The original title of this political satire when it was first published anonymously in 1725 was the less snappy "Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World, in Four Parts. The Anglican Archbishop is head of the Church of Ireland which, in 1534, followed Henry VIII's lead in splitting from the Roman Catholic church. The majority of the population continued to follow Catholicism, so the city has two Archbishops, both of which call themselves Primate of All Ireland.

The second highest position in both denominations is Primate of Ireland, held by the bishops of Dublin.

Irish road bowling involves throwing a 28 ounce iron ball along a country course with the fewest shots winning, and takes place mostly in County Armagh and County Cork. Hurling is a fast Irish stick and ball game with carnogie being its women's equivalent.

The dominant sport in Armagh is Gaelic Football, a 15-a-side game played with a round ball that is smaller but heavier than a football. In 2002, Armagh won the All-Ireland Championship.

Lord Castlereagh, born Robert Stewart, pushed through the 1800 Act of Union that joined Britain and Ireland to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. St Patrick is said to have made Armagh his see which is why the city's Anglican and Roman Catholic Cathedrals are both called St Patrick's. Thus it is the world's only city with two cathedrals that have the same name. The Roman Catholic cathedral is also unusual in that the top and bottom halves are built in different architectural styles.
