Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Shinjuku is a central ward in what Asian capital city?

Answer: Tokyo

Home to one of the biggest transport hubs in the world, Shinjuku is a highly-populated ward of Tokyo, Japan. While densely packed with locals, the area lying around this centralized region is home to some of the largest companies in Japan, so it's also a major commuter destination for Japanese businesspeople. Shinjuku is bordered by six other districts including Chiyoda and Shibuya, the former of which is home to the Imperial Palace and the latter of which is a major shopping area.
2. The town of Yamanouchi is a ski resort near Nagano, Japan. Known for its monkey-frequented hot springs, it sits in what mountain range?

Answer: Japanese Alps

Yamanouchi, found in Nagano Prefecture, is home to the Shiga Highlands Ski Resort (formerly a Winter Olympic site) but international travellers are likely to know the destination for its hot springs, since every winter local Japanese macaques descend from higher altitudes to bask in the waters at Jigokudani Monkey Park, also known as Hell's Valley.

The Japanese Alps are comprised of the Hida, Kiso, and Akaishi ranges and include a handful of active volcanoes; they are most visited by travellers looking for outdoor winter activities.
3. Which of these Asian seas is home to Kathu, Krabi, and Koh Lanta?

Answer: Andaman Sea

All three of these destinations are found in the south end of Thailand and are part of a string of well-known vacation and beach spots (especially for college-age travellers). The sea here is known for coral reefs, beautiful coasts, and fishing, though this part of the world is also a bit prone to natural disasters, occasionally from monsoons but also from the periodic tsunami.

The Andaman Sea also touches on Myanmar, Indonesia, and the (get this) Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and it abuts the Indian Ocean.
4. This view looks out from the top of the Golden Mount, Wat Saket, across what city's north horizon?

Answer: Bangkok

The Golden Mount is one of the many temples in Bangkok, the Thai capital, and it's one of the best vantage points in the historical core of the city to spy out at the Chao Phraya River, the hundreds of surrounding wats, and the sprawling downtown sectors on the horizon.

The Golden Mount, also known as Wat Saket Ratcha Wora Maha Wihan, was built in the Ayutthaya Era on an artificial hill. It's both a functioning Buddhist temple and a major tourist spot in the modern era.
5. Lake Schliersee is a picturesque destination in what European region?

Answer: Bavaria

Found in the south of Germany, Lake Schliersee is approximately fifty kilometres southeast of Munich, the Bavarian capital. Nestled into the mountains of the Alps, it's one of many beautiful lakes in this region. Bavaria is one of Germany's largest states, but also one of the most sparsely-populated. Due to the mountains to the south, the towns and villages to the south of Munich are a bit fewer and further between.

It's unsurprising it's the most-visited by tourists though; the region's natural splendour is likely second-to-none in the country.
6. Depicted is an aerial view of what small European city-state?

Answer: Monaco

Found on the south coast of France, Monaco is a city-state known for being one of the wealthiest destinations in the world. Crammed into an area of under two square kilometers, the majority of its presence on the Mediterranean coast is actually in the provided photo-- it's that small. Though it's also a short drive from Italy, Monaco is surrounded by France-- the closest city is Nice.

Besides its unique geographical info, it's also the home of the world-famous Casino de Monte Carlo and the Monaco Grand Prix.
7. Found in Namibia, which of these, named by German colonists, is considered 'The Matterhorn of Africa'?

Answer: Spitzkoppe

Rising in the Namib Desert, one of the most sparsely-populated locations in the world, Spitzkoppe consists of dozens of peaks rising up from the sands. These granite edifices are made all the more striking because they're surrounded by notably flat desert plains. Though not difficult to climb in a modern and technical sense, it proved to be one of the more daunting climbing destinations of Africa for quite a while, especially when the area was used as a trading post by German colonists in the late nineteenth century.

The region has been inhabited by local bushmen much longer though. The name 'Spitzkoppe' translates to 'pointed dome' in German.
8. Munttoren, seen here, sits on a square where the Singel Canal connects with which river?

Answer: Amstel

Translating to 'Mint Tower', this building, one of Amsterdam's many unique landmarks, was once part of a city wall around what is still a stretch of market space in the heart of the Dutch Capital. Rising up from the intersection of the city's namesake river (the Amstel) and the former city moat, the Singel Canal, it contains a centuries-old carillon of more than three dozen bells.

The square on which it sits, the Muntplein, actually rises up over the waters as a bridge, the widest such stretch of navigable roadway in Amsterdam.
9. Although found in a mountainous country, the cities of Trujillo and Huanchaco are on the Pacific Coast of what nation?

Answer: Peru

Although when most people think of Peru their minds will immediately shift to the highest reaches of the Andes Mountains, Machu Picchu, and the capital city of Lima, one might be surprised to find that one of its largest cities, Trujillo, actually rests in the northwest on the edge of the Pacific (at sea level!). Though the highlands rise sharply once you enter rural Peru, Trujillo is a warm and festive city known for being the home of several pre-Incan civilizations, city beaches and resorts, and notable Spanish architecture.
10. Trinity River is the longest river located entirely within the U.S. state of Texas. It also happens to connect which Texan city to the sea?

Answer: Dallas

Winding more than four hundred miles from the far north of Texas all the way down to Galveston Bay on the Gulf Coast, Trinity River acts as the major artery for water passing through the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. The seventh-longest river in the state, it shares the land with the Rio Grande, the Colorado, and the Red River.

Much of the Dallas skyline looks along the edge of the river in the city's west side. The river is prone to extreme flooding on occasion though the city actively protects the area; the area around the Great Trinity Forest is one of the largest urban woodlands in the nation.
