Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Yuri Gagarin and John Glenn both orbited the earth in April 1961 and February 1962 respectively. Their flight paths were in the same direction. Which way did they go?

Answer: Counter-clockwise (west to east) against earth's rotation

Gagarin was the first but made only one orbit. Glenn completed three.
2. "She'll be coming ______ the mountain when she comes,.." Which way?

Answer: Around

A very popular folk song, it was derived from a Negro Christian Spiritual sung to the same music, "When The Chariot Comes". The secular version became popular with railroad workers in the late 1900s
3. Christopher Columbus made his first journey across the Atlantic Ocean with his fleet in 1492 originally looking to discover a western water route from Europe to the Orient. The mission wound up landing in parts of the "New World". Which way did they go?

Answer: Bahamas, then Cuba

Columbus and his men never set foot on the North American mainland in all four of his journeys across the sea. The closest he came was in the Bahamas and then Cuba on the first trip while landing further away on the subsequent trips.
4. The Roald Amundsen and Robert Scott parties both set out within days of each other in late 1911 to reach the South Pole first. Both groups approached from the same direction obviously heading south but from what side of the world? Which way did they go?

Answer: From the New Zealand side of Antactica on the Ross Shelf

Through proper planning, the Amundsen expedition arrived at the pole first on December 14, 1911, a month before Scott and his men, who had encountered many unforeseen problems in their attempt.
5. Late in 1889, two women journalists traveled around the world in opposite directions inspired by the 1873 book by Jules Verne "Around The World In Eighty Days" Which way did they go?

Answer: Elizabeth Jane Cochrane headed east while Elizabeth Bisland headed west.

Both ladies wrote for competing newspapers (The New York World featuring Cochrane and Cosmopolitan showcasing Bisland) and word of the progress generated much public attention. Cochrane went by the pen name of "Nellie Bly" and published her own book telling of her experiences in "Around The World In Seventy-Two Days" the following year.
6. The 1994 blockbuster film "Speed" concerns passengers who are traveling. Which way did they go?

Answer: By bus

Eleven GM New Look buses, as well as three additional Grumman 870 buses, were used in the filming. The movie debuted in number one position and grossed $14.5 million on opening weekend.
7. American aviator Douglas Corrigan earned the nickname "Wrong Way" in 1938 after flying the transcontinental trip from Long Beach, CA to New York City. On his return trip, which way did he go?

Answer: East to Ireland

Although his flight plans showed he would be returning from Floyd Bennet Field in Brooklyn back to Long Beach, he blamed his error on heavy cloud cover and low light conditions obscuring landmarks and his compass.
8. Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson and his attorney are driving from Barstow, CA in The Great Red Shark. Which way did they go?

Answer: To Las Vegas

Thompson wrote "Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas" in 1971, originally serialized in installments for Rolling Stone Magazine. Quite a road trip. Gonzo journalism blurs the lines between fact and fiction often including the reporter as part of the event.
9. If the cattle rustlers headed to hide out at the Ponderosa Ranch, which way did they go?

Answer: South of Reno, NV

Home of the Cartwrights on TV's "Bonanza" program, the Ponderosa Ranch was just east of Lake Tahoe. The burning map at the beginning of each airing was disoriented as due north was shown on the left side as opposed to the top of the map.
10. "They went that-a-way" is a line usually attributed to which genre of older films?

Answer: Western

Most often a response from a bystander who is pointing in the direction of escaping outlaws.
