Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Isle of Wight is a large island off the south coast of England. Which body of water separates it from the mainland?

Answer: The Solent

Originally the area now known as the Solent was a river valley. The present Solent was created from a long and gradual process which both widened and deepened the water beds over a period of many thousands of years. The River Frome was the prime source of the River Solent and two other rivers called the Itchen and the Test were tributaries.
2. The phrase 'Dogger Bank' is beloved of regular late night Radio Four listeners many of whom are lulled to sleep by the shipping Weather reports. But Dogger Bank is located mainly off the coast of which English county?

Answer: Yorkshire

Dogger Bank is an extensive off shore shoal found in the North Sea. It is situated about 60 miles off the northeastern coast of England. Dogger Bank is about 70 feet higher than the surrounding sea floor. This geological feature is about 160 miles long and 60 miles wide at the 120-foot level. The bank is a huge moraine that was left after last ice age.
3. Even in these troubled times the unwary visitor to London is taken aback by the level of security which now surrounds the United States embassy. In which London district can the embassy be found?

Answer: Nine Elms

Until 2017, the embassy was in Grosvenor Square, which was laid out at about the same time as the other generally former aristocratic areas around Mayfair. It was planned in 1720 and was built between about 1725 and 1731. It was second only in size to the Lincoln's Inn Fields development.
4. The home of many a violent exchange of views between Scots and English over the centuries, as they resolved border disputes and contested ownership of cattle; which range of hills lie along the English-Scottish border?

Answer: Cheviots

The Cheviot Hills were formed as part of volcanic activity. The hills have a distinctive pink rock which derives from cooled lava. The Cheviots form part of the natural border between Scotland and England.
5. One of my must see places. On which Scottish island is the town of Tobermory?

Answer: Mull

The Isle of Mull (Muile in Scottish Gaelic) is the one of the group of islands known as the Inner Hebrides. It is the second largest of that group and incidentally the fourth largest island off the coast of the British Isles.
6. One of the largest bodies of inland water in the British Isles: Which lake is surrounded by the Antrim, Mourne and Sperrin hill ranges of Ulster?

Answer: Lough Neagh

Lough Neagh is situated in the heart of Northern Ireland. Several of that region's counties touch its shores. Lough Neagh is the biggest freshwater lake in the British Isles and the third biggest lake in Europe.
7. Amongst other claims to fame this coastal town has the largest camera obscura in the United Kingdom, and it houses the National Library of Wales. So what is this place?

Answer: Aberystwyth

My alma mater. Aberystwyth is the home town of one of the oldest universities in Wales. To the north the seaside town is protected by a massive lump of rock known as Constitution Hill atop of which proudly sits the Victorian built camera obscura. This device operates by use of natural light without any power source and projects images of the town and near countryside and seascapes on to a table sized disc for all to sea. Oh, and don't worry about getting up and down Constitution Hill as the Victorians also built a now rare funicular railway/tram to transport you safely.
8. In which northern city is the Whitworth Art Gallery located?

Answer: Manchester

The Whitworth Art Gallery is part of the University of Manchester. The museum is one of the UK's leading museums with an international reputation for its collections of art and design including modern and historic fine art, prints, textiles and a rare collection of wallpapers.
9. The lovely land of Wales (are my roots showing?) spawns two of the longest rivers in the British Isles, the Severn and the Wye; but what is the longest river wholly in Wales?

Answer: Towy

The Towy flows some 70 miles from its headwaters in the Cambrian Mountains. The Welsh word for Towy is Tywi, but it is pronounced in much the same way as in English version.
10. What geographical feature projects into the north side of the mouth of the River Humber?

Answer: Spurn Head

Spurn Point is sometimes described as one of the seven wonders of the British Isles. It is a marvelous feature of the British coastline and stretches for three and a half miles across the Humber Estuary. It is only 50 metres wide in places, making it look like an elongated tongue.
