Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. With which of these counties does County Fermanagh NOT share a border?

Answer: County Armagh

County Fermanagh does not share a border with County Armagh. It shares a border with County Tyrone in Northern Ireland and with Counties Monaghan, Cavan, Donegal and Leitrim in the Republic of Ireland. It is the only county in Northern Ireland which does not border on Lough Neagh.
2. County Fermanagh has a well-known tourist attraction in the Marble Arch Caves. Of what rock are they composed?

Answer: Limestone

The Marble Arch Caves are composed of limestone. They are part of a large cave system and were opened to the public in 1985. It is possible to tour them by boat or on foot.
3. County Fermanagh is sometimes referred to as 'N. Ireland's Lake District'. What are the two main lakes called?

Answer: Upper and Lower Lough Erne

The two lakes are Upper and Lower Lough Erne. The River Erne rises in the Republic of Ireland, widens out to form Upper Lough Erne, narrows for a stretch through Enniskillen, then broadens out again to form Lower Lough Erne, before flowing into the Atlantic Ocean. The lakes are a tourist attraction with spectacular scenery, water sports and fishing.
4. What is the county town of County Fermanagh?

Answer: Enniskillen

Enniskillen is situated on the River Erne at the point where it narrows between the two loughs. It was a garrison town and saw the foundation of two regiments - the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, an infantry regiment formed in 1881, and the Inniskillings (6th Dragoons), a cavalry regiment formed in 1689. Notice the ancient spelling.

Both Oscar Wilde and Samuel Beckett were born in Enniskillen and educated at Portora Royal School.
5. The Lakes contain a number of islands. Which is NOT one of them?

Answer: Ram's Island

Ram's Island is in Lough Neagh and the others are in Lower Lough Erne. Boa island is the largest island and has some ancient carved statues. It is not called after the snake but after Badh, a Celtic goddess. A road runs right through it with a bridge at either side.
6. What is the highest mountain in County Fermanagh?

Answer: Cuilcagh

Cuilcagh is the highest mountain at 665m (2182 ft). It has been developed as a mountain park with hill-walking. It has a large area of 'blanket bog' with many rare species. Belmore is 398m (1306 ft), while Benaughlin is 373m (1224 ft). Mullaghmore is in County Tyrone.
7. One of the islands in Lower Lough Erne is the site of a landmark round tower. Which is it?

Answer: Devenish

Devenish Island is the site of a twelfth century round tower. The tower is 100ft tall and can be climbed by internal ladders. The view is spectacular! The island is an ancient monastic site with the ruins of the sixth century Oratory of Saint Molaise.
8. Near Castle Caldwell Forest is a five-foot high, fiddle-shaped monument to Denis McCabe. Who was he?

Answer: A fiddler

Denis McCabe was an 18th century fiddler who set out on the Lough on a barge to entertain people with his music. Unfortunately he imbibed too freely, fell overboard and was drowned. Part of the inscription on the monument reads as follows:

'On firm land only exercise your skill
There you may play and drink your fill'.
9. Near Lower Lough Erne is the town of Garrison, situated on Lough Melvin. What is Lough Melvin noted for?

Answer: Boat-fishing

Lough Melvin is well known as a fishing lake. Fishermen go out on the lake in boats. The commonest fish are salmon, brown trout and char. It is also home to three unique fish, varieties of trout but with genetic differences. These are sonaghan (salmo nigripinnis), gillaroo (salmo stomachius) and ferrox, a fish which eats other trout. The lake has very pure water.
10. Upper Lough Erne is much quieter, with many waterfowl and unusual wild flowers. The lough is dotted with 'crannogs'. What are they?

Answer: Artificial islands

Crannogs are artificial islands built on piles of rocks and logs on the bed of the lough. They were built up, surrounded by walls and used as dwelling places.
They are found in many places in Ireland and Scotland.
