Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Perhaps the most famous of the UK's national parks is the Lake District in Cumbria. Which lake, located just south of the town of Keswick, can be seen in the photo?

Answer: Derwentwater

Unsurprising given the name, there are plenty of lakes in the Lake District. Derwentwater is one of the larger lakes, the third largest after Windermere and Ullswater. The Lake District is also home to the highest mountains in England, with the highest peak, Scafell Pike, part of the Three Peaks challenge.
2. A common feature in Dartmoor National Park in Devon, what three-letter term is used to describe a rocky outcrop such as that shown?

Answer: tor

The word 'tor' can be used to refer to either a hill with an exposed rocky peak, or to exposed rock itself. The tor in the picture is called Haytor, found at the east edge of the national park. Other notable tors in Dartmoor include Bellever Tor, Hound Tor and Greator Rocks. Dartmoor is the setting for the classic Sherlock Holmes story 'The Hound of the Baskervilles'.
3. All of the following are coastal areas in Wales, but which gives its name to a national park?

Answer: Pembrokeshire

The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is found (unsurprisingly) along the coast of the region of Southwest Wales known as Pembrokeshire. The park is home to the Pembrokshire Coast Path, a National Trail with a lot of ups and downs.
4. In which national park can you see several thousand of the namesake ponies roaming around?

Answer: New Forest

The New Forest National Park is located in the southern counties of Hampshire and Wiltshire, and is one of the later additions to the UK's national parks, having been designated in 2005. The ponies that live in the New Forest come in a wide variety of colours, including bay, chestnut and piebald, in addition to the buckskin shown in the photo.
5. The second highest mountain in the Yorkshire Dales, which of the Yorkshire Three Peaks is shown in this wintry scene?

Answer: Ingleborough

The Yorkshire Three Peaks consist of three mountains in the Yorkshire Dales - Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen-y-Ghent. Whilst Whernside and Ingleborough are the first and second highest mountains in the national park, Pen-y-Ghent is only the eighth highest.

The Yorkshire Three Peaks is often considered a good dry run for the actual Three Peaks challenge as the mountains are smaller and much closer together.
6. The photo shows a view of Balloch Castle across Loch Lomond. With which region is Loch Lomond paired in the name of a Scottish national park?

Answer: Trossachs

Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park was the first national park established in Scotland, and was inaugurated in 2002. The only other Scottish national park is the Cairngorms, a range of mountains in the northeast of the country close to Aberdeen.

The Grampians are a mountain range in Scotland, but are not a national park. However, there is a Grampians National Park located in Victoria in Australia.
7. The range of hills that contains Pen-y-Fan, from which this photo was taken, shares its name with which Welsh market town?

Answer: Brecon

The Brecon Beacons National Park extends beyond the area covered by the beacons themselves, and includes Fforest Fawr, the Black Mountain in the west and the Black Mountains (how confusing!) in the east. In fact, the breadth of the national park covers almost the entire width of Wales, from Llandeilo in the west to Abergavennyin the east. Pen-y-Fan is the highest peak in the beacons, and the highest mountain in South Wales.
8. The network of waterways known as The Broads can be found in which two English counties?

Answer: Norfolk and Suffolk

The national park known as The Broads actually includes both the Norfolk Broads and the Suffolk Broads. However, as the majority of the park is in Norfolk, the term 'Norfolk Broads' is often erroneously used to describe the entire park. As the region is extremely flat, the majority of the broads are navigable by boat, and it is a common destination for boating holidays.
9. Home to the highest mountain in Wales, in which national park can you ride this popular train?

Answer: Snowdonia

Taking its name from the highest mountain in Wales (Snowdon), Snowdonia extends across a large portion of the north of the country. It is the third largest national park in the United Kingdom, only slightly smaller than both the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales.

The train pictured is the Snowdon Mountain Railway, travelling the five miles from the village of Llanberis to the summit of Snowdon.
10. Surely the quintessential national park scene - sheep, dry-stone wall AND a hill to boot! Which plateau, home to the highest point in the Peak District, can be seen in the background?

Answer: Kinder Scout

The Peak District was the first national park in the United Kingdom, and was designated in 1951. It is divided into two regions; Dark Peak, in which a lot of moorland and gritstone can be found; and White Peak, comprised predominantly of limestone. Kinder Scout is very much in Dark Peak, and makes for a challenging moorland trudge when there has been recent rain.
