1. The traditional county of Angus lies to the north of the Firth of Tay. Which large city was part of the county until 1996, when it became a unitary authority?

Answer: Dundee

Dundee, nicknamed the "City of Discovery", has been a stand-alone local area since 1996, but dominates the Angus area economically. Strangely enough, even when it was officially part of Angus, it was never the County Town.
2. Prior to 1928, Angus was named after its County Town; what was its original name?

Answer: Forfarshire

Forfar is the traditional county town of Angus, and the name Forfarshire is still sometimes used in local sporting competitions.
3. The seaside town of Carnoustie is a famous venue in which sport?

Answer: Golf

Carnoustie had been the host of the (British) Open Championship seven times by 2012. Widely regarded as one of the toughest courses on the Open rota, previous champions there include Ben Hogan, Tom Watson and Padraig Harrington.
4. The market town of Kirriemuir is the birthplace of which famous children's author?

Answer: J.M. Barrie

J.M. Barrie was born in Kirriemuir in 1860. A statue of his most famous creation, Peter Pan, stands in the town centre.
5. Which castle in the county of Angus was the summer home of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, and the birthplace, in 1930, of Princess Margaret?

Answer: Glamis Castle

Glamis Castle is situated near the village of the same name. The original castle was mentioned in Shakespeare's "Macbeth", but the current building dates from the 15th century. The castle is home to the Earl of Strathmore but is open to the public.
6. Which type of fish is smoked to create the Angus delicacy known as the Arbroath Smokie?

Answer: Haddock

The Arbroath Smokie actually originated in the village of Auchmithie near Arbroath. The recipe is thought to have been discovered by accident when a shed filled with salted haddock caught fire.

Answer: Glen Coe

Glen Coe, famous for the 1692 massacre, is located in the historic county of Invernessshire. The Five Glens of Angus are Glenisla, Glen Prosen, Glen Clova, Glen Lethnot and Glen Esk.
8. Central Angus is dominated by which agricultural area whose name is derived from the Gaelic for "the great valley"?

Answer: Strathmore

Strathmore is approximately 50 miles long and 10 miles wide and contains the towns of Forfar and Brechin.
9. The town of Forfar is famous for which type of meat pie?

Answer: Bridie

The Forfar bridie is similair in shape to a Cornish pasty, but is filled with minced beef and onions; a Cornish pasty contains potato and swede as well as meat.
10. Angus is sometimes known as the "Birthplace of Scotland" due to the signing of which famous document there in 1320?

Answer: Declaration of Arbroath

The Declaration of Arbroath took place at Arbroath Abbey in April, 1320. The document, signed by local nobles and barons, was sent to Pope John XXII, who initially agreed to their claims for Scottish independence from England. However, it wasn't until the signing of the Treaty of Edinburgh-Northampton in 1328 that the issue was finally settled.
