6. What industry was Londonderry City known for?

Answer: Shirt-making

Londonderry was the centre of the shirt-making industry. In 1902, there were 38 shirt-making factories in Londonderry. They were mainly staffed by women as stitching was regarded as 'women's work'. Many women were also employed as 'outworkers', working from their own homes. There is still some shirt-making in the city, but nothing like in the past.
7. Londonderry is a walled city. What is unusual about the walls?

Answer: They are intact.

The Walls, usually known as 'Derry's Walls', were built between 1613 and 1618. Despite the siege of Derry in 1689 and various assaults since, they have never been breached.

There are many cannons situated on the walls including 'Roaring Meg', so called because of the really loud noise when she was fired. She was used in the Siege of Derry but has since been restored.
8. What metal has been found in the Sperrin Mountains?

Answer: Gold

Some gold was discovered in the Sperrins around 1980 and mining has been carried out since 2007. There is not enough to make it a commercial proposition but tourists can pan for gold in the rivers (must try it sometime!).

It is believed that some ancient gold jewellery was made from Sperrins gold.
9. The names of several of the mountains in the Sperrins region start with the word 'Mullagh'. This is an Irish Gaelic word. What does it mean?

Answer: Hill or mound

This is from the Irish word 'Mullach', meaning a hill or mound. Some examples are Mullaghdoo, Mullaghclogher and Mullaghhash.
