1. What is the name of the mountain range that lies along the border of north western Switzerland and France?

Answer: Jura Mountains

The Jura Mountains are a sub-Alpine range which extend into France and Switzerland. The highest point in the range is Cret de la Niege, in the Ain department of France, which has an elevation of 1720 metres. The Jurassic geological period takes its name from these mountains.

Answer: Quimper

Quimper is a town on the Odet River in western Brittany. The capital of Finisterre department, it is home to a 13th century cathedral, and produces its own tin-glazed pottery, called Quimper faience.
3. Which one of these cities is the fourth-largest in its country, and features a canal called the Oudegracht?

Answer: Utrecht

Utrecht is the capital of a province of the same name in the Netherlands. Regarded as the religious centre of the country, the city is a major cultural and educational centre. The Oudegracht (Old canal) runs through the centre of the city, and former warehouses along its banks are now being turned into restaurants and cafes.
4. Which city gave its name to a Republic which existed in Germany between 1918 and 1933?

Answer: Weimar

Weimar is a city in the state of Thuringia, and is located in the valley of the Ilm River, between the Harz Mountains and the Thuringian forest. In 1918, following the end of World War I, Germany's first democratic constitution was signed there, giving rise to the Weimar Republic, which existed until Hitler's Nazis came to power in 1933.
5. The Vistula River, one of the longest in Europe, flows through which one of these cities?

Answer: Warsaw

The Vistula (also known as the Wisla) rises on a southern Polish mountain, Barania Gora, and flows in a generally northwards direction for 651 miles into the Baltic Sea. The biggest city it flows though is Poland's capital city, Warsaw. The city was known as the "Paris of the North" before World War 2, when it was razed to the ground.

In the second half of the 20th century, many of the city's historical buildings were rebuilt in their original style.

Answer: Xanthi

Xanthi is a city in north east Greece, in the region of East Macedonia and Thrace. Situated on the banks of the Kosynthos River, it is best known for its Spring Carnival, held every February.
7. Which city of the former Soviet Union is famous for a 1945 conference to discuss the future of post-war Germany?

Answer: Yalta

Yalta is a city on the Crimean Peninsula in southern Ukraine. Its location on the Black Sea coast makes it a popular tourist destination. In February, 1945, Winston Churchill, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Joseph Stalin met there to discuss the future of Germany after World War 2 was finished.
8. What is the name of the highest mountain in Germany?

Answer: Zugspitze

Zugspitze, with a height of nearly 3,000 metres, is located in the Wetterstein Mountains in the eastern Alps, and is split between the German state of Bavaria and the Austrian state of Tyrol. It is not, however the highest mountain in Austria, that honour belonging to Grossglockner.
9. Which one of these cities of the former Yugoslavia is situated on the banks of the Sava River?

Answer: Zagreb

The Sava River is nearly 1,000 km long, and flows through Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia, joining the Danube in Belgrade. Zagreb, the capital city of Croatia, lies on its banks, and is a major tourist, cultural, educational as well as governmental centre.
10. Which city, on the banks of the Limmat River, is a famous banking centre, and is by far the largest in its country in the early 21st century?

Answer: Zurich

Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland and took turns with a number of other cities to act as capital of the country until Bern became the permanent seat of government in 1848. The city is one of the world's leading financial centres, with the Swiss stock exchange situated there, along with the headquarters of numerous banks.
