Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Found in Teotihuacan, Mexico, what structure (depicted) is one of the largest in Mesoamerica?

Answer: Pyramid of the Sun

Pyramid of the Sun, found on the Avenue of the Dead, was one of the tallest ancient structures in all of the Western Hemisphere upon its construction nearly two thousand years ago. Standing at seventy-five meters high, it remains one of the tallest pyramids around the globe. Taller still than the nearby Pyramid of the Moon, the site's history is quite ambiguous with scholars still unsure as to the deity of worship the temple was built to honour. Nonetheless, the building, upon investigation by several archaeological groups, has yielded unique artifacts.

The site is less than an hour's drive from Mexico City.
2. Found fifty miles north of London, the city of Cambridge is situated on what calm river?

Answer: Cam

The River Cam, only forty miles from the eastern coast of Britain, cuts through the city of Cambridge and passes in front of the city's famous university. Surprisingly calm and well-cared-for, the river is mainly used for leisure-- many of its edges are lined with punts, small boats which can be steered from the back like a Venetian gondola. Cambridge is home to one of the world's most famous and reputable universities and is the home of Midsummer and Strawberry Fairs, the former of which has been around since the thirteenth century.
3. Cabo da Roca is the westernmost point of Continental Europe. To what country would you travel to visit it?

Answer: Portugal

Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Cabo da Roca is less than thirty kilometers from the Portuguese capital city, Lisbon. Part of Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, Cabo da Roca consists of a series of rocky cliffs atop sandy coastal beaches. Sitting a hundred feet above the surf, the site is well-protected.

The nearby city of Sintra is likewise protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site; it used to be the home of Portuguese royalty.
4. The Palmeraie is an oasis of palm, date, and fig trees. It can be found outside which of these West African cities?

Answer: Marrakech, Morocco

An oasis in every sense of the word, the Palmerie is a lush expanse of land situated on the western edge of the Sahara Desert. One of the more expensive parts of Marrakech, one of Morocco's largest cities, the Palmerie contains a large amount of luxury hotels.

The rest of the city is a major tourist hub sitting in the center of the country. The medina in the middle of the city, Jemaa el-Fnaa, is a UNESCO Heritage Site, while the rest of Marrakech is dotted with souks, museums, and mosques.
5. Twice the home of the Winter Olympic Games, which of the following cities is in Austria?

Answer: Innsbruck

Innsbruck, part of Tyrol in Western Austria, hosted the Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976. As such, this Alpine city is home to many sporting venues and charming monuments, many of which see tourism year-round. Many buildings in Innsbruck were built hundreds of years ago, and Renaissance architecture blends with modern styles and conveniences in front of a mountainous, snow-capped backdrop year-round. Ambras Castle, for instance, was once the home of Ferdinand II.

The city is also home to the Imperial Palace, The Hofburg.
6. The Jet D'eau, one of the world's largest fountains, can be found on the Rhone River in which European nation?

Answer: Switzerland

The Jet D'Eau can be found in the beautiful city of Geneva, rising to a maximum height of one hundred forty meters above the Rhone River. This makes it one of the tallest fountains in all of Europe, and certainly one of the most powerful single jets of water (shooting upward).

Although the jet has been on the shores of the river since the late 19th century, the permanent version was placed at the end of a jetty in 1951. Geneva is also home to the Palace of Nations and the Red Cross. Found in the far west of Switzerland, it's one of the most expensive cities on the globe.
7. This image depicts the skyline of what Asian city?

Answer: Kuala Lumpur

The skyline can be identified solely from the twin towers on the left-- the Petronas Towers. Once the tallest skyscrapers in the world (until 2004), they remain some of the most memorable buildings worldwide. Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia, is a major force in world economics and commerce; it comes as no surprise that one of its most famous landmarks is a pair of skyscrapers.

The skyline is also characterized by the Kuala Lumpur Tower, a telecommunication structure also used for tourism, and the unique Menara Telekom.
8. A location overlooking Sentosa and the residential Bukit Merah area, this view is taken in Singapore atop what local natural landmark?

Answer: Mount Faber

Found in Central Singapore, Mount Faber has unparalleled views of this commercial hub of Southeastern Asia and actually connects to the edge of the ocean and the resort island of Sentosa via cable car access. The Mount Faber area, home to an observatory and rainforest, is known for its lush walking paths and scenic overlooks from which one can see the downtown core and many of the city's unique structures (like the Marina Bay Sands and the Singapore Flyer). Both Mount Faber and Sentosa are only a short drive away from Suntec City and the harbourfront.
9. Which geological region is found in Southern Vietnam?

Answer: The Mekong Delta

The Mekong Delta, nearly forty thousand square kilometers of protected ecological space taking up the entire southern reach of Vietnam, is an extremely diverse expanse named after the Mekong Delta, one of the longest rivers in Asia. Home to millions of Vietnamese citizens, this region is within minutes of Ho Chi Minh City, the largest city in Vietnam (though not its capital, which would be Hanoi) and is allegedly host to numerous species of fish and plant life, many of which have yet to be discovered or catalogued.
10. Which west coast North American city is this?

Answer: Seattle

If it weren't Mount Rainier rising from the background, it must've been the Space Needle smack-dab in the middle of the painting. Seattle, the largest city in Washington (though not the capital), is the main hub for travel and trading in the U.S.' Pacific northwest. Less than three hours away from Vancouver across the Canadian border, Seattle sits on the edge of the Olympic Mountain range and on the coast of Puget Sound, giving it access to the ocean.
