Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Towards the center of this photo is Ca' da Mosto, the oldest building in what famous canal city?

Answer: Venice

Palazzo da Mosto, found along the Grand Canal of Venice, Italy, is home to the oldest building in the floating city, Ca' da Mosto, which was built in the thirteenth century. In the eight centuries since its construction, the waters of Venice have risen to a point where the building is in dire need of restoration or else, like much of the rest of the city, it's at risk of sinking into the Venetian Lagoon in the Adriatic. Because of its significance as a cultural landmark, Venice and its surrounding waters are protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
2. The view from the top of the Donauturm overlooks Vienna, Austria. What river is shown in the picture?

Answer: Danube

The Donauturm, which translates to 'Danube Tower', is the tallest structure in all of Austria at a maximum height of two hundred fifty two meters. Overlooking Vienna, the capital, it gives panoramic views of a city known for being a home to composers Mozart and Beethoven centuries ago. Vienna is one of the most populated cities in Europe which, in all fairness, might be because it's also considered one of the world's most suitable cities to live in.

It might also be because of their delicious sachertortes. So good!
3. Which of these cities, home to the Phare de Sainte Marie, is on the coast of the Mediterranean?

Answer: Marseille

All of these cities are in France, but only Marseille is anywhere near the Mediterranean Sea. Found in the southeast of France, Marseille, the third-largest city in the country, is just around the bend from the Cote d'Azur and is only a short distance away from the French Alps. A city of forts and bays, it's perhaps best known for its food and opera. Marseille's Phare de Sainte Marie is a limestone lighthouse on the harbour front.

Other Mediterranean cities in France include Cannes, Nice, and St. Tropez, all of which are luxurious vacation spots.
4. The Scheepvaartmuseum, found on the River Amstel, is one of many museums in which Dutch city?

Answer: Amsterdam

Part of North Holland in The Netherlands, Amsterdam is the Dutch capital city and one of the primary tourist draws of the country. Situated on the River Amstel, the city is known for being very much like Venice-- many canals cut through Amsterdam, allowing people to cross on foot (via bridge) or in boats. Being so close to the sea, Amsterdam is also a significant port.

The Scheepvaartmuseum, built several hundred years ago as a warehouse, is actually a maritime museum-- one of the foremost in the nation.

Despite this, Rotterdam (in South Holland) is the largest port in the country, and one of the largest in the world).
5. The town of Alleppey is found near the city of Cochin, a city on the Arabian Sea in what Asian country?

Answer: India

Cochin, India, also known as Kochi, is one of the largest cities in Kerala, the state on the southwestern coast of the country. Alleppey is actually a smaller town, but its natural beauty and significant canal system are considered some of the most picturesque in all of India.

The town is also known for hosting annual boat races along the edge of Punnamada Lake, one of the largest in the country and home to a large tract of wetlands, and hosting significant amounts of tourists, mainly because of its proximity to the Arabian Sea.
6. The Sepilok Nature Reserve near Sandakan is home to an orangutan sanctuary. On which island would you be able to visit it?

Answer: Borneo

Found in Sabah, Malaysia (on the island of Borneo) near Sandakan, the Sepilok Nature Reserve is one of the only wildlife centers home to wild orangutans. Part of the extensive rainforest tracts in Malaysian Borneo, the location is characterized by lush, dense expanses. Funnily enough, the sanctuary is closer to the Philippines across the Sulu Sea than any nearby capitals. One of largest cities on Malaysian Borneo, Kota Kinabalu, is actually more than three hundred kilometers away while the nearest Philippine Islands are less than one hundred.
7. The Imjin River flows through the Demilitarized Zone between which two countries, both of which have been at war with one another for many years?

Answer: North Korea and South Korea

The Imjin River, one of Korea's longest, flows down towards the South Korean capital city, Seoul, before flowing out to the ocean. This waterway actually weaves through the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) separating the two countries. The Hantan River, one of its many tributaries, is well-known for its white-water rafting courses, and during the winter both become covered in thick ice, making it possible to walk across (though many of the northern reaches of the Imjin are lined with taller cliffs.
8. Mooloolaba is the name given to a town in which Australian state?

Answer: Queensland

Found north of Brisbane, Australia along the beautiful Sunshine Coast, Mooloolaba is a tourist town with a funny name. Also known as 'The Spit', Mooloolaba's main draw is its beaches which, along the Coral Sea, are protected from more dangerous surf.

This is also a reason that the town is also a popular harbour. Visitors are also likely to enjoy a trip to Underwater World, a popular aquarium home to a walk-through shark observation tank and a collection of seals. Mooloolaba and Brisbane are both part of Australia's northeastern state, Queensland, which also contains the Great Barrier Reef (albeit over a thousand kilometers north towards Cairns).
9. Mauna Loa is found in which of these National Parks?

Answer: Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park

Mauna Loa is regarded as the largest volcano in the world and while it has a lower elevation than many prominent peaks around the globe it sinks below the surface a great distance. Part of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park on the big island of Hawaii, the location is protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, partly because of its important role in Hawaiian culture and partly because of its scientific merit.

The observatory at Mauna Loa, for instance, is one of the leading solar research sites on the planet.

The nearby volcano of Kīlauea is also active, having started erupting in the early 1980s and been unable to stop.
10. Papago Park, home to the pyramid-shaped Hunt's Tomb, is a major site in which U.S. city?

Answer: Phoenix

Papago Park, found on the U.S.' National Register of Historic Places, is notable for a few reasons. Hunt's Tomb, for instance, was built for the first Arizona Governor in a pyramid in Papago Park. The site is also home to the Phoenix Zoo. Large enough to spread through both Phoenix and neighbouring Tempe, Arizona, the park contains everything from unique rock formations (including the famous Hole-in-the-Rock) to fields of Saguaro Cacti.
