Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Duffy's Square is a smaller part of a larger landmark in what U.S. state?

Answer: New York

The northern portion of Time's Square, Duffy's Square is known for its famous red steps which look southward down Broadway and 7th. Found at the 'Crossroads of the World', it's a pedestrian area that sits in the heart of New York City and has been used in countless films and TV shows over the years as one of the most popular Big Apple destinations. Duffy's Square was constructed in 1939 though the Times Square area was used by settlers on Manhattan Island for more than a century before.
2. The city of Charlotte Amalie is the capital of the United States Virgin Islands, but it's on what island?

Answer: St. Thomas

Originally a Danish colony, the island of St. Thomas is now one of the main destinations to visit in the U.S. Virgin Islands, acting as a port of call for cruise ships and a vacation destination with beautiful beaches, pirate-themed historical sites, and strongholds.

The United States purchased the islands here in an attempt to strategically position themselves in the Caribbean in the early-to-mid 20th century. Its largest city, Charlotte Amalie, holds more than half of its citizens and is home to Blackbeard's Castle and Fort Christian.
3. The Rivers Cherwell and Thames both cut through what UK University town northwest of London?

Answer: Oxford

Converging to the south of Oxford, these two rivers form the canals that wind their way around many of the city's main attractions including, sure enough, Oxford University, the world's oldest English-speaking university, established in the late 11th century. Oxford, the only city in Oxfordshire, is upstream from London (along the Thames) to the northwest.

Although its history dates back to medieval times, it's persisted as one of the most prestigious scholarly destinations in the world, being a place of higher education and a home to some of history's greatest writers, thinkers, artists, lawmen, scientists, and Nobel Prize winners.
4. The northernmost reach of the United Kingdom rests on the islands of what archipelago of the North Atlantic?

Answer: The Shetland Islands

Depicted is the beach at Skaw, the northernmost settlement of the Scottish Shetland Islands, a lightly-populated archipelago in the Northern Atlantic between the UK, Iceland, and Norway. The region has an interesting history since it was originally settled by Vikings.

In the centuries to follow it was absorbed by Scotland to the south. In the modern era, the Shetland Islands are home to humble ventures; they rely on agriculture and farming (especially of sheep) and fishing.
5. The bridge depicted stretches eight kilometers (and extends further as a four kilometer tunnel) between Malmö, Sweden and Copenhagen, Denmark. It crosses what body of water?

Answer: Öresund Strait

The Öresund Strait is the body of water separating Denmark from the rest of Scandinavia, specifically Sweden, and while it isn't too extensive, it does create an otherwise difficult-to-cross channel that, in earlier times, would have only been navigable by boat.

The Öresund Bridge, however, helps modern travellers cross from Copenhagen to Malmö, partly underwater but mostly above the strait. Because of this strait's importance for shipping (and, historically, military reasons), the bridge also allows for over-water access for boats crossing through the Baltic Sea and to and from the Atlantic.

The bridge was completed in 2000.
6. The Kutubiyya Mosque, found next to the marketplace of Jemaa el-Fnaa, is the largest mosque in what city?

Answer: Marrakesh, Morocco

Both are found in the medina quarter of Marrakesh, Morocco, one of the nation's largest cities. Surrounded by gardens and pedestrian streets, the Kutubiyya Mosque finished construction at the end of the twelfth century and remains a focal point for visitors. Nearby, the marketplace of Jemaa el-Fnaa is home to one of the most popular marketplaces on the continent. Filled with vendors, mobile restaurants, and performers, the market here is bordered on one side by the old souk.
7. Mount Pellegrino sits in the Tyrrhenian Sea. It's part of what island?

Answer: Sicily

Facing out into the bay off the north coast of Sicily, Mount Pellegrino reaches a height of just over six hundred meters, making it one of the highest points in the city of Palermo, the largest in this region of Italy. The hill here is home to winding roads with panoramic views and footpaths leading up to a shrine at the top (for the city's patron saint, Saint Rosalia). Sicily's tallest mountain, Mount Etna, is more than five times the height of Mount Pellegrino.
8. There are Blue Grottos throughout the Mediterranean Sea, but the one depicted, in the town of Qrendi, is in what country?

Answer: Malta

Although there are other Blue Grottos in Italy (on Capri and the Amalfi Coast), Croatia (on Bisevo), and Greece, Qrendi's Blue Grotto is Maltese. Carved into the coastline of this island nation, these caves, cliffs, and natural arches are one of the most-visited sites for tourists to Malta and typically only accessed by boats.

It's the ideal way though, since the waters found in the region are strikingly blue, hence the name. It's on the south side of the island.
9. The protected island of Ubin (or Pulau Ubin) is a short ferry ride away from what Southeast Asian city?

Answer: Singapore

Although once modestly-populated, the island of Ubin stopped being quite so bustling when it stopped being used for its quarry. Today, few locals remain since a large portion of the island is protected land being used to monitor hornbill and seahorse populations.

The island is still part of the Greater Singapore Area, being only a short ferry ride away from the city proper. Singapore is small in the grand scheme, at least in area, and it's mostly urbanized, so this is a bit of an island oasis.
10. The walled city district of Intramuros is a neighbourhood in what Southeast Asian nation's capital?

Answer: The Philippines

Manila was originally conquered by the Spanish in the 16th century, and at the time, what would become Intramuros was considered the capital due to its spot as a tactical point on Manila Bay. Strong fortifications were built to protect the city by encroaching foreign fleets and the city grew beyond those walls, creating one of the region's largest cities.

In the modern era, Intramuros is a site of culture, art, and architecture. Besides the beautiful gates, walls, and churches in the area, it's also home to several universities.
