1. Probably the most famous son of Ayrshire is Scotland's national bard, Robert Burns. In which town or village was he born?

Answer: Alloway

Alloway is now a suburb of Ayr, but was a village in its own right when Burns was born there in 1759. The cottage where he was born is open to the public, along with the next-door museum.
2. The county of Ayrshire has been a regular venue for the British Open golf championship. Which is the only one of these Open courses that is NOT located in the county?

Answer: Muirfield

Muirfield is located at Gullane in East Lothian.
Prestwick hosted the first ever Open in 1860 and was the venue for the tournament a total of 24 times, the last occasion being 1925, since when the size of the crowds attending meant the course was no longer able to cope with the tournament. Royal Troon first hosted the event in 1923, and held it for the 8th time in 2004, when Todd Hamilton was victorious. Turnberry is one of the newer venues on the rota, first hosting the Open in 1977, when Tom Watson defeated Jack Nicklaus in the famous "duel in the sun".
3. The Ayrshire village of Dunlop is famous for what food product?

Answer: Cheese

Dunlop is a small village near Kilmarnock. Dunlop Cheese was first made by Barbara Gilmour in the 18th century, and is a mild cheese made from the unskimmed milk of Ayrshire cattle.
4. Which island, the largest town on which is Brodick, is part of Ayrshire?

Answer: Arran

Arran is the largest island in the Firth of Clyde. The port of Brodick can be reached by ferry from the Ayrshire town of Ardrossan.
5. Which "new town" was established in Ayrshire in 1966?

Answer: Irvine

The original town of Irvine had existed for centuries, before the Irvine Development Corporation was set up to develop it as a "new town". Major development in the area saw the town's population swell to around 40,000 by the early 21st century.
6. Which one of these universities has a campus in Ayr, Ayrshire's historic county town?

Answer: University of the West of Scotland

Established in 2007, the University of the West of Scotland has campuses in Ayr, Paisley, Hamilton and Dumfries. One of the leading courses at the Ayr campus is in Nursing and Midwifery.
7. The famous brand of Scotch Whisky, Johnnie Walker, originated in which Ayrshire town?

Answer: Kilmarnock

First distilled in 1820, Johnnie Walker sells more bottles worldwide than any other blended Scotch. It was distilled in Kilmarnock until 2012, when the company who owns the brand, Diageo, moved production to Leven in Fife.
8. Which famous scientist was born on a farm near the Ayrshire town of Darvel?

Answer: Sir Alexander Fleming

Fleming was born near Darvel in 1881. In 1928, he accidentally discovered penicillin. He was knighted by King George VI in 1944.
9. Which range of hills can be found in southern Ayrshire?

Answer: Galloway Hills

Part of the Southern Uplands, the Galloway Hills lie within the Galloway Forest Park, which was established in 1947. Within the park lies Loch Doon, which was dammed to form a reservoir in the 1930s.
10. Between 1975 and 1996, Ayrshire was absorbed into which much larger local government area?

Answer: Strathclyde

Strathclyde Regional Council covered a huge area ranging from Argyllshire in the north, to Ayrshire in the south, but was dominated economically and politically by Glasgow. It was abolished in 1996, with three new council areas governing the traditional county of Ayrshire - East, North and South Ayrshire.
