Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Geography: Which of the following countries is considered to be a 'perforated' state?

Answer: South Africa

A perforated state is one whose land completely surrounds the territory of another country. South Africa completely surrounds the territory of Lesotho. Another example of a perforated state? Italy, which surrounds both San Marino and the Vatican.
2. History: During which Roman emperor's reign was citizenship offered to all subjects of the empire?

Answer: Caracalla

Caracalla wasn't an extremely popular fellow, he had secured the position of Emperor by murdering his brother Geta and thousands of his followers. This is probably the reason he opened up the status of citizenship to the provincials, for more support!
3. Art: We all know that Michelangelo was the painter of the Sistine Chapel ceiling. The walls of the Sistine Chapel were also painted by a number of Renaissance masters, including all but which of the following?

Answer: Leonardo

Leonardo was not involved in any form with the painting of the Sistine Chapel, but all of these other masters, along with Signorelli and Rosselli, were involved in the painting of the walls.
4. Myth: 'Xibalba' was the underworld (hell) in the myth system of which of the following ancient cultures?

Answer: Mayan

Xibalba was ruled over by the Mayan Jaguar God, a ferocious creature of the darkness that also happened to be the symbol of power and fertility!
5. Language: The 'click languages' associated with the Bushmen of Southern Africa are part of which language family?

Answer: Khoisan

The major members of the Khoisan family are the Khoikhoin and San languages. The click sounds employed by Khoisan speakers are used as a subsystem for consonantal sounds.
6. World Religion: What is the term for the men who summon Muslims to prayer in the cities of the Islamic world?

Answer: Muezzin

A muezzin stands atop a minaret (tower) and calls to the faithful to begin prayer. This tradition was begun in Mohammed's time, as he disliked the sound of bells!
7. Biochemistry: The first enzyme to be discovered was diastase, but which French chemist made this fortunate discovery?

Answer: Anselme Payen

Diastase is a component of malt which contains beta-amylase, a key to beermaking. For this I can only say...thank you Mr. Payen!
8. Biology: What is the term for a plant that grows upon another plant but does not act as a parasite?

Answer: Epiphyte

Lichens and mosses are types of epiphytes.
9. Anatomy: Which part of the ear derives its name from the Latin word for 'wing'?

Answer: Pinna

The pinna is the outer ear made mostly from cartilage. I suppose that on some people (and elephants), if the pinnas are large enough and protrude outward they could appear to have winglike qualities.
10. Natural History: During which geological period of the Palaeozoic Era did the first vertebrates begin to appear?

Answer: Ordovician

During the Ordovician Epoch, all life was still confined to the sea. In addition to the first vertebrates, coral reefs also began to appear during this Epoch. Thank you for daring to try this tough quiz, I suspect there will be more to come!
