Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The colourful buildings found here are accessible by funicular, but to visit them you'd need to travel to which of these locations?

Answer: Valparaíso, Chile

Valparaíso is the second-largest city in Chile besides Santiago and, outside of Chile, relatively unknown. That said, it shouldn't be. Valparaíso is a Chilean culture hub and and important seaport. The historic quarter of the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, partly because its ascensor funicular system, created in the late 19th century, has been transporting citizens up and down its San Francisco-esque hills, covered in brightly-coloured, seaside houses, consistently for more than one hundred years.
2. It's off to Llanquihue Lake in the region of Los Lagos. What is the name of this active volcano in the Andes range?

Answer: Osorno

Osorno, rising two and a half kilometres above sea level, is still quite the active volcano, having erupted numerous times in the past several hundred years. Charles Darwin, riding by on the Beagle in the 1830s, actually saw its eruption from the ocean. Osorno is one of many volcanoes in the region (and the Andes as a whole) because it sits on the Ring of Fire, and its effects on the environment around it are part of what makes the Los Lagos region particularly notable for tourists. Between the local rainforests, snow-capped hills, black-sand beaches, and rapid-loaded rivers, it's an adventurer's haven. Avachinsky is in Russia, Pinatubo is in the Philippines, and Cotopaxi is in Ecuador, much further north in the Andes than Osorno.
3. San Carlos de Bariloche is found on the shores of what glacial lake which stretches into Argentina's Rio Negro Province?

Answer: Lago Nahuel Huapi

Lago Nahuel Huapi was formed entirely by glacial ices which formed over the Patagonian region during the last ice age. Sitting in the south-center of the South American Continent, Lago Nahuel Huapi straddles two provinces of Argentina, only slightly missing Chile's border.

The west half of the lake pushes into the Patagonian Andes while the southern tip heads out to the plateaus and Argentinean wine country. Bariloche, one of Argentina's most idyllic western destinations, is found smack-dab in the center of Nahuel Huapi National Park on the shores of the lake.
4. Jungfernstieg is a main promenade in what European city?

Answer: Hamburg, Germany

The second-largest German city after Berlin, Hamburg is found in the North of Germany and is known for being a fairly prosperous place, especially considering its tumultuous history of political disputes, disease outbreaks, and World Wars. Despite a great deal of urban expansion after its rebuilding in the 1950s, Hamburg is home to numerous cultural landmarks from churches to theatres to opera houses. And while Hamburg may be a major city for business and government work, Hamburg is not a sky-high city; most of its buildings are low-rise or, otherwise, religious venues.
5. Reims, Épernay, and Troyes are all cities in which French province known for its wine?

Answer: Champagne

The Champagne region, east of Paris, is known specifically for its winemaking which, of course, leads to one of its most distinct industries. The rolling hills found in this area are specifically suitable for the growing of champagne grapes which, to wine purists, should only be grown in those specific fields.

The cities found in Champagne are also noteworthy in their own rights because of their long histories dating as far back as the expansion of the Roman Empire. Reims, for instance, was a major location in the story of Joan of Arc; Troyes was also the birthplace of Pope Urban IV.
6. You wouldn't be able to fly to the island of La Digue. Instead you'd need to take a boat, likely from Mahé, which is another island in what French-speaking, Indian Ocean archipelago?

Answer: The Seychelles

The least-populated of all African nations, The Seychelles are little bits of paradise spread across more than one hundred islands in the Indian Ocean, well off the Kenyan coast on the east of Africa. Mahé is the largest island and home to Victoria, the nation's capital city, and regardless of where you decide to go when you visit, you're likely to fly into it and ferry out to the other locations since they're all spread out.

Many of the islands are sparsely-inhabited while others are home to luxury resorts. Oddly, the nation has had a bit of a modern piracy problem. Because of its location off the African coast, it's been a prime destination for Somali pirates, affecting a modest amount of shipping.
7. It's off to Penang! This building is the Snake Temple, home to countless vipers. Worshippers are likely to be found in what Southeast Asian nation, also home to this unique shrine?

Answer: Malaysia

The aptly-named Penang Snake Temple is found in the small state of Penang in mainland Malaysia. Outside the state capital of Georgetown in a small town known as Bayan Lepas, Snake Temple is one of those unique religious sites that acts as a home to numerous animals-- in this case, it's vipers. Visitors are encouraged nonetheless; the vipers have had their venom removed to ensure that unwary tourists don't accidentally provoke the serpents.

While Penang Island was founded by the British, locations like the Snake Temple make it clear that Chinese and Malay culture have blended to make a unique destination.
8. This image depicts a landmark from London, England.

Answer: False

Nope-- that's the Singapore Flyer, one of the many unique landmarks on the Singporean skyline. You can tell by the distinctive cabins on the observation wheel; they're much rounder on the London Eye.
The Singapore Flyer, built on the edge of Marina Bay, finished construction in 2008 and was, temporarily, the tallest observation wheel in the world (being surpassed by Las Vegas' High Roller). Other nearby landmarks? The Helix Bridge, Marina Bay Sands, and The Float.
9. Almost as though it were Venice, but in China, Zhujiajiao sits atop rivers as part of what major Chinese city?

Answer: Shanghai

Zhujiajiao is only a small town, but there's definitely a unique charm to it. All of the buildings in Zhujiajiao are built on narrow riverbanks, forcing many of its citizens to navigate their streets by boats or thin bridges. The town is an ancient one dating back to the third century AD; interestingly, it's younger than Venice.
The town is part of Shanghai's Qingpu District, west of the city proper, if you head towards Dianshan Lake. Beyond that are Jiangsu and Zhejiang, both of which are provinces on the East China Sea with rich histories and expansive agricultural sectors.
10. If you're looking at this view of Coit Tower, you're likely overlooking a bay connected to what ocean?

Answer: Pacific Ocean

Found at the top of Telegraph Hill, Coit Tower overlooks all of San Francisco and the bulk of the San Francisco Bay which opens into the Pacific nearby. From Coit Tower you'd also get a good view of Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, and adjacent Chinatown.
While Telegraph Hill reaches nearly three hundred feet above the water, Coit Tower adds another two hundred ten feet skyward, giving it a perfect hilltop view, no matter how foggy the city ends up being.
