Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The City of Toronto sits on the shores of what Great Lake?

Answer: Lake Ontario

The easternmost of the five Great Lakes, Lake Ontario is home to Toronto and Kingston in Ontario and Rochester on the New York side. The lake is the only one of the five to connect directly to the Atlantic, doing so via the St. Lawrence River which cuts through the remainder of Southern Ontario and Quebec. Toronto, Ontario's capital city, is the largest by population in all of Canada.

There, you can visit the CN Tower, the Royal Ontario Museum, Casa Loma, and the Skydome (now known as Rogers Center).
2. If you visit Poás Volcano National Park you can walk right up to the crater. To do this, however, you need to be in what country?

Answer: Costa Rica

Poás Volcano National Park reaches nearly three kilometers above sea level in the center of Costa Rica. Very much an active volcano, it's also one of the most popular for tourists because people can head straight to the top. Alajuela Province in which the National Park stretches along the Pacific Coast and features a number of volcanoes, rainforests, and picturesque towns. Costa Rica sits between Nicaragua and Panama in Central America.
3. In Eastern Venezuela, you can visit the world's tallest waterfall. What is its name?

Answer: Angel Falls

Angel Falls, Venezuela was only found by explorers in the early twentieth century when pilots made their way over the area in the mid-1930s. Named after pilot Jimmie Angel, the falls were recognized as the tallest in the world, running nearly one kilometer from top to bottom. Getting there isn't the easiest though, and its isolation in the dense jungles of eastern Venezuela make it one of the lesser seen extreme natural landmarks in the world.

The falls begin atop a tepui, a South American mesa, and are fed almost entirely by tropical rain clouds above.

It's unsurprising to find the falls covered by clouds at any given time.
4. Despite not being part of Greece, this city across the Mediterranean prospered greatly in Ancient and Hellenic times and had a near-incomparable naval force. What is this Tunisian location?

Answer: Carthage

Carthage, established in the first century BC, was the site of the Punic Empire and one of the major powers of ancient history at that time. The city was eventually invaded by the Romans who expanded southward centuries later. Now, all that remains of Carthage is ruins.

Despite an extensively-researched past (for what can be obtained), Carthage is now a tourist destination on the Mediterranean Coast and, due to modern expansion, a residential area for upper-middle-class Tunisians. You can get there easily from Tunis.
5. It doesn't matter if you take the high road or the low road-- either way you can visit this Scottish loch, the largest in area the British Isles, northwest of Glasgow. What is its name?

Answer: Loch Lomond

While Loch Ness, only one hundred twenty-five miles north of Loch Lomond, may contain mythical creatures, Loch Lomond (you know their bonnie bonnie banks) is the largest, taking up the most space in Scotland and the rest of the British Isles. While Ness is much larger in volume, Lomond stretches across the Trossachs National Park and, within a short drive from Glasgow (or even Edinburgh if you have a few hours) it makes for a beautiful trip through rolling hills.

There are many cruises along the loch, many of which visit the islands along its surface.
6. Found on the Baltic Sea, what Russian city is actually part of an exclave with no physical attachment to the rest of the country?

Answer: Kaliningrad

Once known as Königsberg, the city of Kaliningrad is technically in Russia (as the Kaliningrad Oblast is still governed by the country, but it's not really near Russia at all-- it's on the Baltic Coast between Poland and Lithuania). In existence for more than seven centuries, the city is now an interesting port on the Pregolya River. Also rich in cultural heritage, the city boasts beautiful pre and post-war architecture and is home to the museum of philosopher Immanuel Kant who was born and died in the city while it was still under German rule in the late eighteenth century.

It became part of Russia at the end of the Second World War. Vladivostok, one of Russia's easternmost cities, is more than ten thousand kilometers away.
7. Along India's west coast you can have some fun in the sun in what state, home to the city of Vasco da Gama and heavy influences of earlier Portuguese rule?

Answer: Goa

Goa, perhaps best known for its beaches, is one of the smallest regions in India though a large portion of the country borders the Arabian Sea as it juts southward into the Indian Ocean. Goa, approximately halfway down the coast, takes in millions for fun and sun but also houses a number of Portuguese-influenced houses and temples.

In fact, the state is home to a number of highly-protected religious sites off the beaten path. The city of Vasco da Gama is the region's largest; it was obviously named after the explorer. Da Gama was the first European to land in India.
8. Found in Nepal, which of these cities, now a holy site, was the birthplace of Gautama Buddha?

Answer: Lumbini

While many may look to Nepal for its location in the Himalayan Mountains (and its being home of Mount Everest), the country is also one of deep religious history. Lumbini, found in the southwest of Nepal near the border with India, was the birthplace and home of the eventual founder of Buddhism, Siddhartha Gautama, over two and a half millennia ago (at Maya Devi Temple). Now, Lumbini is both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a place of pilgrimage for followers of Buddhism; followers usually visit for festivals in April and May though religious visitors arrive year round.
9. What country is home to the bulk of the mountain known as Gangkhar Puensum, considered one of the highest unclimbable mountains in the world (because of its religious restrictions)?

Answer: Bhutan

Bhutan, 'The Land of the Thunder Dragon' as it were, is known by many as the 'Happiest Country in the World', but it's also a land of unspoiled beauty landlocked between China/Tibet to the north and India to the south. Its placement puts it amongst the Himalayas, and amongst them is Gangkhar Puensum, the fortieth-highest peak in the world and one of the most unclimbable, specifically because in the 2000s it was prohibited in the way of mountaineering.

The rest of Bhutan is mountainous and contains high glaciers in the north and lush valleys in the south.

The capital, Thimphu, is in a central valley on the Wang Chhu River.
10. One of the most famous landmarks of Australia, Ayers Rock is also known by what name given to it by Outback aboriginals?

Answer: Uluru

Uluru, found smack dab in the middle of the barren Australian Outback, is a day trip to say the least. Far from its nearest major town, Alice Springs, Ayers Rock is a sacred site to Aboriginals and a major tourist draw for an otherwise stark landscape. Nearly three hundred fifty meters high, the rock was, at one time, climbed by numerous people each year, usually via hiking trail up the side. Climbing has since been banned. Made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park is, otherwise, simply hot and deserted.
