Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Between 1975 and 1996, most of the historic county of Stirlingshire was absorbed into which larger region?

Answer: Central

Stirlingshire, with the exception of Kilsyth, was amalgamated with Clackmannanshire in 1975 to form Central Region. The old county reappeared on the map in its own right in 1996, although Kilsyth became part of North Lanarkshire, and the town of Falkirk became a county in its own right.
2. Which town, a few miles south of Stirling, is synonymous with a famous battle fought in 1314?

Answer: Bannockburn

Bannockburn is a commuter town just outside Stirling, and is known outside the immediate area for one thing, the Battle of Bannockburn. In 1314, armies of Robert Bruce of Scotland and Edward II of England engaged there, with the much smaller Scottish army prevailing.
3. On a hill called Abbey Craig, just outside Stirling, stands a monument to which Scottish hero?

Answer: William Wallace

Sir William Wallace was a leader during the Wars of Scottish Independence of the late 13th/early 14th centuries. His story is told, not particularly factually, in the 1995 Mel Gibson film "Braveheart". The monument to Wallace, a 220 feet high sandstone tower, was built in the 1860s.
4. Which small community in Stirlingshire has been home, since 1970, to a popular Safari Park?

Answer: Blair Drummond

Blair Drummond lies a few miles northwest of Stirling. The Safari Park, located in the grounds of Blair Drummond House, was opened in 1970, and includes drive-through sections featuring lions, zebras and rhinos amongst many other mammals, as well as sections devoted to lemurs and chimpanzees.
5. Which town in Stirlingshire is sometimes referred to as the "Gateway to the Trossachs"?

Answer: Callander

Callander lies on the banks of the River Tieth, around 15 miles northwest of Stirling. The Trossachs are an area of lochs and wooded glens which, in 2002, became part of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.
6. Which rather gruesome artifact can be found on Mote Hill in Stirling?

Answer: Beheading Stone

The Stirling Beheading Stone dates from the 15th century and was used for the execution of public figures. It is displayed on a plinth surrounded by iron bars.
7. Which is the only town in Stirlingshire to have its own cathedral?

Answer: Dunblane

Dunblane Cathedral dates from the 11th century and is a Church of Scotland place of worship. The town itself is a commuter town standing on the banks of Allen Water.
8. Which major Scottish river rises near the village of Aberfoyle and flows through the city of Stirling?

Answer: Forth

The River Forth becomes an estuary, the Firth of Forth, a few miles east of Stirling. Stirling itself had a harbour on the river until the 17th century when it fell into disuse.
9. The most southerly of the "Munros", what mountain is the highest point in Stirlingshire?

Answer: Ben Lomond

A "Munro" is a mountain in Scotland with an elevation over 3,000 feet. Ben Lomond is the most southerly of these and lies on the shoreline of Loch Lomond.
10. Which of the following facts about Stirling Castle is *false*?

Answer: Mary Queen of Scots was executed there in 1587

Stirling Castle has existed since the 12th century although most of the present buildings there were built in the 15th century. It is open to the public and is managed by Historic Environment Scotland. Its similarity in appearance to the castle in Germany led to it being used for exterior shots in the TV series "Colditz". Bob Dylan is among the music artists to have performed on the castle esplanade.

The Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders have their official base and regiment museum in the castle although soldiers now live and train near Edinburgh. Mary Queen of Scots was crowned in Stirling Castle, but was executed at Fotheringhay castle in England.
