Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I booked my trip to Sydney, Australia, but instead of seeing the Opera House, I've landed in Canada. In what province is Sydney?

Answer: Nova Scotia

Sydney is found on the east side of Cape Breton Island. It was home to a major steel mill in the early 20th century, and a major staging area during the war for Europe-bound fleets. Sydney is also the mainland terminal for the ferry to the Newfoundland for the Trans-Canada Highway.

In 2002, a British couple mistakenly booked their Sydney honeymoon in Nova Scotia rather than Australia. Airport staff say infrequently they do receive luggage destined for Australia, but rarely people.
2. I'm lost in a city that is either the first capital of ancient Egypt or the location of the famous homes of the Blues, Beale Street, in the United States. Where am I lost?

Answer: Memphis

When Narmer united the early kingdoms of Upper and Lower Egypt in about 3100 B.C., he made Memphis his capital because that is where the two kingdoms met. He thought it was symbolic of the unification of his country. Over time, as the population shifted south along the Nile, the capital was moved to Thebes. Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee, a major tourist attraction, is approximately 1.8 miles long, and runs from the Mississippi River to East Street. Visitors will find attractions such as the Memphis Rock N Soul Museum and Hard Rock Cafe there.
3. I'm lost in Lagos! I don't know if it is Portugal or Nigeria? Oh, I see water? Which of them is on the seaside?

Answer: Both of them

You can find Lagos in the Algarve of Portugal, on the south coast on the Atlantic Ocean. During the Age of Discovery, Lagos' position made it the hub of European slavery and the home of Henry the Navigator. In Nigeria, Lagos is the main port city, and ranked the fastest growing city in Africa.

The city is also home to the business side of Nigeria, with many banks and other institutions based there.
4. I'm confused. Am I at the site of the ancient Parthenon or the home of the University of Georgia Bulldogs? Anyway, the city is named this.

Answer: Athens

The ancient Parthenon, or temple of Athena Parthenos, the virgin goddess, was designed in part by the Greek sculptor Phidias. The henotheistic Athenians worshiped Athena as their most important deity; they believed they were the wisest of Greeks due to that connection.

The University of Georgia was chartered in 1785, and is the United States' first state-chartered university. It is commonly called UGA, which is also the nickname of their official live mascot, the bulldog.
5. Now I'm lost in Perth! Perth can be found in central Scotland and Western Australia. What are the nicknames of these two cities, respectively?

Answer: The Fair City & The Light City

In central Scotland, Perth can be found on the River Tay, with an estimated 2011 population of 50,000. The town was known in the medieval period as "St John's Toun" or "Saint Johnstoun", after the church in the area named after John the Baptist. It's known as "The Fair City" after Sir Walter Scott's 1828 story "Fair Maid of Perth".

On the west coast of Australia, Perth is the capital of the state of Western Australia. Named after the town in Scotland by Sir George Murray, the city's population exploded during the gold rush of the late 1800s. It is known as the "City of Light", after residents lit up the city as John Glenn traveled overhead in 1962, while orbiting the earth.
6. The city of Waterloo is either the site of Napoleon's final defeat, or the twin town to Kitchener. Where is Kitchener's twin located, that I am lost in?

Answer: Ontario, Canada

Napoleon's army was finally defeated at Waterloo, Belgium in 1815. Today the Butte du Lion, or Lion's Mound, dominates the battlefield area. It is said that William II, the Prince of Orange, was wounded here by a musket ball to the shoulder while participating in the battle.

The twin cities of Kitchener-Waterloo are located in Ontario, Canada. Waterloo is home to both the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University, along with the home of technology giant BlackBerry (formerly Research In Motion or RIM).
7. I am either in the geographical center of Argentina attending the National University or visiting the Mosque-Cathedral in Spain. What city am I visiting?

Answer: Cordoba

The city of Cordoba, Argentina, was founded in 1573 by Jerónimo Luis de Cabrera, who named it after Cordoba, Spain. The National University of Cordoba is the oldest in Argentina, and second oldest in Latin America. Although the building was originally intended for use as a Christian church, the Mosque-Cathedral in Cordoba, Spain, was taken over by Muslims in 784 and completed as a mosque.

It was converted back to a Christian church during the Reconquista in the 1200s, and is still controlled by the Catholic Church today.
8. I am lost in yet another city! The guidebook says I'm in Costa Rica, but I'm looking at Silicon Valley! What is the shared city name?

Answer: San Jose

In California, San Jose was the first capital of California once it entered the union in 1850, but did not greatly expand until after the Second World War, the last area of the Bay Area to expand. It is known as the "Capital of Silicon Valley". The two San Jose cities are in a sister city twin relationship.

In Costa Rica, San Jose is the the capital and largest city in the country. It is named in honour of Joseph of Nazareth. The city can be found in the central plateau, but few live in the downtown core. The city is also listed as one of the safest and least violent in Central America.

Today it is located at the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal and is the economic and financial center of the country. Panama City, Florida, is a very popular tourist location, located on the panhandle on St. Andrew's Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Don't forget to visit the Miracle Strip while you are there!
10. In this city I can either watch the Orangemen in New York or I can tour the city where the famous Archimedes was born. Where am I?

Answer: Syracuse

Syracuse, New York, is home to Syracuse University, which is a private research university affiliated with the United Methodist Church. While touring the city, don't forget to visit the Erie Canal Museum, which chronicles the building of the canal across New York State, and the Erie Canal Village, which is a living history museum.

The Syracuse of Archimedes is located on the island of Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea. Founded by the ancient Greeks, and nearly three thousand years old, the entire city was listed as a World Heritage site in 2005.
