Just north of Tweed Heads in New South Wales is the beachside town of Kingscliff. With white, sandy beaches and good surf, you can surf, kayak or snorkel the reef. Swimming with the turtles is also a popular activity. On land there are excellent cycling tracks, nearby Tropical Fruit World, regular markets and enough cafes and restaurants to satisfy everyone.

Cooktown is found north of Cairns on the Cape York Peninsula. It was originally named Cooks Town because this was where Captain James Cook beached the Endeavour to undertake repairs. The name was later shortened to Cooktown.

The aboriginal word for the area is Gangaar, which means 'Place of the Rock Crystals'. The quartz found in the area was used in traditional ceremonies across Australia.

As with many towns in the region, after the gold rush of the late 19th century was over, Cooktown reinvented itself as a tourist area.
