Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On which sea does Tyrone have a coastline?

Answer: Tyrone does not have a seacoast.

Tyrone does abut a large body of water; Lough Neagh, the largest freshwater lake in the United Kingdom. Lough Neagh has an area of about 153 square miles
2. What is the county town of Tyrone?

Answer: Omagh

Omagh is also the largest town by population, an estimated 22,000 live there (local government figure, 2006). In contemporary Ulster, the counties do not have the same administrative importance they once had. In the early 1970s, the former Tyrone County Council was disbanded (along with many others in Northern Ireland).

In its place the county gained four smaller 'district' councils', one in each of the towns mentioned in the question. The term 'county town' is, therefore, now more of a symbolic one.
3. Which mountain range is in Tyrone?

Answer: Sperrins

The Sperrin Mountain range is about 20 miles long, The highest peak is Sawel (2,168 feet).
Gold deposits have been found in these mountains, but are not yet exploitable. The owners estimate the reserves extend to one million ounces. A working gold mine operates outside Omagh, which is about 10 miles away.
4. Which bodily part is the heraldic emblem of Co Tyrone?

Answer: Red hand

It is also the insignia for the Province of Ulster. The origins are steeped in myth. It was the heraldic symbol of the O'Neil clan, which had a power base in Tyrone and was one of the most prominent in the Province. Legend has it that in a horse race to determine who should be crowned King of Ulster, one of the two contenders, Ui Neil, was losing, so cut off his right hand and flung it across the winning line before his rival could reach it.
5. John Dunlap, printer of the American Declaration of Independence, was born just outside this Co Tyrone town.

Answer: Strabane

John Dunlap was born in 1747 and died in 1812. Legend has it he served his apprenticeship in the town. If so, he must have been a very young apprentice, for records show he moved to Philadelphia in 1757 - where he did serve a printing apprenticeship.

In 1771, Dunlap founded the 'Pennsylvania Packet', which is credited as being the first newspaper in the USA. Gray's Printworks in Strabane is a museum dedicated to printing techniques of the 18th Century.

In 1733, work began on a canal to link Coalisland to the River Blackwater and into Lough Neagh, from where it was linked by canal to Newry and the open sea. The canal was abandoned in 1954 and the last coalmine closed in 1971.
