Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these is NOT one of the nine glens of Antrim?

Answer: Glenveagh

The nine glens of Antrim are: Glenaan, Glenariffe,Glenarm, Glenballyeamon, Glencloy, Glencorp, Glendun, Glenshesk and Glentaisie.
Glenveagh is a forest park in Co. Donegal.
2. The Giant's Causeway, on the north coast Of Co. Antrim is well-known. How was it formed?

Answer: By volcanic action

The Giant's Causeway was formed as the result of three lava flows. Approximately 40,000 hexagonal columns were formed when molten lava met the sea water. There are several interesting formations such as the 'Giant's Chair', 'Giant's Organ' and the 'Wishing Chair'.
It is a popular tourist destination.
3. Near Ballycastle is a lake called Loughareema. For what is it famous?

Answer: It is a 'Vanishing Lake'.

Loughareema translates as 'The Vanishing Lake'.
This lake is on chalk over peat as a result of which the lake fills up during wet weather when streams come down the mountain into it. During dry weather the water seeps down through the chalk and only the dry bed of the lake is visible.
4. What unpleasant historical event occurred at Dunluce Castle?

Answer: Part of the castle fell into the sea.

Dunluce Castle is situated very close to the cliff edge on the north coast of Co. Antrim. During the 1500s it was occupied by Sorley Boy MacDonnell, a Scottish chieftain.
In 1639 part of the castle, including the kitchen, fell into the sea. Seven cooks were in it at the time and were drowned.
5. Which serial killer was a native of Co. Antrim?

Answer: John Bodkin Adams

John Bodkin Adams was born in Randalstown on 21 January 1899. He graduated from Queen's University Belfast as a doctor and moved to Eastbourne in England to practice.
He is reputed to have killed many of his patients but only stood trial for one of them. However he was acquitted due to insufficient evidence. He died in 1983.
J G Haigh was the 'Acid Bath Murderer' and killed about 6 people in London in the 1940s. Fred West and his wife Rosemary killed at least 12 women and girls in Gloucestershire in the 1970s and Peter Sutcliffe was the 'Yorkshire Ripper' who killed 13 women in the 1980s.
6. What stretch of water separates the east coast of Co. Antrim from Scotland?

Answer: The North Channel

The North Channel, formerly known as the Irish Channel, flows between N. Ireland and Scotland. It is crossed by many ferry services and was the site of a disaster in 1950 when the 'Princess Victoria' sank in severe storms with great loss of life.
The Atlantic Ocean washes the north coast, the Irish Sea is between Ireland and England and the English Channel is between England and France.
7. What is the highest mountain in Co. Antrim?

Answer: Trostan

Trostan is the highest at 1817 ft. followed by Knocklayd (1695), Divis (1574), and Slemish (1457).
The Antrim Hills run from north to south and while the inland slope is quite gradual the coastal side is almost a sheer drop to the sea. Between the hills and the sea runs the Antrim Coast Road with spectacular views.
8. Which Spanish Armada ship sank off the north Antrim coast in 1588?

Answer: La Girona

'La Girona' sank en route to Scotland and of over 1300 people on board only nine survived. Several attempts were made to salvage the ship as it was reputed to be carrying treasure and in 1967 - 1968 it was eventually found. The timbers were rotted but a large hoard of gold was recovered and is presently on view in the Ulster Museum, Belfast.
'Mary Rose' sank in the Solent in 1545, 'Hood' was sunk in battle with the German 'Bismarck' and 'Vasa' was a Swedish ship which sank on its maiden voyage near Stockholm in 1628.
9. What is the geological formation of the Antrim Plateau?

Answer: Lava over chalk

Long ago this was a volcanic region and as the lava erupted it spread over the land. When it reached the sea it cooled to form basalt.
10. What is Carrick-a-Rede?

Answer: A rope bridge

Carrick-a-Rede is a rope bridge which connects the mainland with the small Carrick Island. Originally, over 300 years ago it was for the benefit of salmon fishermen and consisted of single planks of wood with a rope handrail. Salmon fishing is no longer practised and a new modern bridge has been installed and is a tourist attraction.
You need a good head for heights to cross it (I haven't done it!) and it has been known for people to get to the island and then panic and have to be rescued by boat. If you cross it both ways you get a certificate.
Because of weather conditions it is only open between March and October and even then is closed during storms. Well worth a visit.
