Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On the left, Ipanema; on the right, Copacabana. What ocean are you on?

Answer: Atlantic

This view here looks right onto Forte de Copacabana and Pedra do Arpoador, the peninsula, fort, and lookout that separates Rio de Janeiro's two most iconic beaches. While Ipanema faces south, Copacabana curves northeast from this point. Known for its surfing, beach life, crowds, and tropical tendencies, this part of Rio is probably the most frequented by Brazilian tourists altogether. Rio de Janeiro, along with the rest of the major coastal cities of South America's largest nation, rests on the Atlantic Ocean.
2. Palermo is a major city on the island of Sicily, but it's also a barrio in what Spanish-speaking capital city?

Answer: Buenos Aires, Argentina

Palermo also happens to be the name of a neighbourhood in the Uruguayan capital city, Montevideo, and it's a name that's shared with numerous North American locales. In Buenos Aires, however, it's a large and highly-populated area of the city known for its greenery, its film and television industry, and its predilection towards polo.

It happens to be the polo destination for the city (and the site of the Argentine Polo Open at the Campo Argentino de Polo). Palermo is one of four dozen barrios in Buenos Aires and it is by far the largest.
3. Found across Brazil, Argentina, and the entirety of Uruguay, what geographical region translates to 'The Plains'?

Answer: Pampas

Although all four of these regions are found in South America, Las Pampas are the flatlands and plains found in more than a million square kilometres of the continent's east, taking up large expanses of Argentina, all of Uruguay, and the southern tip of Brazil. This region is best known for its ranching and farmlands; it's the home of the gaucho.
The other choices are elsewhere in South America-- the Atacama is the world's driest desert, the Pantanal is the planet's largest wetlands, and Patagonia is the mountainous region of Argentina bordering Chile.
4. Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World, straddles the border between which two African countries?

Answer: Zambia and Zimbabwe

Found on the Zambezi River, Victoria Falls is one of the world's longest waterfalls, stretching nearly two kilometers across the canyon it cascades into. Double the height and width of Niagara's Horseshoe Falls, Victoria Falls has long been known to locals as Mosi-oa-Tunya, or 'The Smoke That Thunders'; it wasn't known by its English name until it was visited and named by explorer David Livingstone. Livingstone's name was given to a nearby Zambian town, the likely point of arrival for international visitors to the landmark.
5. Pont Alexandre III, Pont de la Concorde, and Pont Royal are all crossings which straddle what European river?

Answer: Seine

In the city of Paris there are more than three dozen bridges which cross the River Seine at points throughout the urban centre, many of which are significant from a historical standpoint as they are older than many of the buildings along the water's edge. Pont Alexandre III leads to Les Invalides, Pont de la Concorde connects to Place de la Concorde and the west edge of Le Jardin des Tuleries, and Pont Royal, one of the oldest bridges in the city, is on the eastern edge of the gardens, closer to the Louvre.
6. Once one of the world's largest and most significant seaports, Rotterdam sits on which body of water?

Answer: North Sea

Growing to become Europe's largest port and, at one point, the largest in the world, the City of Rotterdam, one of the largest in the Netherlands, was surpassed by the seaports of East Asia in the 2000s (notably cities like Singapore and Shanghai). This being said, Rotterdam's position on the edge of the North Sea makes it the perfect location for boats travelling from the UK across the way, Scandinavia to the North, and some of Europe's most formidable trade partners bordering to the south. Rotterdam, as a city, shares prominence in the region of South Holland with The Hague, known for being the home of the International Court of Justice.
7. Saint Kinga Cathedral, found beneath the Earth's surface in a salt mine, is located in what country?

Answer: Poland

The Wieliczka Salt Mine, found outside of Krakow, Poland, is a 13th century salt mine known for years of operation, but in modern times, it's more of a tourist destination known for its unique sculptures, gathering spaces, and accoutrements. The mine there contains several expansive underground chapels, a labyrinth of narrow mine tunnels, and even a carved version of Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper". Saint Kinga, for whom one of the shafts and chapels is named, is a patron saint of Poland.
8. The city of Agra, home to the Taj Mahal, is in what Indian state?

Answer: Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh, which can be found in the north central region of India, is the most populated state in the nation and one of the largest. For comparison, it's about the size of the UK in terms of total area. Home to the cities of Lucknow, Agra, Varanasi, and Allahabad, it's perhaps best known for being the home of the Taj Mahal, one of India's most recognizable landmarks.

The gardens and grounds surrounding the Taj Mahal rest on the banks of the Yamuna River, which cuts through the city alongside the nearby Agra Fort. Part of the Golden Triangle, Agra is a major tourist stop for the region (along with Delhi and Jaipur).
9. Nam Van Lake is a man-made body of water, one of only two found in what densely-populated region?

Answer: Macau

Macau isn't that big a place, so the idea that it contains two man-made lakes is a pretty amazing thing. Nam Van Lake (pictured) and Sai Van Lake were created in the 1990s when Chinese developers closed off an existing bay in their effort to better build what would become a massive administrative district off of China's southern coast.

This being said, Macau has been in use as a port for more than five hundred years; it only became the tourist/casino mecca it is did (and one of the most densely populated regions on the planet) in the twenty-first century when foreign investors started filling out the skyline.
10. If you head to the eastern end of Long Island in New York State, you'll end up at which of these destinations?

Answer: The Hamptons

Long Island is a pretty significant part of New York state if not because of its size then because of its location; most people tend not to think about it as part of New York City, but it contains not only the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, but Coney Island, Long Beach, and both JFK and LaGuardia Airports.

Heading east out of the city, however, you'll head out to the upscale communities of Suffolk County including, at the far east of Long Island, The Hamptons (which includes the towns of Southampton, Easthampton, Bridgehampton, and Montauk). Typically known for summer homes, it's long been considered a retreat for wealthy cottage owners.
