Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This dam on the Verzasca River is one of the tallest bungee jumping spots in the world. It can be found in which nation?

Answer: Switzerland

Verzasca River only stretches approximately thirty kilometers through the Swiss Alps, but its effect on the Locarno region is very clear if you travel a short distance along it. The Locarno Dam, also known as Verzasca Dam, has created Lago di Vogorno since the mid-1960s and serves as one of the highest bungee jumps in the world. You may remember the landmark from one of the earlier scenes in the James Bond film "Goldeneye"...though that part of the film was set in Russia.
2. Schönau am Königsee is found in what German region, also the country's largest and southernmost state?

Answer: Bavaria

Schönau am Königsee is found in the extreme southeast of Germany, literally bordering the city of Salzburg across the border in Austria. Found in the mountainous Alpine region of Germany, Schönau am Königsee is home to one of the oldest bobsled tracks in the world and has been used by more than one country in Olympic bids.

The town is also located on the glacially-created Königssee Lake, part of the UNESCO-protected Berchtesgaden National Park.
3. Bran Castle, which served as the inspiration for Dracula's castle, can be found in the Transylvanian region of what nation?

Answer: Romania

A small town near the city of Brașov, Romania, Bran is situated smack-dab in the middle of the country amongst the beautiful Southern Carpathian mountain range. One of Romania's most famous landmarks, Bran Castle was immortalized in Bram Stoker's "Dracula", not because it made a direct appearance, but because it was the inspiration for Count Dracula's own abode. Bran is also a part of Transylvania, a region in Europe that stretches from Hungary through to the center of Romania.
4. This electric dam appears on the Russian 10 ruble bill. Where is it found?

Answer: Krasnoyarsk

Krasnoyarsk is part of Russia's Siberian reaches and much of the surrounding area is surrounded by forests and low mountains. The Krasnoyarsk Dam, an engineering wonder of Russia, is actually on the back of the 10 ruble note. Built in the Soviet Era, the dam created the Krasnoyarsk Sea just outside the city, damming the Yenisei River which, at more than five and a half thousand kilometers in length, stretches northward into the Arctic Ocean and connects to other rivers as far south as Lake Baikal and Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
5. The third-largest city in Russia is which of these, located at kilometer 3,335 on the Trans-Siberian Railway and on the Ob River?

Answer: Novosibirsk

Novosibirsk, the largest city in Siberian and Asian Russia, is the third most populous in the country. Known for its frigid winters and its performing arts, specifically ballet, Novosibirsk is an important city of culture. The Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre, also known as the Novosibirsk Colosseum, is actually larger than the world-famous Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow, the nation's capital.

The Ob River, which flows north into the Arctic Ocean, is one of the longest in the world.
6. What Indian city, home to the Amber Fort, is known as the 'Pink City of India'?

Answer: Jaipur

The capital city of the Rajasthan region of India, Jaipur is known as the Pink City because of its natural colouring; many of its structures are built from pink stone. The Amber Fort, however, is a gold-coloured building made of red sandstone. Sitting on Maota Lake, the fort, along with the adjacent Jaigarh Fort, was built for the royal family of Rajasthan in the late sixteenth century.

It has since, along with the other Hill Forts of the Rajasthan region, become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
7. Chao Phraya River is the main river flowing through what Asian capital city?

Answer: Bangkok

The Chao Phraya River flows from both the Nan and Ping Rivers out into the Gulf of Thailand, and in doing so it cuts directly through the city of Bangkok, home to over eight million Thai citizens. The view from the image provided is from Wat Arun, also known as the Temple of Dawn, one of the country's most famous Hindu temples.

While many bridges cross the Chao Phraya River, Bangkok locals also use an extensive, often-unofficial ferry system operated by longtail boats.
8. Found amongst the Folded Brocade Mountains, the Sun and Moon Pagodas on Banyan Lake are in what nation?

Answer: China

Surrounded by forests of Sweet Osmanthus and mountainous karst edifices, the city of Guilin sits on the Li River in the Guangxi region. While many from outside China would be unlikely to know the city of Guilin by name, it happens to be a fairly popular tourist spot for Chinese citizens due in part to its year-round balmy temperatures and natural splendour.

The depicted Sun and Moon Pagodas are both on Banyan Lake, one of many water sources interspersed throughout the region.
9. The Bird's Nest was one of the official symbols of the 2008 Olympic Games held in what city?

Answer: Beijing

The Summer Games of the XXIX Olympiad were held in Beijing, China, and the Bird's Nest (the Beijing National Stadium, also known as Niao Chao), was constructed for the event to hold the opening and closing ceremonies. It's also the first stadium ever to be slated to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics. Found in the Chaoyang District of Beijing on the Olympic Green, much of the surrounding area is populated by sporting venues and an Olympic Village.

The area also sits alongside a man-made offshoot of the Qinghe River, which crosses through this heavily-populated metropolis.
10. Maalaea Bay is found off the coast of what Pacific Island?

Answer: Maui

Maalaea Bay is home to both beautiful beaches and the Maui Ocean Center, a tourist and scientific building dedicated to local ocean life. Found on the southwest coast of Maui, Hawaii's second-largest island, it's also close to the West Maui Mountains, home to volcanoes that've been on the islands for three hundred thousand years. Maalaea Bay is also an important site for the construction of artificial coral reefs which are used to improve and sustain the undersea ecosystems around the island.
