Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Belfast is the largest city in Northern Ireland. On what river is it situated?

Answer: River Lagan

The River Lagan divides the counties of Antrim and Down at several points, flowing from Slieve Croob in the Dromara Hills through Dromore, Lisburn and finally Belfast where it flows into Belfast Lough.
2. In 1912, the Titanic sailed on her maiden voyage from Southampton, after being built at Harland and Wolff Shipyard in Belfast. Two cranes from this shipyard dominate the Belfast skyline; what are their names?

Answer: Samson & Goliath

The Titanic sailed from Belfast to Southampton, carrying only crew and technical staff. The ship collected its first passengers at Southampton, later voyaging to Cherbourg, Queenstown, but never arriving in New York.

City Hall is the headquarters of Belfast City Council; Belfast Castle is a tourist attraction overlooking the city and Hillsborough is the residence of the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland and the official residence for the Queen when she visits the province.
4. Two towns were awarded city status in Northern Ireland to mark the Queen's Golden Jubilee in 2002. What towns were they?

Answer: Lisburn & Newry

Even though only one of the contenders was supposed to receive city status, two did in Northern Ireland - this did not happen in England, Wales or Scotland.
5. The Giant's Causeway is a famous landmark of Northern Ireland. Which igneous rock formed it?

Answer: Basalt

When a fissure eruption occurred on the Antrim Plateau, hot lava ran down towards the sea. When it reached the sea, it cooled rapidly to form regular-shaper columns, each being between five and eight sided.
6. Near the Giant's Causeway is a town on the River Bush. This town contains what is claimed to be the world's oldest whiskey distillery. What is it?

Answer: Bushmills

The Bushmills distillery (and Irish whiskey generally) claims to produce the world's finest whiskey - it is distilled three times; Scottish is distilled twice and American only once.
7. Northern Ireland contains six counties. Which is the only county not to touch Lough Neagh?

Answer: Fermanagh

Lough Neagh is the largest freshwater lake (by surface area) in the British Isles and lies slightly to the East of Northern Ireland. Fermanagh contains two large lakes (loughs) of its own - Upper and Lower Lough Erne.
8. What is the highest peak of Northern Ireland?

Answer: Slieve Donard

Slieve Donard is a famous mountain within the Mourne range in County Down. It stands at 849 metres, and beside it lies the tourist town of Newcastle.
9. What is the name given to a former prison in Northern Ireland, the proposed site for a national stadium, museum and agricultural showgrounds?

Answer: Maze

10. Finally, in which city would I stand on the Craigavon Bridge on the River Foyle, walk along the historic walls and visit Guildhall?

Answer: Londonderry

Londonderry (or Derry) was named after the UK capital when the guilds from London occupied it. The city is famous for the Siege of Derry before the Battle of the Boyne.
