Answer: Lewes

The other places are bigger, but Lewes is the location for the major bonfire celebrations on November 5th. It is also famous for the Battle of Lewes in 1264.
2. Which pair of "ancient towns" in East Sussex are near the Kent border?

Answer: Rye and Winchelsea

Rye and Winchelsea were important ports in mediaeval times. In the Cinque Ports confederation (a predecessor of the Royal Navy along the Kent/Sussex coast), they were promoted from being mere "Limbs" of Hastings to being "Ancient Towns" in their own right.
3. Beachy Head and Birling Gap are just outside which major East Sussex town?

Answer: Eastbourne

Beachy Head is just to the west of Eastbourne, with Birling Gap slightly further west. The chalk cliffs along this part of the coastline are gradually being eroded. The nearby Belle Tout lighthouse was moved a short distance inland to avoid/delay it falling into the sea.
4. The first building purchased by the National Trust was the "Clergy House" in which East Sussex village?

Answer: Alfriston

The National Trust was founded in 1895. The following year, it purchased its first building - the Clergy House in Alfriston - for ten pounds.
5. Which town near Tunbridge Wells has strong links with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle?

6. Which "old" town lies buried under the sea a few miles east of Hastings?

Answer: Old Winchelsea

The original town of Winchelsea disappeared into the sea after prolonged erosion and violent storms during the thirteenth century. "New" Winchelsea was built on a hill nearby while "Old" Winchelsea lies just offshore ... somewhere ...
7. Which inventor associated with television lived in the Hastings and Bexhill area during the first half of the twentieth century?

Answer: John Logie Baird

8. Senlac Hill (probably) played a major part in which historical event?

Answer: The Battle of Hastings

9. Wealden and Rother are best known as types of what?

Answer: Local government areas

Wealden and Rother are two of the five local government districts of the non-metropolitan county of East Sussex, along with Lewes, Eastbourne and Hastings. Brighton and Hove is a self-administered unitary authority (and a city) but remains part of the ceremonial county of East Sussex.
10. What happened to Hastings pier in 2010 and Eastbourne pier in 2014?

Answer: Suffered a serious fire

Hastings Pier was built in 1872. It suffered storm damage at various times and was closed when much of the structure was destroyed by fire in October 2010. Eastbourne Pier dates from the 1870s.
