Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. There are at least six river Avons in the UK and quite a few worldwide. But what does 'Avon' mean?

Answer: River

Legend has it that when the Romans asked for the name of the local river, the natives would simply say "Avon" (meaning "river"). At that time, most waterways had no specific name. So, the River Avon technically means "river river".
2. What is the longest river in the UK?

Answer: Severn

The Severn is 220 miles (354 Km) long. It also has one of the widest mouths of any river in the UK, entering the sea from the Bristol Channel.
3. The following are all historical sites in the UK, but one is the 'odd man out' in terms of structure. Which one is it?

Answer: Sutton Hoo

Sutton Hoo is a burial site, while the other three are all stone rings (or 'henges'). Stonehenge is part of a complex of monuments on Salisbury Plain, which includes a woodhenge to the northeast. Stanton Drew has one to the west, not far from Bristol. Avebury has many rings of stones and is the largest in the UK.
4. In the area of Cornwall, Devon and Somerset, there are three moors. Two are Dartmoor and Exmoor, but what is the third one called?

Answer: Bodmin Moor

Bodmin is the smallest of these moors in the area, but this does not detract from its stunning landscape. It is famous for its granite rocks.
5. One of the words below refers to 'river' or 'stream' in Scotland. Which one?

Answer: Burn

In Scotland, the term 'burn' is used for small rivers, streams, or creeks. Some southerners use the word 'totty' for a good-looking girl. 'Chav' means 'child' to many northerners (though it does have other meanings). A 'dork', of course, is someone who is stupid or slow on the up take (and is probably a term imported from the USA).
6. If you want to see Longleat, Stourhead gardens, and Stonehenge, which county would be the best to visit?

Answer: Wiltshire

Longleat is a safari park in Wiltshire. Stourhead is a historic landscaped garden. Stonehenge lies just a few miles north of Salisbury, and is part of a large Stone Age site.
7. The UK has many real heroes of old, but the odd legend can creep in. Who's the folklore hero in this bunch?

Answer: Robin Hood

There is no decisive record of a real Robin Hood, though many theories exist. It is also believed that the term 'Robin Hood' (or its equivalent name form) was a basic term used for any outlaw.

William Wallace (1272-1305) and Rob Roy MacGregor (1671-1734) were both Scottish rebels/freedom fighters who opposed the English. Rob Roy is sometimes called 'The Scottish Robin Hood'. Dick Whittington (c. 1354-1423) was Lord Mayor of London four times and did a lot to help the poor. He also appeared as a character in the play "Dick Whittington and His Cat" (1605).
8. Where in the UK is Offa's Dyke?

Answer: English/Welsh border

King Offa (d. 796) possibly built the dike simply to keep the neighbours out, rather than as a defensive fortress. The earthwork was originally over 120 miles long.
9. If you are into rock climbing, there are a few peaks you might like to try. What is the highest mountain you can climb in the UK?

Answer: Ben Nevis

Ben Nevis is located in Scotland. Ben Macdui is the second highest mountain in Scotland. Snowdon is the highest in Wales. Lastly, Scafell Pike is England's tallest mountain.
10. London is the modern capital of England, but what was the ancient capital city of England?

Answer: Winchester

Winchester was an important city in ancient England, and King Egbert made it his capital in 827 AD. King Alfred made many changes to the city. Some of the medieval town structure has remained in the modern city.
