Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In late medieval Europe, what was the term for a payment made from a vassal to his overlord that would excuse the vassal's military service?

Answer: Scutage

The term scutage literally means 'shield money', and was in practice at a rather large scale during the time of William the Conqueror and his successors. This practice helped lead to the development of professional, mercenary armies during this time.

In the Magna Carta there was an attempt to curtail the practice, but it did not fall out of practice until made obsolete by other forms of taxation.
2. What group in Asia has had a massive diaspora, creating substantial sub-populations all over the globe?

Answer: Chinese

The Chinese of the south have been spread all throughout southeast Asia, North and South America and Europe, for mostly economic reasons. Most of the Chinese who came to America during the 19th century, to work on the railways, were natives of the Cantonese speaking region of Guangdong.
3. Who was the first Indian ever to sit in the British House of Commons?

Answer: Naoroji

Dadbhai Naoroji was a House of Commons member in the late 19th century. This was around the time when Indian nationalism was just starting to develop, but major figures like Gandhi and Nehru had not yet come of age.
4. What was the main cargo of the Spanish galleon trade route, as it wended its way back to southern China, via the Philippines, from Mexico?

Answer: Silver

The Chinese got rich of the Spanish Galleon trade route, that is, until the arrival of the opium trade. Once the opium started flowing in, around the late 18th century, the silver began to flow back out.
5. Who was the founder of the ancient empire of Mali?

Answer: Sundiata

The name Mali meant 'place of the king'. The kingdom of Mali developed during the 13th century around the spot where the modern country of Mali now exists. These were a Mande speaking people (i.e. Mandinka). Mansa Musa was probably the greatest emperor of this ancient kingdom, though his lavish behavior depleted the empire's coffers and helped lead to its downfall.
