Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bordering Bolivia, Paraguay, and Chile, Salta Province's mountains and valleys are part of which nation?

Answer: Argentina

Found in the northwest of Argentina (though not the furthest in the corner), this sprawling province is fairly dry due in part to the Andes Mountains stretching down along its western edge (sharing the border with Chile). To the east are valleys and cities that were eventually occupied by the Spanish in the seventeenth century.

The capital of the province is also Salta, a city of Spanish colonial architecture and local wineries. Because of its location, the region is also prone to earthquakes.
2. One of the oldest cities in South America, which of these was established on the Paraguay River?

Answer: Asunción

The Paraguay River, which connects to the Parana River before flowing into the Atlantic Ocean, was first explored by the Spanish and Asunción was established there in the sixteenth century. The city of Asunción happens to be the capital of Paraguay and, right across the river, you can head into the northeast corner of Argentina. Because of its central location and its access to the ocean, it was a starting point for many Spanish and Portuguese colonization efforts on the continent.
3. Appearing on the side of the Italy's version of the two-cent Euro coin, Mole Antonelliana, depicted, is in what Northern Italian city?

Answer: Turin

Built over the span of more than two decades in the nineteenth century, the Mole Antonelliana stands as one of the most prominent and distinctive structures in Turin, the largest city in Piedmont in the northwest of the country. Known in the modern era as the Italian National Museum of Cinema, the landmark is also home to an observation deck accessed by an elevator that rises up through the center of the structure. Turin was the host city for the Winter Olympic Games in 2006 and the Mole was featured prominently during coverage of the events.
4. Neuschwanstein Castle can be found in which region of Europe?

Answer: Bavaria

Opened in 1886, this Romaesque Revival castle was considered the inspiration for the castle seen in Disney's "Sleeping Beauty". Sitting atop a foothill in the Bavarian Alps, it overlooks the village of Hohenschwangau, home to another castle on an adjacent peak. Neuschwanstein, however, built for Ludwig II, is one of the most picturesque and most visited castles in all of Europe. Bavaria, found in the Southeast of Germany, also contains the cities of Munich, Nuremberg, and Augsburg.
5. The Ateshgah of Baku in Azerbaijan is also known by which of these names?

Answer: Fire Temple

Formerly a place of worship for several different religions, the Ateshgah of Baku has been used over the centuries on and off. It most famous feature, a constantly-lit flame, is fuelled by natural gases from below; Azerbaijan is very specifically known for its oil and gas production. Though the flame went out in the late 1960s, it was relit in the 1970s and made into a museum. Found just east of the city of Baku, Azerbaijan's capital, it was once considered a place of pilgrimage for Zoroastrians.
6. Which of these locations sits in the Highlands of Tanzania?

Answer: Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Found in the world's largest inactive volcanic caldera, Ngorongoro is technically part of the Serengeti and is a home settlement of the Maasai Mara people. Interestingly, the ecosystem found here is very much contained, so it leads to significant numbers of wildlife all living in close proximity to one another. Though Tanzania sits on the Indian Ocean, the bottom of Ngorongoro is nearly two kilometers above sea level.

This natural point of interest is only three hundred kilometers west of Africa's highest peak, Kilimanjaro, which rises nearly six kilometers above sea level.
7. The Laccadive Sea, sitting on the south coast of India between the mainland and Sri Lanka, reaches as far north as what coastal city?

Answer: Kochi

Kochi, facing west off of India's west coast, was established as a major city in 1958, comparatively late after many of India's other larger areas. Don't let the year fool you though-- Kochi and the surrounding area have long been considered the epicentre of India's spice trade since the fourteenth century.

The largest city of Kerala state, it acts as a major financial and industrial hub for the region. Chennai sits on the eastern side of India on the Bay of Bengal, Mumbai is on the west facing out to the Indian Ocean, and Hyderabad is central within the country; there are no bodies of water there.
8. The Itsukushima Shrine, depicted, is found in the Sea of Japan.

Answer: False

The Itsukushima Shrine, found in Hiroshima Bay, is actually on the opposite side of the Japanese island of Shikoku facing out towards the Pacific Ocean. This torii shrine is on what was formerly known as Miyajima and today it stands as a World Heritage Site and Japanese National Monument. Floating in the waters off the coast of the island, it also sits nestled in the surrounding mountains. Mount Misen, nearby, is considered sacred.
9. The castle depicted is surrounded by a moat that runs alongside the Neya River in what East Asian city?

Answer: Osaka

The Neya River connects Lake Biwa, northeast of Osaka, to the sea, and serves as a primary waterway between it and Kyoto. Depicted is actually Osaka Castle, built on a mound alongside the river and surrounded by a moat for protection. Today it's a landmark of cultural importance and particular beauty. Osaka is otherwise a very modern city known for its food and businesses.

It's one of the most heavily-populated anywhere in the world.
10. The Hawaiian capital city, Honolulu, is found on what island?

Answer: O'ahu

Sitting on the southeast coast of O'ahu, Honolulu is Hawaii's largest city, having been selected as the capital of the island chain in the 1840s, more than one hundred years before joining the United States. Situated in a sheltered bay in the Pacific, Honolulu is considered the most remote major city on the planet, and it's not hard to believe considering how isolated the Hawaiian islands truly are in the middle of the ocean. Honolulu, technically, is closer to Alaska than it is to the continental United States.
