Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Chagres River cuts through Soberanía National Park and, interestingly, drains into two oceans. You can visit it in what nation?

Answer: Panama

If you visit the rainforests of Gamboa in Soberanía National Park, you'll be able to take a leisurely ride on the Chagres River, which cuts straight through this protected area known for its monkeys and diverse birdlife. The largest river affiliated with the Panama Canal, the Chagres is dammed in more than one spot, creating the reservoirs that service the canal proper, and as a result this waterway flows both into the Caribbean Sea to the north (and the Atlantic) as well as the Gulf of Panama (and the Pacific) to the south.

This type of bifurcation is quite rare around the world especially in larger countries (though it does occur!).
2. The central spot in this Brazilian city, home to the depicted cathedral, is known as Praça da Sé. What city is it?

Answer: São Paulo

One of the largest Gothic-style cathedrals in the world, the São Paulo Cathedral, seen here on the one end of the Praça da Sé, is one of the largest monuments in this massive Brazilian city known for its urban sprawl and large population. Home to a number of public art installations and the site of many historical public gatherings in São Paulo, this plaza shares the spot with Marco Zero de São Paulo, making it the spot from which all street numbers begin in the city.
3. Hop on a ferry and head due north from Dar es Salaam and you'll arrive at which of these?

Answer: Zanzibar

The Zanzibar Archipelago, found off the coast of Tanzania in the Indian Ocean, is comprised of a handful of islands, the largest of which is Unguja, home to Zanzibar City's two regions, Stone Town and Ng'ambo. Though overseen by the United Kingdom as part of the commonwealth, it later sought independence in the mid-20th century and merged with the region of Tanganyika to form 'Tanzania'.

The islands here are known for their marine life. Off the coast of Unguja is a series of coral reefs.
4. From Mount Aksla, you can look down on the city of Ålesund, found in what nation?

Answer: Norway

The mountain overlooking the city of Ålesund, Aksla is the ideal viewpoint for anyone visiting the Venice of Norway. Reachable on foot, this lookout point is surrounded by coastal waters and archipelago in all directions. Established as a fishing village in the early 19th century, it's since become a condensed stretch of Art Nouveau architecture, narrow bridged waterways, and the fjords of Sunnmøre. Ålesund is about five hundred kilometres (give or take) northwest of Oslo.
5. One of the deepest lakes in Europe, which of these bodies of water is home to Cernobbio, Varenna, and Tremezzo on its shores?

Answer: Lake Como

One of Italy's largest lakes and one of the continent's deepest bodies of water (it's in fifth place), Lake Como is considered be some to be idyllic. Nestled into the Italian Alps, it's a short train ride or drive north of Milan, right on the edge of the Swiss-Italian border.

A destination for the wealthy and famous, it's known for the picturesque villages along its shores including the towns of Como, Bellagio, Varenna, and Cernobbio. As with most other lakes of the Alps, it was formed glacially.
6. This view from the Areopagus (translating to 'Hill of Ares'), is in what capital city?

Answer: Athens

Featured as a prominent location in retellings of Ancient Athenian history, the Areopagus is an outcropping of rock that sits with a prime view of the Acropolis (and the Parthenon) in the Greek capital. It is believed that this meeting spot was formerly used as a site for trials of Greek Gods.

Although it, at one time, contained a church, it remains today as a clear physical landmark amongst a series of monuments that, to this day, bear great significance.
7. The Old Quarter of what Asian capital city, found between Thuy Khue and Red River, was built to house thirty-six different trades operating outside the Imperial Citadel?

Answer: Hanoi

The city center of Hanoi, the Old Quarter can be found surrounding the Imperial Citadel of Thăng Long and is comprised of a grid of narrow streets, all of which are divided into different trades critical during the earlier days of Hanoi. Sitting close to the confluence of the Red River and the Duong River, it's a point from which Hanoi built outward, becoming Northern Vietnam's largest city more than one thousand years ago.

In modern times, the area still retains an old world charm but acts as a tourist destination filled with restaurants, hotels, and nightlife.
8. Hang Múa Peak, shown here, is one of many picturesque limestone peaks in what province of Vietnam?

Answer: Ninh Binh

Found on the edge of a series of limestone karst peaks outside the city of Ninh Binh, Hang Múa Peak rises amongst the extensive rice paddies and waterways that cut through the beautiful Vietnamese countryside known as Tam Cốc. Visitors to this mountain and its adjoining peak are in for a climb as hundreds of steps, well-worn and carved into the cliffs, allow you to scale to the dragon resting at the peak.

The surrounding region is idyllic, dotted with old stone temples, winding roads, and quiet, traditional lodges.

A short distance away, you can also stop by the largest Buddhist pagoda in Vietnam at Bái Đính Temple.
9. Which district, popularized by a famous song, shown here, is found south of the Han River?

Answer: Gangnam

The name 'Gangnam' translates literally to 'South of the River' (in this case, the Han River) but most people probably know the name from the PSY song "Gangnam Style". What PSY refers to is one of Seoul, South Korea's largest districts and one of its most expensive for the time; Gangnam is a convenient section of the city for residents and, due to its economical prominence, has a commercial footprint rivalling nearly all other South Korean cities combined.

In the 2010s, the value of an apartment in Gangnam was more than double that of virtually any other location in the nation.
10. The Chicago River feeds into what Great Lake?

Answer: Lake Michigan

Though the Chicago River doesn't take up much of the map as it carves its canals through the Windy City, it does serve a significant purpose or, at the very least, it did a long time ago. The Chicago River links into the Great Lakes via Lake Michigan, and those lakes lead all the way out to the Atlantic via the St. Lawrence River. From the Chicago River, if you went west, you would take the Portage route to the tributaries of the Mississippi River as it winds down to the Gulf of Mexico.

It's because of this river that the United States was able to begin its expansion into the American Midwest in the 17th century.
