Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When I RIP a LOT of cloth the sea seems very close.

Answer: Tripoli

Libya's capital, Tripoli, should not be confused with cities of the same name in Lebanon and Greece. This version sits on the shore of the Mediterranean, in the north of Libya, with the desert stretching off to the south.
2. HIKE DOWN through the highlands, to reach this place with a colonial name.

Answer: Windhoek

Namibia, of which Windhoek is the capital, was at one time known as German Southwest Africa, then (after WWI) became Southwest Africa, a dependency of South Africa. After a long and bitter campaign, Namibia gained its independence in 1990. Set in the central highlands, Windhoek is almost in the centre of the country, equidistant from the Atlantic coast to the west and the border with Botswana to the east.
3. If he's A BRAT don't let him go on the camel ride.

Answer: Rabat

Although other cities may be better known, and even have films named for them, it is Rabat that is capital of Morocco. Rabat is located on the country's Atlantic coast, while the country is situated on Africa's northwestern tip, bordering Algeria and Western Sahara, as well as the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, and the Spanish autonomous regions, Ceuta and Melilla. Camel rides are mentioned in the sentence as a clue, as they are one of the activities open to visitors to Rabat.
4. Does the media have A BAD AD BIAS about this city near the Great Rift Valley?

Answer: Addis Ababa

Ethiopia's capital city, Addis Ababa, is in the country's central highlands, which themselves border Africa's Great Rift Valley. The city is home to a number of museums and features architecture from colonial to art deco to modern. Located in the Horn of Africa, Ethiopia has been landlocked since the independence of Eritrea in the early 1990s took away its coastline on the Red Sea.
5. You will search in VAIN on the MOOR or heath for this city named for someone else's president.

Answer: Monrovia

Liberia was founded under a project that believed freed slaves would stand a better chance of a good life in Africa than in the USA; beginning in the 1820s freedmen and free-born black people established themselves in this region of western Africa, declaring independence in 1847.

Their flag was modelled after the Stars and Stripes, and their capital named after fifth US president (and supporter of the project) James Monroe. Monrovia is located on the Atlantic coast of the country.
6. Don't feed that YAK any CORN. It shouldn't even be this close to the Atlantic!

Answer: Conakry

Conakry, the capital of (the Republic of) Guinea, sits on a peninsula extending into the Atlantic Ocean. It is a port city, with some lovely beaches on nearby islands. A mineral-rich country, this Guinea is one of three African countries with "Guinea" in their name, all having been carved from the Guinea region of the continent by the various colonial powers.
7. Allied UNITS entered this North African city in May 1943, having caused the Germans to depart.

Answer: Tunis

Tunisia is Africa's most northerly country, bordering Algeria, Libya and the Mediterranean Sea. During World War II, Tunis was the last major African city occupied by German forces before they pulled out and the British and U.S. troops moved in. Attractions for modern day visitors to the city include Roman mosaics, the ruins of Carthage and the Medina of Tunis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.
8. It is said that many A CON WEPT when forced to leave this city below Table Mountain.

Answer: Cape Town

Cape Town is one of three capital cities in South Africa and lies in Western Cape province in the shadow of Table Mountain. It is a port city on the Atlantic bay known as Table Bay. The notorious prison known as Robben Island, reached by boat from the city, has become a living museum in later years.
9. Did you not say that you ATE PRIOR to starting our trek to this executive capital?

Answer: Pretoria

Pretoria is another of South Africa's three capital cities, and is the one where all of the foreign embassies are located. Cape Town is the legislative capital, and Bloemfontein the judicial capital. The use of the word "trek" was meant as a hint that we are still in South Africa and also that Pretoria is the site of the Voortrekker Monument to Afrikaans settlers of the region.
10. If your FEET hurt after the short walk from Susan's Bay to the Cotton Tree, you must have WORN the wrong shoes.

Answer: Freetown

Sierra Leone, in West Africa, is bordered by Liberia, Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean. The capital, Freetown, is a port, situated in part on Susan's Bay, which is an eight minute walk from the historical monument called the Cotton Tree. Legend has it that under this tree a group of former slaves, having won their freedom by fighting for the British against the rebellious Americans, held a service of thanksgiving, and declared the place "Free Town" in 1792.
