Hereford is the traditional county town of Herefordshire. It is the host, every third year, of the Three Choirs Festival, alternating as host with Gloucester and Worcester.

2. Which southern port is synonymous with a famous battle of 1066?

Answer: Hastings

The Battle of Hastings actually took place near the town of Battle, some six miles north of Hastings. The Sussex town is one of the traditional Cinque Ports, alongside Hythe, Dover, New Romney and Sandwich.

3. Which town on the River Teviot is the largest in the former Scottish county of Roxburghshire?

Answer: Hawick

Hawick is famous for its Rugby Union team ("The Greens"), and the annual Common Riding festival which commemorates a victory over English raiders in 1514.

Answer: Huntingdon

Cromwell was born in Huntingdon in 1599, and represented the town in Parliament from 1628-29. Major was MP for Huntingdon from 1979-2001. Huntingdon was the county town of the former county of Huntingdonshire; nowadays it is part of Cambridgeshire.

Answer: Henley-upon-Thames

The rowing regatta has been held on the Thames at Henley since 1839, and is one of the highlights of the social calendar.

The Halifax Building Society was the largest of its kind in the United Kingdom, before becoming a bank and merging with the Bank of Scotland in 2001. The name Halifax comes from the Old English words for Holy and Face; the head of John the Baptist is rumoured to be buried in the town.

East Lothian was called Haddingtonshire until 1921. The town of Haddington was the first Royal burgh in Scotland, and was burned by English forces three times in the 13th/14th centuries.
