Highland is the northernmost mainland council area of Scotland, and the largest in the whole of the United Kingdom. It was formed in 1975 by amalgamating Caithness, Sutherland, the northern Inner Hebrides, mainland Inverness-shire, Nairnshire, mainland Ross and Cromarty as well as parts of Morayshire and Argyllshire.
Banffshire became part of the Grampian region in 1985.
2. The county town /administrative HQ of Highland is which city, nicknamed the "Capital of the Highlands"?

Answer: Inverness

Inverness is by far the largest settlement in Highland, and was given city status in 2000. The city stands on the banks of the River Ness, where it flows into the Moray Firth.
3. Which one of these mountains, the highest in the United Kingdom, can be found in Highland?

Answer: Ben Nevis

Ben Nevis is 4,411 feet high, and is located near Fort William in an area of Highland known as Lochaber. The Ben Nevis Race takes place each September, with up to 500 athletes racing to the mountain's summit.

Answer: Skiing

Aviemore is situated within Cairngorms National Park, and is a popular skiing and hillwalking centre. The opening of a chairlift on CairnGorm mountain in 1961 led to the town becoming one of the first ski resorts in Scotland.

Mull is much further south than the other options, and is part of Argyll and Bute. Skye, Raasay and Rum were all part of Inverness-shire prior to local government reorganisation in 1975. In 1995, Skye was connected to the mainland with the opening of the Skye Bridge, which connects Kyle of Lochalsh on the mainland with the island village of Kyleakin.

Answer: John o' Groats

John o' Groats is located in the far northeast of the former county of Caithness. Although sometimes mistakenly thought of as the northernmost point on the UK mainland, that accolade actually belongs to Dunnet Head, a few miles farther west.
Depending obviously on the route taken, the distance to Land's End is just under 900 miles.
7. The Highland Wildlife Park is located near the Highland town of Kingussie. Which one of the following animals would you be unlikely to see on a visit there?

Answer: African elephant

Highland Wildlife Park opened in 1972, ad has both a drive around area and a walk through section. Originally featuring animals native to the area, the park was later expanded to include animals from mountainous and tundra regions throughout the world.

Answer: Castle of Mey

The Castle of Mey was built in the 16th century in northern Caithness, and overlooks the Pentland Firth. The Queen Mother bought it in 1952 after the death of her husband, King George VI. She holidayed there every year in late July/early August until her death in 2002. The castle is open to the public in the summer months.
9. The neighbouring towns of Kingussie and Newtonmore are synonymous with which sport, played mainly in the Scottish highlands?

Answer: Shinty

Shinty is a sport similar to field hockey, played mainly in northern Scotland. The game's governing body, the Camanachd Association, is based in Inverness. Kingussie and Newtonmore have traditionally been two of the strongest teams in this sport.

Answer: Loch Ness Monster

Urquhart Castle sits on the shores of Loch Ness near the village of Drumnadrochit. Stories of the monster, normally referred to as "Nessie", have existed since the 6th century. A famous picture, known as the "surgeon's photo" was published in 1934, supposedly showing the creature's head and neck, but this was exposed as a hoax in 1999.
