Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Yushan makes which of these islands the fourth-highest in the world due to its height, 3,952m above sea level?

Answer: Taiwan

Also known as Mount Jade, Yushan sits on two tectonic plates and while it's not a volcano, it's a direct result of the same sort of geological shifts that have caused some of the worst eruptions in the same part of the world. First ascended at the end of the nineteenth century, Yushan is actually in a fairly hard-to-reach spot in the island's least-reachable National Park.

It is, however, a famous peak for mountain climbers on the island; all five of its peaks have been ascended frequently. Taipei, on the north end of the island, is nearly two hundred kilometres away.
2. What is the name of this ninth century Buddhist Temple complex found in Magelang, Indonesia?

Answer: Borobudur

Found on the island of Java, the Buddhist temple of Borobudur is the world's largest, built during the Shailendra Dynasty. Now preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the structure was constructed with thousands of statues and reliefs, most depicting Buddha.

A pilgrimage site for many Buddhists traveling to Indonesia for religious reasons, the temple system, outside the city of Yogyakarta, features three clusters of sacred temples and surrounding archaeological parks. After all, these buildings are over a thousand years old.
3. Koh Panyi Village is situated in Ao Phang Nga National Park, a region in Southern Thailand sitting on what body of water?

Answer: Andaman Sea

Koh Panyi is unique because it was built hundreds of years ago amongst the karst islands in Southern Thailand for local fishermen; because of its location, it seems to float, on stilts, in the waters of Phang Nga Bay. Ao Phang Nga, a protected mangrove forest and coastal region, found a great amount of popularity as a sightseeing destination in the 2000s and 2010s and as a result has faced increasing difficulties, especially in maintaining underwater ecosystems. Koh Panyi and Ao Phang Nga are slightly north of Phuket.
4. Which of these African capital cities is named after the river it rests upon?

Answer: Lilongwe

The city of Lilongwe, Malawi grew from modest roots as a fishing village into a larger British trading post, eventually becoming the nation's capital in 1975, eleven years after gaining independence from the British. Malawi is a relatively narrow country, so while the city of Lilongwe is in the center, it's also very close to the adjacent nations of Mozambique to the east and Zambia to the west. Malawi is typically considered a government city, and considering the nation's population, it's surprising that so few live there. Because of a reliance on agriculture, most live in rural sections of the country.
5. It's also known as Nyasa and Niassa; what African body of water is the ninth-largest lake in the world?

Answer: Lake Malawi

Also the third-largest lake in Africa (after Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika), Lake Malawi covers a large amount of the northeast corner of Malawi, spilling into Mozambique and Tanzania as well. Because of Malawi's tendency to support more rural citizens, it's unsurprising that many use the lake as a lifeline.

It certainly helps that Lake Malawi is home to hundreds of different species of fish, and since it's also one of the deepest lakes on the continent, it serves as a great boon to the local economy.
6. The baroque Church of Our Saviour, depicted, has a unique helix rooftop staircase that overlooks what European city?

Answer: Copenhagen, Denmark

Also known as Vor Frelsers Kirke, the Church of Our Saviour stands 90m tall and was built over the course of sixty years in the late 17th and the 18th centuries. The unique building is one of the most distinct structures in Denmark's capital, and from its spiral staircase, winding its way up the outside of the building's spire, you can see in all directions including out towards Copenhagen Harbour, one of the largest ports in the Baltic Sea, used since the Middle Ages.
7. What unique theme park, depicted, opened in the town of Billund in 1968?

Answer: LEGOLAND

Found in the same town as its international headquarters in Denmark, the LEGOLAND theme park is home to all things LEGO. Visitors can, of course, build their theme park experience and hop onto countless brick-themed rides and attractions themed around a number of different LEGO lines (including pirates, knights, Vikings, etc.).

Its popularity led to the opening of several LEGOLAND parks around the world including those in Germany, Japan, the UK, the U.S., Malaysia, and the United Arab Emirates.
8. Brussels, Belgium is considered by many the de facto capital of which of these?

Answer: The European Union

While there is no official EU capital, Brussels is the home of the European Union headquarters (including the European Council). European Parliament can be found at Espace Léopold. That said, there are also many European Union buildings found in the city of Strasbourg, France and in Luxembourg, and all three have staked some claim in being European capitals due to their split importance. Brussels, at the same time, is the capital city of Belgium.
9. The UNESCO World Heritage Site depicted contains the cathedral and former capital of what Central American nation?

Answer: Panama

Panama Viejo contains many of the oldest ruins in the city, built as early as the sixteenth century; it was one of the first Pacific settlements to be formed by any European civilization. Now, the archaeological sites found there are a major tourist attraction, found at the edge of the city. Depicted is the Old Panama Cathedral, a building that has been spared, as it would seem, by years of pirate attacks on the city and the tests of time.
10. What U.S. Olympic city is known for Hartsfield-Jackson, considered for decades to be the world's busiest airport?

Answer: Atlanta

The capital of the state of Georgia, Atlanta hosted the Summer Olympics in 1996. Because of its position as one of the largest transportation hubs on the Atlantic Coast, it's become the home for numerous multi-national corporations (including Coca-Cola and UPS) and it's a major city for news and entertainment, being the home of CNN. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, named after a former mayor, became the world's busiest airport in 1998 due to its shipping uses and its heavy passenger intake which, in 2015, surpassed one hundred million travelers.
