Over time she came to be seen by Catholics/Nationalists as an Irish heroine fighting the British for Irish freedom and the Protestants/Unionists as a British heroine fighting for their religious freedom.

When a memorial was unveiled to her memory 100 years after her death, at the Battle of Ballynahinch, the meeting of the two sides resulted in a riot.

An American sharpshooter shot and killed him at the Battle of North Point a month later.
