Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Livingstone, a Zambian city named after famous explorer David Livingstone, is near what famous African landmark, our first destination?

Answer: Victoria Falls

Livingstone, Zambia, is the hub from which most tourists access the world-famous Victoria Falls, perhaps Africa's most famous waterfall, located near the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. Although the city was named after David Livingstone (one would presume), Livingstone died nearly two decades prior to the establishment of the location. Victoria Falls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1989, is situated on the Zambesi River.

It's also known as Mosi-oa-Tunya, the Smoke That Thunders.
2. Our tour of Paris, France, began atop the Eiffel Tower. If we wanted to go to a landmark in the city that we couldn't see from the top of this structure, where would we go?

Answer: Catacombes de Paris

Although the Eiffel Tower gives an unparalleled view of the City of Lights, the Catacombs are found underneath the city, stretching, to what some think, may be over two hundred miles of passages. Otherwise, the Eiffel Tower, situated on the Champ de Mars near the Seine River, gives a wonderful panorama from which you can see the Arc de Triomphe, the Pantheon, the Louvre, Champs-Élysées, and other famous spots throughout the city.

Unfortunately, we don't have x-ray vision.
3. It's time to head to Southern France. To which province are we going if we're at the mouth of the Rhone River?

Answer: Provence

The province of Provence in southern France rests on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, three hundred miles by train south of Paris. While this region is home to the mouth of the Rhone and the Italian border, it's also filled with rolling, green hills. Château des Baux in Les Baux de Provence, a tenth century fort standing atop the region, is the perfect vantage point from which to view the landscape.

This province is also home to Avignon, Marseille and Saint-Tropez.
4. We don't need to go to a galaxy far, far away. Where in Tunisia could we go to visit the location depicted, also known for its use as a "Star Wars" set?

Answer: Tataouine

Tataouine actually gave its name to Luke Skywalker's home planet, Tatooine, in the original "Star Wars" trilogy; it was later revisited in later-released films. It gained fame after George Lucas completed the filming of his sci-fi epic in Tunisia, garnering a surprising amount of tourist traffic in later years to the North African country.

The south of Tunisia is also home to a portion of the Sahara Desert and, as such, it's quite hot and sandy...like Mos Eisley.
5. Where is our Italian destination if we've decided to visit Altare della Patria for a snapshot?

Answer: Rome

This statue, also known as Il Vittoriano, is one of Rome's newer monuments as it was built during the twentieth century. It stands with the other landmarks of Rome which include the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, and the Pantheon. Found near Piazza Venezia, one of Rome's main traffic hubs, the statue was created as a memorial to the first King of Italy.

While not as famous as some of the other sites built in Ancient Roman times, its white marble and Corinthian styling allow it to fit in with the rest quite easily.
6. We're off to Hawa Mahal! If we're in this location, we're in what country?

Answer: India

Hawa Mahal is better known as the Palace of the Winds and it can be visited in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India. A truly magnificent sandstone structure built as part of the city palace at the turn of the nineteenth century, its pink colour makes it easy to tell why Jaipur is also known as India's Pink City. Jaipur is nearly three hundred miles southwest of Delhi, the country's capital, and it's also home to Jantar Mantar and the Amber Fort.

The capital of Rajasthan, it's also close to several historic forts, the large Thar Desert, and beautiful, sacred lakes.
7. Ko Kai Island, Chicken Island, is found off the coast of Thailand. What sea are we visiting if we're diving off its rocky shores?

Answer: Andaman Sea

Ko Kai is part of the Southern Islands of Phang Nga Bay near Krabi, Thailand; all of these islands, part of a large chain of tropical coastal outcrops, are in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Siam. Ko Kai, one of the more uniquely-shaped islands in the sea, is better known as Chicken Island because of the head-shaped rock at one end. One of the Surin Islands, this location is close to the Myanmar border only a few miles to the north. Part of a national park, the island boasts magnificent waters for diving.
8. We might as well grab something to eat-- may I suggest stopping for deep-fried centipedes at Donghuamen Market? Where can we enjoy this treat?

Answer: Beijing

Donghuamen Night Market, found near the Forbidden City of Beijing, is a unique cultural center in the Chinese capital known for its exotic food selection, usually consisting of deep-fried creepy crawlies of all sorts. It would not be out of place to have chicken feet, crickets, and sheep eyes at one of the many stalls lining the building. Beijing, aside from the odd fare, is also home to Tiantan Park, parts of the Great Wall of China, and Tiananmen Square.

This city, one of the most populated in China, has been inhabited for thousands of years.
9. In which part of the world would you visit the Matanuska Glacier?

Answer: North America

Matanuska Glacier is a large block of ice and snow stretching twenty-seven miles through the Alaskan wilderness northeast of Anchorage, the largest city in the U.S.' northernmost state. The largest glacier you can drive to in the States, it's a site for adventurers looking to ice climb as well as travelers looking for a unique spot in the great white north.

The largest glacier in North America, also in Alaska, is Bering Glacier; it's near Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, close to Glacier Bay, and it's not eminently reachable by car.
10. We're standing here taking the photo depicted. In which city are we?

Answer: New York City

The photo depicts Ellis Island, specifically the historic building which once housed the immigration inspection station on the New York City coast. In the background is the Statue of Liberty on the adjacent Liberty Island; both are national landmarks sitting between Jersey City, New Jersey and Manhattan.

The main building found on Ellis Island was constructed in 1900 and saw millions upon millions of immigrants through its doors before closing in the 1950s; it's responsible for the descendants of one third of the United States population in the twenty-first century.
