Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First known for his one man stand-up comedy routine and then for his very successful TV show about an African-American family, this father had five children of his own. Do you remember who he was?

Answer: Bill Cosby

William Henry Cosby, Jr. was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1937. Mr. Cosby started his professional career as a stand up comic.

In 1969, he broke racial barriers by starring in "I Spy" (1965-1968). As the character Alexander Scott, Cosby became the first African American to star in a major network television show. Before its premiere, Cosby was concerned that TV stations might not air the program because of his presence in it. Only four stations located in Florida, Georgia and Alabama refused to air the show.

Mr. Cosby has had numerous vehicles for his talent including "The Bill Cosby Show" (1969-1971) as Chet Kincaid, "The Cosby Show"(1984-1992) as Dr. Heathcliff "Cliff" Huxtable and "Cosby" (1996-2000) as Hilton Lucas. Cosby was also the driving force behind several children's shows including "Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids" (1972-1979).

Bill Cosby has pitched products like Jell-O Pudding and Kodak Film. He has won five Emmys and two Golden Globes. His estimated net worth is placed at a little over $300 million.

Bill Cosby has four daughters. His only son, Ennis, was shot in 1997 while he was attempting to change a tire on a freeway in Los Angeles, California.
2. Did Bing Crosby's son, Gary, write a tell-all and very unflattering book about his father?

Answer: Yes

Gary Crosby penned a very unflattering portrait of his father, Bing Crosby in the book "Going My Way"(1984). In it, Gary purported that his father had both psychologically and physically abused him and his three brothers, Phillip, Dennis and Lindsay. Phillip denied all of these accusations. Dennis and Lindsay agreed with Gary. Lindsay Crosby shot himself in the head in 1989. Dennis Crosby also committed suicide in the same manner in 1991. Gary died in 1995 of lung cancer and Phillip had a heart attack and died in 2004.

Harry Lillis Crosby (Bing Crosby) was born in 1903 in Tacoma, Washington and died in 1977. Mr. Crosby was the fourth of seven children. He mastered in many career paths including radio, movies, television, music and golf!

Crosby won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1944 for his portrayal of Father Chuck O'Malley in "Going My Way". Twenty-three of his musical albums went either gold or platinum. His biggest musical hit came in 1942 with his rendition of Irving Berlin's "White Christmas". Although critically panned for the most part, Bing Crosby starred with Bob Hope in seven "Road" films.

Bing Crosby was married to Dixie Lee from 1930 until her death in 1952. They had four sons, Gary, twins Phillip and Dennis and Lindsay. In 1957, he married Kathryn Grant and had three more children, Harry, Mary (J.R. Ewing should have watched out for her!) and Nathaniel.
3. Although he had no natural born children of his own, George Washington is widely known in the USA as the "Father of Our Country" because he _________ .

Answer: was the first president of the United States

There are several reasons why George Washington (1732-1799) was called "The Father of Our Country". He was, in fact, the first president of the United States of America. In addition to this, he was the Commander-in-Chief of the American forces during the Revolutionary War. His attitude during this war, it is said, made the difference between victory and defeat because of his personal refusal to give up, his determination and his leadership.

Not wanting to be cast in the role of "king" by the new nation (as many people wanted him to be), Washington took great pains to be sure that he continued to be a man of the people after his unanimous election to the presidency in 1789. He arrived in New York City (the capital at the time) before the new US Congress took up their duties. Washington did not do anything official until they convened.

Washington was offered the sum of $25,000 for his salary as president; he turned it down. For his inauguration, he wore plain clothes. He stepped down from the presidency voluntarily after two terms.

At Washington's funeral in 1799, Henry Lee praised him by saying, "(Washington) was the first in war, the first in peace and the first in our hearts." I guess that pretty well sums up most of the reasons that George Washington is called, "The Father of Our Country."
4. Who was the president with the most children including eight with his first wife and seven with his second wife?

Answer: John Tyler

John Tyler's first wife was Letitia Christian. They had eight children together including Mary, Robert, John, Letitia, Elizabeth, Anne Contesse, Alice and Tazewell. These children were born before Tyler was president.

After the death of Letitia, Tyler married Julia Gardiner. Seven more children arrived. They were David, John Alexander, Julia, Lachlan, Lyon, Robert and Pearl. John Tyler was 70 years of age when his last child was born.

William Henry Harrison (whose death precipitated John Tyler becoming president) had ten children. Harry Truman had one daughter. Grover Cleveland had five children.
5. A.A. Milne wrote about Winnie the Pooh and his best friend, Christopher Robin. The character of Christopher was based on someone very near and dear to A.A. Milne's heart, his _____ .

Answer: son

Some of the most endearing characters in children's literature are that "silly old bear" and his friends: Piglet, Owl, Rabbit,Tiger, Eeyore, Kanga and Roo. A.A. Milne wrote two books with Christopher Robin and company: "Winnie the Pooh" (1926) and "The House at Pooh Corner" (1928). Christopher Robin and Winnie the Pooh were also part of two books of poetry by A.A. Milne, "When We Were Young" (1924) and "Now We Are Six" (1927).

Although flattered when he was a child to be part of the Winnie the Pooh saga, as Christopher Robin Milne grew up, he began to resent his name being used in such a way. He later wrote, "It seemed to me almost that my father had got where he was by climbing on my infant shoulders, that he had filched from me my good name and left me nothing but empty fame."
6. President Barack Obama has demonstrated to the world on several occasions that he is a loving and caring father to his two girls. What are their names? (full given names, please)

He subsequently lost both of his legs in an automobile accident. In 1982, he died at the age of 46 due to another car crash.

Barack met his wife, Michelle, in Chicago, Illinois in 1989. Michelle Robinson was born in 1964 and was raised on the South Side of Chicago. Her parents, Fraser Robinson III and Marian Shields Robinson, worked hard to provide a positive childhood for both Michelle and her brother, Craig. Mrs. Obama graduated from Princeton University and Harvard Law School.

Michelle's brother, Craig, is currently the head basketball coach at Oregon State University. Michelle's parents can trace their ancestry back to pre-Civil War America, when their ancestors were slaves in South Carolina. Some of Michelle's relatives still reside in South Carolina.

In 1998, Michelle and Barack Obama welcomed Malia Ann followed by Natasha in 2001. Both girls now attend Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C.

Charles Phillip Ingalls (1836-1902) married Caroline Quiner on February 1, 1860. They had four daughters and one son. Their son, Charles Frederick "Freddy" Ingalls did not survive infancy. Their daughters included Mary(1865-1928), Laura(1867-1957), Carrie(1870-1946) and Grace(1877-1941).

On the television show, Melissa Sue Anderson played the oldest daughter, Mary. Melissa Gilbert portrayed Laura. Caroline (Carrie) was played by Linday and Sidney Greenbush. Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington thought of setting aside a day for fathers after listening to a sermon delivered on Mother's Day in 1909. She felt that her father and all fathers should have a special day designated to them, much as mothers were honored on "Mother's Day".

President Johnson officially established the national holiday. The pronouncement called for the third Sunday of June to be set aside to honor fathers.
