Answer: Leicester

Leicester is the traditional county town of Leicestershire. The best-known landmark in the city is the Clock Tower, constructed in 1868 as a centre-piece for a traffic island; it contains statues of four famous townsmen - Simon De Montfort, William Wyggeston, Thomas White and Gabriel Newton.

Answer: Lerwick

Lerwick is the northernmost town in Great Britain. Situated on the east coast of the Shetland Mainland, the town is a traditional fishing and ferry port.

Liverpool was the birthplace of all four of The Beatles. Situated on the Mersey Estuary, the city was one of the major ports of the British Empire in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Answer: Lyme Regis

Lyme Regis lies on Lyme Bay in Dorset. The suffix "Regis" was acquired in the 13th century when King Edward I used its harbour as a base for his wars against the French.

Answer: Llandudno

Llandudno acquired its nickname in 1864. The town lies on Llandudno Bay between the headlands of Great Orme and Little Orme.

The present Lichfield Cathedral was begun in 1195 and completed in the early 14th century. The town was a separate county from 1553 until 1888 when it became part of Staffordshire.

Answer: Leeds

Leeds is the largest city in Yorkshire; the city grew rapidly during the industrial revolution of the 18th/19th centuries, aided by the opening of the Leeds and Liverppol Canal in 1816.
8. Which Scottish town's most recognised landmark is its 15th century Palace, birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots?

Answer: Linlithgow

Linlithgow is the former county town of West Lothian, also known as Linlithgowshire. The Palace was badly damaged by a fire started by the Duke of Cumberland's army in 1746, but has been conserved by Historic Scotland.
9. Which cathedral city and county town on the banks of the River Witham was known by the Romans as Lindum Colonia?

Answer: Lincoln

Lindum Colonia lay at the northern end of the Roman road known as Fosse Way (Exeter in Devon lay at the southern end). The modern city of Lincoln is the county town of Lincolnshire, and is dominated by its Norman cathedral which can be seen from up to 20 miles away.
