Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If I was in the world's first Garden City, able to view the first example of a roundabout in this country and also see an abundance of relatively rare black squirrels, just where on Earth would I be?

Answer: Letchworth, England

To give it its proper and official title, Letchworth Garden City, would really have given the game away!

Founded in 1905 based on the principles of Social reformer Ebenezer Howard, Letchworth was designed to incorporate the benefits of town and country living. The roundabout, built in 1909, was the first of its kind on a public road, and can still be seen today. It was originally named Sollershott Circus.

Black squirrels, although not uncommon on other continents, are fairly rare and concentrated mainly around the Letchworth/Hitchin/Stevenage area of England, though they are spreading fast due to the dominant gene of the black versus grey squirrel.

All the other options are also Garden Cities, based on the layout and planning of Letchworth.

Just in case you haven't guessed...it is also my very own home town! (chears58)
2. Not located below ground after all, but actually in a U.S. state surrounded by water. Where on Earth is Hell?

Answer: Michigan

Hell, Michigan, formerly known as Hiland, is a small unincorporated area in Livingston County. The community is located between Pinckney and Ann Arbor. There is also a town in the state called Paradise.

The U.S. also has a Hell, California and a Hell for Certain, Kentucky.

3. If you're "of a certain age", you remember hearing Burl Ives singing "Big Rock Candy Mountain". If you're a bit younger, you heard Harry McClintock sing it on the sound track of "O Brother, Where Art Thou?". Bet you didn't know it really exists! Where on Earth is the Big Rock Candy Mountain?

Answer: Adjacent to Marysvale, UT

Harry McClintock actually wrote the song, releasing it in 1928. It was added to the sound track of the 2000 movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" as the penultimate piece of music about being on the down side of life, as prisoners or hobos.

Shortly after the song was initially released, a group of jokesters in Marysvale, UT decided a nearby geologic feature certainly fulfilled the image, so they posted a sign at the base of a multicolored lava remnant. In the geologic past the area had been home to a cluster of stratovolcanoes (same type as Mt. St. Helens), which erupted, leaving rocks measured at 3,000 feet thick. Sometime after these eruptions, several magma intrusions pushed through the lava rocks, each intrusion being a particular mineral magma body. As time went by, erosion broke down the layers of lava rock over the intrusions, leaving the colorful minerals visible.

The colors range from red through orange to yellow, iron minerals including jarosite, hematite and pyrite. There is also white, from potassium-rich minerals alunite and kaolinite.

Although the area doesn't include the cigarette trees or the soda water fountain (the jokers had put up a sign near one of the area's water features as "Lemonade Springs"), nevertheless the name stuck. There is now a resort, and the Candy Mountain Express Bike Trail follows a former rail right of way along Hwy 89 from south of Richfield to the foot of the Big Rock Candy Mountain. (babsr)
4. Let's go back to Hell again, or rather The Door to Hell. What country would you have to visit to view it, even if you prefer not to enter...yet?

Answer: Turkmenistan

Derweze, Turkmenistan is our destination. Originally a natural gas field, it was identified by Russian engineers as a possible oil field site. However, after crews set up drilling rigs, the site subsequently collapsed into an underground cavern and became a natural gas crater. Fearing the escape of dangerous methane gas, they attempted to burn it off. Bad idea really! This happened in 1971 and still burns to this day.

Named The Door to Hell/Gate to Hell/Crater of Fire by locals, it is 69m in diameter and 30m deep. (chears58)
5. I'm in the port town of Qeqertarsuaq. Where on Earth am I?

Answer: Greenland

I'm on an island off the west coast of Greenland, in the municipality of Qaasuitsup. The name means "the great island" in Eskimo-Aleut, although the Danish name for the island is Disko, due to its shape. Qeqertarsuaq is pretty much the only town on the island, although there is a small village called Kangersluk sharing the island.

The town is popular with tourists, offering everything from hiking to dog sledding. The University of Copenhagen has its Arctic Research Station there as well. (babsr)
6. I'm standing on a beach with a great view of a 20 meter tall islet. Its claim to fame is that it was home to the villain in the 007 film, "The Man With The Golden Gun". Matter of fact, the islet is now known as "James Bond Island". Off which country is this islet?

Answer: Thailand

The islet, Ko Tapu ("Nail Island"), and its neighboring island Ko Phing Khan are off the Thai mainland in Phang Nga Bay. Because of the popularity of the movie, the area has become a prime destination. The islet is not equipped for tourists, as it and Ko Phing Khan are primarily composed of limestone, and due to plate tectonics and the erosion of the islands by water, the islands are deteriorating. Ko Phing Khan is actually a single island with a beach between the two towers. Ko Tapu is most easily seen from this beach. (babsr)
7. I'm visiting a beautiful village with an underground cave complex. The houses are faced with local flint and stone quarried from said caves. The flint and stone have been used to build many cathedrals in my country of origin. What's the name of the village?

Answer: Beer

Beer, on the Jurassic coast in Devon, England is our location.

It is not named after the alcoholic drink but rather from "bearu", an Anglo- Saxon word for grove.

Beer stone is prized for its ease of carving and has been used for many famed Cathedrals in the UK, including Exeter and St. Paul's. (chears58)
8. Formerly known as Mauch Chunk, there is a borough somewhere in the United States named for legendary sports hero Jim Thorpe. Where on Earth is it?

Answer: Pennsylvania

A borough is a town or incorporated area.

Jim Thorpe was born in Prague, Oklahoma in 1887 and died in Lomita, California in 1953. He never had any ties to Pennsylvania before the borough known as Mauch Chunk purchased his body and changed its name.

He was a sports legend, playing professional football from 1915 to 1928, and also coaching in the pros and college during that same time. He was elected to the college and pro football halls of fame.

Thorpe was also the Olympic champion in the Decathlon and the Pentathlon in 1912. He played professional baseball from 1909 through 1922, including several stops in the major leagues. He was signed by the World Famous Indians travelling basketball team for the 1927 and 1928 teams as well.

After his death, Thorpe's third wife, Patricia Askew, "stole" the body from the family and sold his remains to Mauch Chunk and East Mauch Chunk. The two towns merged and renamed themselves Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania.

The borough erected a monument to Thorpe to immortalize him.

He never visited that area during his lifetime. (Shadowmyst2004)
9. The Aldabra banded snail, with beautiful elongate deep purple shells lined with bright pink bands, was declared extinct in 2007 but was re-discovered in 2014, alive and well, on an atoll in this island group.

Answer: Seychelles

The last individual Aldabra snails (Rhachistia aldabrae) were recorded in 1997 on Malabar, the Middle Island of the Aldabra atoll in the Outer Islands of the Seychelles. Later searches found only shell remains and the snail was declared extinct in 2007.

The snails were spotted once again in August 2014 on one of Aldabra's endemic trees in a little visited part of the island. Further discovery of young snails was encouraging since juveniles have a harder time staying undesiccated, especially with the reduced rainfall on the island.

This same atoll is also home to the largest population of the world's giant tortoises. The Aldabra atoll was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 and is managed and protected by the Seychelles Island Foundation. (lacybear)
10. Ojos del Salado is the highest active volcano in the world at 22,615 feet. Located in the Andes mountain range, borders of which two South American countries run between its two summits?

Answer: Chile and Argentina

The last eruption of Ojos del Salado was recorded in 1300 but there had been some ash emission in 1993, qualifying it as an active volcano. In Spanish, Ojos del Salado means "Eyes of the Salty One", referring to the lagoons that appear in the volcano's glaciers. The difference in elevation of each summit is barely three feet, with the borders cutting through a short saddle between them. (lacybear)
