult. In historical times, criminals would often be paraded around through local streets and citizens would rub gross substances on the criminals as an insult using the palms of their hands.

Many other countries including Mexico, Armenia, Panama, and Nigeria also see this gesture as offensive. In North America, a less offensive version known as "Talk to the Hand" became a popular method of telling someone to "be quiet" or "shut up".
3. You are on vacation in South Korea or Japan. Which of the following might be considered rude to do in a restaurant in one of these countries?

Answer: Offering a tip

If you happened to pick "eating all of your food", this might be offensive in Chinese culture. In China, it is customary to leave a little bit of food on your plate to let the waiter know that you are "full". In Korea and Japan, it is customary to eat all food on your plate as it is a sign that you didn't like the food if you leave leftovers.

One thing that the Korean and Japanese cultures do have in common that is considered rude, however, is that of leaving a tip. Tips are typically not accepted by waiters and waitresses because they view it as "their job" to provide excellent service, whereas in Western society it is viewed that if people want better service, they should pay more for it. In China, tipping in the service industry is also not encouraged with the exception of tour guide services. It is often common practice for many tour companies to accept the lowest bid (so they do not have to pay their employees full rate). In these instances, their companies encourage their guides to get tips (often having the employees to beg tourists for tips), so that they will make more than the minimum wages they are being paid.
4. Continuing with offensive things to do when it comes to food, is it considered offensive in the Middle East or India to eat with your right hand?

Answer: No

Actually, it is the very opposite. In specific places such as Saudi Arabia or Southern India, it is considered extremely rude to eat anything with your "left" hand. The left hand is seen as a faux pas because it is associated with bodily functions such as wiping after using the washroom.

In fact, in Southern parts of India, it is not even recommended to touch a plate with your left hand. Left-handed citizens from these nations are often taught to either be ambidextrous or to eat with their right hand.

In these locations, it is often an exception to allow persons with disabilities or amputees to eat with their left hand.
5. In the United Kingdom, which of the following terms is sometimes claimed to be offensive, even when its use is not intended to offend?

Answer: All three

In a number of regional UK dialects, "dearie", "darling", and "love" are all terms that are commonly used in colloquial speech even when speaking to a complete stranger. For example, it is common in the north of England for a shop assistant to say to any customer "Here's your change, love". However, some people claim that such terms are offensive and patronising, and should be discouraged, especially by those working in service industries.

In the United Kingdom, it is accepted practice to hold doors open for those behind you, and (in polite society) to stand when a woman enters the room. When in England, avoid practices such as mimicking or mocking a British accent. Also, never butt into the front of a line (or "queue", as the Brits would call it) as this is one of the worst sins you could commit. In England in particular, you should avoid being early when invited to someone's home. Instead, arriving 10-20 minutes late is acceptable.

If you intend to travel to other parts of the United Kingdom such as Scotland or Northern Ireland, it is generally encouraged to avoid discussing historically touchy subjects such as religion or politics. If you are planning on attending a function in Wales or Scotland, it is accepted practice to attend the function slightly early or on time.
6. When travelling in Australia or New Zealand, it is considered rude to sit in the back of which of the following vehicles?

Answer: Taxi cab

In North America, when travelling alone it is typically common to hail a taxi cab and then enter the back seat of the car. Only when travelling in groups do North Americans typically sit in the front seat of a taxi. One reason for doing so is that authorities encourage this process for safety reasons.

In New Zealand and Australia, however, unless you are travelling in large groups, it is in bad form to sit in the back seat of a taxi. If you are alone and sit in the back seat, cab drivers often feel that they are your personal chauffeur and that you are being a "snob".

Avoid sitting in the back seat whenever possible.
7. Flatulence or "farting", while rude and often smelly, often comes off as humorous or embarrassing behavior in Western society. In Muslim culture, however, flatulence is a bodily function that can actually invalidate what common religious practice?

Answer: Wudu

Wudu is the traditional Muslim procedure for washing parts of the human body using water. To be properly completed, the water used in the wudu practice must be clean and pure, from a tank or a pond, or come from a well. Wudu is a procedure that is done in preparation for doing prayers and for handling of the Qur'an.

A variety of unclean habits may cause wudu to be invalidated including flatulence, blood or pus, excrement, smoking, or fainting.
8. During a diplomatic mission in Iraq in 1995, U.S. Congressman Bill Richardson committed what fashion faux pas that prompted Iraqi president Saddam Hussein to leave the room completely offended?

Answer: He showed the sole of his shoes

Congressman Bill Richardson traveled to Iraq for a diplomatic meeting to try and negotiate the return of two U.S. citizens, aerospace workers David Daliberti and Bill Barloon, that were being detained at the Abu Ghuraib prison. At one point during the meeting, Saddam Hussein stood up and walked out of the meeting.

At first it was unknown the reason for this sudden absence, but an aide present at the meeting explained that because the meeting was a "formal" one, Bill Richardson's lounging stature was seen as disrespectful. Richardson re-positioned himself in his chair and placed his feet firm and flat on the floor. Hussein eventually would return.

Their negotiations were successful in the end and the aerospace workers were returned to the United States.
9. The use of the word "poop" during a regular conversation is considered slightly offensive in most English-speaking cultures around the world. On naval ships however, the word "poop" in formal conversation is commonly used to refer to what?

Answer: The deck that forms the roof of a cabin

The deck that forms the roof of the cabin built near the rear of the ship was commonly referred to as the "poop deck". It is a term that originated from the French word "poupe" which means "stern". On historical ships, the helmsman was situated in the poop deck as it gave them an ideal position for navigation and observation of the sea. On modern ships, these duties are now done on the bridge of the ship typically located on either the starboard side or the center of the ship.
10. In North America, raising your middle finger towards someone is typically regarded as an offensive gesture. What has generally been accepted as being the first documented appearance of the middle finger being given in the United States?

Answer: A photograph of a baseball player

At a baseball game between the Boston Beaneaters and the New York Giants in 1886, a photograph of pitcher Charles "Old Hoss" Radbourn was taken in which he was giving the middle finger to a rival player on the New York Giants team. Radbourn was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939 after an 11 year career spanning from 1880 to 1891. During his career he posted a win-loss record of 309-194 and 1,830 strikeouts.
